Escaping from the prison was great, but cleaning out all the warden's bank accounts afterward was the cherry on top. Fun thing that a lot of people seem to miss: when the warden finds the Bible Andy left behind, and turns to the page where the rock hammer was hidden, it's the first page of Exodus. Nice touch.

This is one of the greatest movies ever. Stephen King is largely considered a horror writer but some of his greatest stories aren’t horror. The Green Mile and Stand by Me which is based on a short story called The Body are two incredible movies to watch. Happy New Year my friend.

Yes, King is incredibly talented. There hasn't been a book I've read of his that didn't have something in worth reading, and the same goes for his movies, even the ones that haven't been the greatest, were still enjoyable.

Well said. Many movies nowadays don't seem to understand the power of character development but that's where it always pays off in emotional impact.

Yes, a lot of writers tend to forget and change characters to the plots, rather than developing the characters and dropping them into plots and see what happens.

My father grabbed me and my brother and took us to see the Thursday, 10pm sneak-preview and we had no idea what to expect. At the end of the film I noticed my mouth was wide open from amazement. I turned to so see both my brother and my father with their mouths dropped in awe as well. What a film!

When you say "he thought of everything," that includes that Andy couldn't leave w/o saving his friend. He had to give him a *purpose*, something to do after prison. This movie is a rare-very rare!-case of a written work being expanded and improved by a cinematic adaptation. Another is Jaws. I first saw this at 19 ... now it leaves me crying every time.

24:02 It's my opinion that he never intended to ask the Warden for a new trial, or an early release. He needed the Warden to think he was broken, and to go back to "the way things were" as his accountant. Only then would the Warden trust him so implicitly, as to allow him access to things like his clothing, his shoes, and to physically handle his records, thus allowing for the swap to occur.

Brilliant movie. At times a little hard to watch, it was such an unflinching look at life behind bars. But there was beauty in the harsh realness much like there is still beauty in the world despite the often times harsh realities of life. One of my favorite films.

Movie magic. Just before the age of internet, when movies would come along with little publicity and you would walk into a screening relatively blind and be absolutely blown away. I remember when this arrived at the theater I was working at and my manager remarked "What an awful name for a movie." And, as you pointed out in your intro, Showdown, this was far from a box office success. But I watched almost every movie that came out in those days...hey, it was a minimum wage job, of course I'm going to take advantage of the perk of free movies. :) So many iconic scenes in this, so many quotable lines, but I think my favorite image is the look of righteous defiance in Andy's eyes when the warden warns him to shut the music off and he cranks up the volume. That moment resonated with me and always stuck. No matter how dire a situation you may be in, no matter how overpowered you might be by a crooked authority figure, you show them defiance. You let them know, as long as you are breathing, you cannot be broken.

I think of all the music out there I haven't heard because I spent so much time watching so many movies and reading. I think of that when I watch reaction channels. I think of my son only knowing certain songs as commercial jingles. The only one I question but still enjoy their thoughtful commentary is the gentleman who has a film degree from a prestigious university on a few of the huge films I know I, my parents and everyone else going through film school were required to see and write about. Then again, I got through AP English class with the help of Cliff notes so maybe it was a time management thing for him Even if something isn't the first time ever exposed to something, I think their is value in seeing someone's reaction in the first time they concentrate and focus on something start to finish. Their fresh insights and emotions.
