The Shattered Fortress - Mike Portnoy (ISOLATED DRUMS)

The Shattered Fortress" is the final part of Portnoy's Twelve-step Suite, reprising and concluding themes and motifs from the suite that began on 2002's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence album.

So much musicality in his drumming ! And a great sound too ! That's why I prefer him over Mangini, which is a technical monster from beyond our universe, but so cold and mechanic. Portnoy's drumming sounds more organic and real to me.

monokhem, Mike Portnoy is not an easy drummer to try to cover. He might be harder because his playing, while not as technical as Mancini, is much more musical.

I think good drumming like this can be like telling a story or an oil painting. I like the story. I have had people say to me that playing drums without accompaniment is not music. This is proof positive how great drumming it is, separately or with a band. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent.

Portnoy is more than just a skilled drumer. He wrote awesome lyrics, produced, he sang and sooo many things. That's why you can't compare them. Musicians aren't only skill or speed. Portnoy totally owns Mangini

+Pekka Kaukalo mangini is fantastic. super fast, consistent, disciplined. Astonishing and self titled are amazing albums... but I can't help but miss portnoys erratic, unpredictable , unique drums. I'm a guitar player so I don't know anything about drumming but I guess what I'm trying to say is.... take a song like honor thy father. portnoy plays the intro in 4 while the band plays in 6. creativity is what mangini is lacking so far. portnoy wrote some of dream theaters best songs, sang Them, played with style. mangini plays portnoys parts perfect but he's as exciting to watch as a robot. I love both of them but overall portnoy is more of an artist, mangini is a performer. performers don't write albums and thats why I miss portnoy. just my opinion
