I’ve said this for few people and this is long But I’ve had this plan for awhile but I’m no one so can’t do much yet. So I’ve been wanting to do a shark tournament for a while Most the sharks that we have here in fl are over populated and we are allowed to harvest The week before I wanted to go get a shark you can make video and show people how to process, prepare, keep and cook it. For the tournaments Captain meeting I wanted to make shark 3-4 ways cooked at the end of the show tell them what they ate and how the meat can be used. Tournament can easily take a sharks that don’t migrate and don’t leave wrecks. Tournament has cash prizes for biggest bull shark or lemon the ones that are issues Unfortunately can’t touch a sandbar but lemon and bulls sharks are free game At the tournament we can cook shark for free for all the guest and educate everyone on how good they are Fillet the sharks that are caught to give out to guest and those who attend. I think we can get sponsors behind this local captains and company’s that way it can be an annual or bi annual thing. I love to cook and be willing to do all the cooking and prep for all these things I have a group of guys who are dying to do it just need more people If we can get 10 people to back this plan it promote it and work towards this . We can make something big and if it works then it’s beneficial for everyone. I’ve talked to Miami sheriff about it before they have a big homeless shelter from homestead to above you guys and there’s plenty of places to donate meat and even can do giant cook outs for first responders If all is put on yt / social media the possible and positive impact could be huge I know it’s long but it’s a good plan I’ve been trying to do for a long time but just lmk what you guys think Bull shark and lemons are both legal to take here in Florida we can take out a few of the ones that are an issue with this easily

That won’t make a dent. The shark dive boats need to stop chuming the waters. And have 12 shark tournaments a year and one extra one during spawning season. The government needs to pay commercial shark fisherman to catch and kill sharks. He’s 100 percent right, they totally follow our boats 100 percent

FWC is 25 years behind on virtually everything. It is as bad or worse in the Gulf. In my area, for every big grouper or snapper you get to the boat, sharks or jewfish get 4 or 5. The resource is being devastated while sharks and jews are protected. It's obvious FWC and NOAA won't do anything so it's up to each of us to save the resource.

I love to hear this from a commercial fisherman. My dad ran a charter business out of Stuart and Cudjoe key for years. I am a huge conservationists and always put the ocean first. I am happy to hear someone make the connection between what the sharks eat and how that impacts the fishery. It is a huge problem. Research also suggest that the sharks have learned to follow boats when the leave the dock knowing it leads to an easy meal. People are always so quick to jump on commercial fisherman for the amount of fish they harvest. I worked in the retail and wholesale fish business for years and the amount of crap people gave us for selling fish that are responsibly harvested is crazy. People always want to protect the sharks and I agree with that in a certain extent but it is a huge problem in Florida more so then anywhere else I've fished and I have been fortunate enough to fish all over the world. I couldn't agree with you more that there needs to be a harvest season on sharks, even if its one shark per boat it would do a lot to allow the fishery to recover. I know there has been success with reduction of invasive species to get local restaurants to feature them on menus to introduce people to the idea of eating these animals. Maybe you and Victor can work with some of your local restaurants to put out recipes for cooking them. If you get a known chef to endorse it you can get a lot of traction. Keep doing what your doing. Love watching your content. I hope your charter business continues to grow as it is a better way to earn a living. I will certainly look to book with you on my next trip to Florida. Keep preaching people truly don't understand what you go through.

old timer from Jupiter here to confirm that there was not a shark problem in the 80's and 90's in south Florida. I've done a few hundred dives out of Jupiter and Palm Beach inlets and the only sharks you saw were nurse sharks hiding under the ledges. Fishing out of Jupiter, we never had fish taken by sharks, only cudas on occasion. I remember my dad taking me to Bryant Park boat ramp as a kid in lake Worth when they used to have shark fishing tournaments. The fisherman would bring in the sharks and they used a crane to hang and weight them. Maybe bring back these tournaments to get the shark population back in balance. If you want to see evidence of the current situation, go the the dock behind the Square Grouper in Jupiter and watch the guys clean fish. The amount and size of bull sharks you will see is terrifying.

