Amazing footage. Thank-you for sharing...there is something about 'being present in the moment' that you can really see in Mary Weiss and her performance. If you can find the clip of her singing leader of the pack with Robert Goulet doing a cameo on a motorcycle you will see it. She seems to live the song and makes you believe it.

This was the root of my music, just listening to it again sends my soul soaring! Being from Ozone Park, I was there to hear them before they hit the big time, and my cousin was involved with the same music scene. His name was Ricky Racano, of Ricky and the Vacels. I will never forget how Mary made me swoon, listening as a young boy on my way to Rockaway Beach with my older sisters. There is a genre of music to which we all belonged, Northeast Tin Pan Alley blues/rocknroll and it re defined pop forever. I still adore this music, which is 1,000 times more important now in the digital world of pitch transposers and such. And Billy Joel played session for them as an unknown? Too much! Check out my music too-

Lana del Rey is trying for Mary Weiss's look, but Mary Weiss has the wounded look of a young Julie Christie. Mary bloomed twenty years too early. The Shangrilas were huge, okay, but MTV would have made Mary a solo superstar. I was a Shangrila fan yet today is the first time I ever saw a picture of Mary Weiss. You barely knew what singers looked like in sixty four, apart from a head shot on an album cover. I am amazed.

With all due respect to the late Jerry Leiber, one of my favorite lyricists of all time, this was no more "corny" than the hipster jive he wrote for The Coasters. As for Greg Shaw calling this "fake", there was NOTHING fake about this wonderful music. If you want fake images go listen to heavy metal. A very disrespectful and possibly sexist comment. I think Shadow Morton and Mary Weiss were close to musical geniuses and the Ganser twins were by far the most interesting background singers of any vocal group I can think of. And yeah they're cute as hell too.
@100chuckjones9 жыл бұрын
+Rob Dobbins Nothing fake about Heavy Metal. I love Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, even some of the 80's metal was great..but as a musician and a guy who loves to listen to and study music, The Shangri-Las were brilliant. the vocals, the music, it was a symphony. great music.
@MichaelHattem8 жыл бұрын
+Rob Dobbins I didn't read it that way. I think Shaw was trying to say something about the combination of the rough image combined with the naive or innocent teenage worldview of the early 1960s. I don't think he meant any disrespect; he just chose a less-than-ideal word to describe what he meant.
@faithfulchica18617 жыл бұрын
Rob Dobbins thank you for this great comment!

He also described them as 'tough sluts' and said they 'went out with leader of the pack type guys'. The stories they told in the songs may not have been entirely true to their life stories but that doesn't make any of them less of an artist. That rock critic has no fucking idea what he's talking about. He doesn't have a clue what actually went on in their lives, he's just spewing random ideas and it's obvious that he doesn't take them seriously.
@DzaVideo6 жыл бұрын
This bashing of Greg Shaw has to stop. He wasn't implying the girls were sluts, he was merely reiterating what Mary states immediately afterwards - People try to put you in boxes, and The Shangri-Las' "image" was, incorrectly, that of "tough" girls. Even Greg says it wasn't true! But people just hear "Well, they were the tough sluts" then get triggered and don't even listen to anything else he says.

Mary Weiss --incredible female rock singer. "Leader of the Pack" -- right up there with "Heartbreak Hotel" as a track that shook people up when released. Some say I'm crazy - if it's not true, why did many try to emulate & parody it. This group performed along side The Beatles & toured in '64 with The Stones. Heyday was 5 years & when the British Invasion was in full swing. Yet, they survived. No mean feat. Listen to their tunes today. Few sound dated. Angst that even Lou Reed could appreciate.
