One of my favorite movies of all time! The Irish line was kind of an inside joke. In the book, Morgan Freeman's character was nicknamed "Red" because he was a red-haired man of Irish descent with the last name Redington. But, they really wanted Morgan Freeman to play the part in the movie. I'm so glad they cast him in this. Shawshank Redemption was the first instance of the infamous Morgan Freeman voice-over narration style that would later define his career.

@brianmatthews1736

It is about BOTH Red and Andy, and Brooks...and to a smaller degree to the entire prison friend group of Red's, and Andy's. Without Andy there is NO redemption...he was the catalyst for the redemption. He taught Red, and others that HOPE is most likely (outside of love of course) the greatest of things. Andy redemeed himself by escaping, planning it all down to having a huge amount of money to restart his life in Mexico...but he redeemed Red as well...cause Red was on his way to giving up, and Andy made him make that promise as a way to pull Red along with him, and get him to understand that HOPE is a good thing, maybe the greatest of things. He helped redeem them both. Brooks unfortunately had already past the point of redemption in some ways, cause he chose to kill himself, rather than find a way to have HOPE.

"I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living, or get busy dying." Fun Fact: Raquel Welch, whose One Million Years B.C. (1966) poster plays a significant role in the film, is a big fan of this movie. Musical Enthusiast Fact: The opera song that Andy Dufresne plays over the loud speakers is "Canzonetta sull'aria" from "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. It was Tim Robbins' idea for Andy to turn up the volume of the record player in the scene. Bird Timing Fact: When Andy goes to the library to begin work as Brooks' assistant and Brooks' crow, Jake, is squawking, Tim Robbins had to time his line so that the crow wouldn't squawk over him, since the bird could not be trained to squawk on cue. Robbins was able to time his line perfectly by learning the bird's squawking patterns, for which writer/director Frank Darabont praised him.

I was 13 when my father grabbed me and my brother and took us to see the, Thursday - 10pm sneak-preview of this the day before it opened... and we had no idea what to expect. At the end of the film when the credits started to roll, I realized that my mouth was WIDE open... from amazement. I recalled how simliar the ending was to JAWS and I was in awe. I then turned to look at my brother and my father and saw both of them with their eyes glued to the screen and their mouths dropped in awe as well. WHAT. A. FILM.

Red’s speech at the end kept using the phrase “I hope…”, which of course is a huge turnaround from earlier when he told Andy that hope was dangerous. But also: while it’s been a few decades since I read the novella this was based on, I believe it ends with this speech because we, the reader, don’t actually find out if Red ever meets up with Andy. As an ex-con, Red is expected to get have some difficulty crossing the border into Mexico, so it’s left open-ended. (Andy was still using his assumed identity, so he was able to breeze through.) But for a movie, I think this was a valid change to make. That catharsis from seeing their reunion is so powerful. (Also, I love how concerned your dogs get for you. I’ve been watching for a few months, and they really worry about your well-being. It’s so heartwarming.)

This is the guy's version of a Rom-Com, so to speak. Great movie about friendship and hope. Don't give the captain too much credit for helping Andy with the Sisters. The only reason he beat up their leader was because the warden was using Andy for his finances and needed Andy in one piece. Basically Andy bought protection by helping the Warden and the captain out with their finances. "Better get started living or get started dying." Powerful. I gotta take those to heart now before I leave this world.

Something you should know. The Shawshank Redemption is NOT about Andy. It was about Red, the whole time. If you remember in the beginning, Red starts to tell us a story about his friend, Andy Dufresne. When he had to sneak Rita Hayworth into Shawshank prison. Andy was always innocent so there was nothing to redeem. Red was the one whom needed to Redeem himself, who had to pay for his crimes & he did. Stephen King, the author of Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption confirmed all this too. I’m so glad you loved the movie.