Great video Adam, what started as jokes about fish getting eaten just a few years ago has turned into what we deal with today. The severity of these issues has gotten completely out of control for everyone, recreational fisherman, charter fisherman and commercial fisherman. The people who make their living on the water are struggling from these issues the worst such as commercial/charter fisherman like you loosing hundreds of extra dollars in gear and feeding countless fish to sharks every single time you fish. Charter captains all around the state who already need to work extremely hard to get their clients on fish now have to deal with the fish getting eaten by sharks after all the work has been done to get the bite in the first place. The real problem with this is it forces the issue to be dealt with by the frustrated fisherman who are left absolutely no other choice. In my opinion this isn't a conversation about angry fisherman not understanding that sharks live in the same environment as the fish but more so an imbalance in the ecosystem. Whether the cause is the dive boats who have trained the sharks to wait at the boat to eat or because commercial fisherman have no incentive to kill any sharks, this is causing extremely negative outcomes such as 2-3x as many fish being killed on a daily basis due to a 50-75% rate of fish being eaten by sharks. These issues were not always this way and they are getting noticeably worse by the years. These sharks are extremely overpopulated and are showing extremely unnatural behaviors on a regular basis such as attacking engines and trolling motors. Although the fishermen like you or I are not marine biologists, we have spent years and years on these waters and can easily distinguish when something has become unnatural and I think we can all agree that the amount of sharks and the behaviors of these sharks is completely unnatural.

its the florida regulations... coming from NY and taking my land based shark fishing course that is required the FWC is focusing efforts on shark mortality to make sure even people that are not familiar with sharks and could potentially be killing them are not. it seems like they are trying to get that shark population that high on purpose by setting the regulations the way they are. an open season on the problem sharks would result in results no doubt, but how to not target endangered shark species while still targeting the populous problem ones is probably the issue. are they trying to keep a few from going extinct and making a shark problem? idk this is a complex issue.

In Hawaii the problem got so bad that they banned the shark charters from feeding sharks, almost 10 years ago now. Sharks were starting to associate boats with food, so they would follow the boats back in shore, thus creating a problem for beach goers. After that, shark charters would just go to crabber spots, as sharks tend to gather there due to crabbers dumping by-catch. Win-win for everyone.

I’m so sick of hearing myself complain about it I just applied for the permit and I’m going to start targeting them which is a cake walk bc you can’t go anywhere to get away from them anymore. I know no one here is feeding them so I’m really not sure what the deal is. We had a heavy yellowfin migration about 3 years ago and the sharks showed up towards the end of the season to steal 80% of our catch until the tuna disappeared. The sharks never left and eat everything now getting more and more aggressive especially around my divers.

Hey Adam, I'm still gonna charter you to come fishing. I have to tell you the shark issue is bad up and down the whole coast. We had days in NC and MD where we would hook 30 tunas and only get 5 to the boat. We were allowed to keep 12 to 18 and we're killing 25 to 40. It's ridiculous. I moved here to Sebastián FL last year. The shark problem is even worse here. Let's do a shark tournament and donate all the meat to a local food bank. If we did a tournament and raised money for a charity, and donated all the meat its a start. A 50 boat two day tournament is potentially a 100 dead sharks. If we did that in a few local reefs it would make a difference at least in those spots. Like you said the kingfish are spawing in the same area. A tournament the week before the kingfish season would make a difference. Just a thought until the idiots in DC make a change. Lets go Fishing!

You will find yourself what is small slit that will fit over your fishing line or your fishing line will fit through the slit so the magnet stays on your fishing line. You got a fish on throw the magnet on immediatelywill even see your fish when you both fish take the magnet off. Repeat the process no more shock problem Adam I hope you understand.

Well commercial shark fishing is dying out. I personally am a deck hand for a dude that moved to Alabama doing it with gill net and long line. Born and raised in Salerno until Florida banned gill net so he left. Look up David Stiller. We need commercial shark fishing back into play, that will help. Also unban the sale of shark fins. Shouldn’t have to throw them back into the river when the shark is being harvested anyway. Commercial shark fishing is a job and a half.

Shark tournament is the move, would be so sick watching people weigh a 500 pound bull shark like the white marlin open. 1,000 dollar entry, and maybe like closest to 250 pounds Calcutta, set it up as a winner take all event. all sharks donated to local charity. Too hard to motivate recreational anglers to spend half their day fighting a big shark either way, and since commercial has no way to sell fins in US now…(should change as well, as long as the sale stays domestic and doesn’t get out of hand)

It's just as bad here in NC brother.

We need to open up commercial shark fishing and sell it to foreign countries China... Japan ex... let the fisherman make the money and we could fix the problem relatively fast. It's no different than the blue fin tuna situation up north just a different fish