@@coolexio I don't agree with that assessment either. To redeem means to buy back. Andy was innocent and brought back his freedom and it included the money which was seen as his severence pay. You're supposed to slowly realize just how evil he is. This is so you can see it how andy does. At first, the scariest thing is the sisters. Then feel that he's safe after they're gone, only to realize it's a false safety and the guy at the top is the real problem. Brilliant movie

@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Same as you, I didn't ever get (or want) a cellphone until 2005 (a matte black RAZR, thank you very much), when the TV show I was working on got a 2nd season, and the producers' only notes for me were to please get a cellphone. My next RAZR had maps and GPS, and within days of buying it (because I'd dropped my original one from my shirt pocket into my toilet) I was coming home to Echo Park, in LA on the 10, and the 110 was blocked off by construction, so I had to divert into the middle of downtown, which is just fraught. The problem with that is, taking downtown surface streets, you're likely to end up on Figueroa thinking you're ok, but next thing, you're barreling toward Pasadena. So I pulled over and let the GPS guide me home. Unfortunately, the next year, I drove myself and my dog up to Big Basin, in the Santa Cruz mountains for a fun camping trip. I just went all the way up the 5, blithely letting the GPS run the whole time, so I wouldn't miss the left turn at the 152. My next phone bill was like over $400. Thankfully, I convinced Verizon to reverse the charges.

This is an excellent movie, and probably the best prison movie. Robot Chicken did a spoof of it using Batman charactets, even has Mark Hamill reprising the voice of The Joker (he voiced The Joker in the animated series and nailed it). It's called "The Arkham Redemption" and it is still on KZbin.

Rewatching this amazing reaction & the Brooks scene hit hard today. I used to be an addict & I was never caught or arrested. Now I'm sober, good job, family. I've seen so many friends go to jail or pass. It completely upended their lives. One kid, he grew up 2 blocks away, super good dude. The only problem was his addiction. He never begged, borrowed, or stole a thing. He's probably about 45 now, spending his days on another stretch for poss. His 21 yo son passed last year from an od. It hit me really hard. My dad was an addict, I'm doing everything I can do my son doesn't become what I was, it's a cycle that is hard to break though. People don't understand what it's about. You're treated terrible, less than human by everyone. I still don't talk to any family except one aunt. I just wish people would try to understand & have a bit of empathy.

Best moment of the movie definitely has to be when Andy finally emerges from the sewage pipe and the rain washes away all of the crud from his body (great metaphor) and the music swells! It feels extremely relieving and cathartic! (Fun fact: the song that plays in the background during that scene is named "The Shawshank Redemption" the same title as the movie.)

A perfect movie, love it, even in its darkness. The message is one we all need now and then. “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” For some trivia, Andy kept his hammer in the Bible under the chapter Exodus, the story that tells of the Jews escaping their slavery in Egypt. The woman on the poster that the warden calls “Miss Fuzzy Britches” is Raquel Welch from the movie One Million Years B.C. She was a real sex symbol of the 60s and 70s and is still with us today at age 82. Clancy Brown, who plays the Captain Hadley, the head guard, also voices Mr. Crabs on SpongeBob SquarePants.

This is one of the great movies in history, and in my opinion one of the greatest endings, I have actually been to this prison before it is in Mansfield Ohio, they actually do a haunted prison tour around Halloween, I have talked to people who work there and they all have stories, They said you never wanted to be on the top tier of the prison and have enemies, I'm sure you can imagine you would get tossed off and it has happened...The prison opened in the late 1800s and closed in 1990, a piece of the tree lies by the prison because lightning hit it years ago, It made headlines over here

I love, love your sudden realization of what Andy did. What he was able to pull off. I have seen this movie many times. As mentioned its my late father and I’s fav. I know what happens but watching you see it the first time and the flash of “wtf” I am a huge Stephen King fan. His novels are my past time. Actual books not reading off a screen. I would have been thrilled in that shawshank library. I remember my Father being shocked after seeing this movie several times and finally noticing it was a stephen king story. I said there are a few king stories made into movies you may not realize. He just kept saying, “but its not scary” lol. The author himself had told a story of browsing some book racks whilst waiting for an appointment or in between travel destinations. There was a lady also checking out the books, she said she had no idea what book to get, he cheekily suggested shawshank(it was a short story rereleased with the movie to have the movie photo cover) she looked near interested till she saw my beloved authors name. She then gasps and says, oh i dont read his work, he can only write terrible scary stories. Or something along those lines were said….. to the actual man that wrote it. Had she picked it up his photo was on the back of the book. At the time it was an current photo. Needless to say, my guy had a good laugh. Glad you loved this movie. Never imagine a prison story being somewhat of a mood lifter after something like green mile. I admit not all king stories made into movies work. But some like this absolutely do. Tell the co pilots i luv them.

The one thing that always bugged me about this movie is why Andy didn't just hide the rock hammer in the hole? I mean if the warden found the hole he'd be screwed anyway and they'd most likely tear his room apart and find the hammer. Seems an unnecessary risk to hide it in the bible when he has a perfectly good hole in the wall to stash things in.
