Took my son on the 25th to see the re-release in theaters, this was the first time he has ever watched it. Just the see the way this 13-year-old (that loves Xbox and action movies) was glued to the screen and the look on his face when the prison break was revealed was the greatest thing ever. It instantly became his favorite movie. On a side note, my wife and I took our honeymoon in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo over 18 years ago, just because of this movie.

Stil think this movie is the one of the two greatest stories ever about friendship. This movie and Stand By Me are the two best in my opinion. I would also say this is one of few movies I didn't want to end. When they met on the beach and the credits were rolling I still wanted to see what happened next.

Yeah, no kidding. I love these Rewatchables a lot, but the nitpicking segment - there is often some serious lack of critical thinking and imagination on so many of them. I think the nitpicking category is the weakest in most of the episodes.

This movie was based on a Stephen King novella. Only 100 pages long. I read it before I saw the movie and the novella may be even better. But because it's only 100 pages the movie is really true to the story. The novella is part of a 4 story mix none are horror. It's called 'Different Seasons' and all of them were made into movies. 'The Body' was the first and the movie version is known as 'Stand by Me' which is also an amazing story and movie. King wrote each story between his big novels. The guy just couldn't stop writing.

I hate to keep doing this, but I used to live 15 minutes from where the movie was shot. Anyway, another fun fact. Most of the non-prison interior scenes were still shot in the prison. If memory serves, the court room scene was shot in the old infirmary. Or it may have been in the main lobby of the prison. In any case, there are about five rooms that were used for multiple different scenes. The "Brooks was here" room was also used for a couple other scenes. The Warden's office was used for a couple other things too. And...the hole through which Andy escaped is there for all to see. It's about 4 feet long with plexiglass on both ends. Again, if you're a big Shawshank fan, you really should do the tour. And that's the end of my pimping for the Ohio Tourism Board or whatever it's called. :)

With regards to Andy crawling through the pipe, I remember reading something that was scientific, I can't remember where, but it said that the gases that would be within the pipe would have killed him and that he wouldn't have gotten that far through the pipe at all. However, this is one of the all time great movies, and most importantly, it is a movie, so it's sometimes best to not let something like that ruin the story. I know it's just small nitpicking, but I'm just sayin...

FWIW, the Ohio Reformatory in Mansfield, OH was well known in Ohio before Shawshank. It's supposedly haunted and had been holding tours, etc., long before the Shawshank crew showed up. The cool thing is all the stuff from Shawshank is there now. Seeing the actual set vs. how it looks in the movie is a testament to how well movies do things. Finally, I've ridden my motorcycle down the road they used in the scene where you see Red's bus from behind. It's wild to watch Shawshank and see so many things I'm familiar with. The scene where Andy stands with his arms extended in the rain after the escape was shot about 10 feet from Ohio Route 13. You see it in person and again, you're impressed by how the movie was shot. Also, there is an actual modern prison on the site of the old Reformatory. You see some of it in the "Affleck Helicopter" shot. Finally, there is a Harley-Davidson dealer about 1000 feet from Andy's "rain scene." If you're into Shawhank and have the interest, a trip to the Reformatory is well worth the effort. "Brooks was Here" and "So was Red" is still carved into a room that served as three different sets in the movie. Cool stuff.

Andy not moving cells over 20 years was helpful. I don't know if this happens in prisons, but it seems like it could have. Two months in the hole and the poster never waivered. How long has it been since the hole was complete? Imagine it being done for more than 2 months and he waited cause he was content until the Warden put him in the hole. I've heard the water Tim Robbins was is was not sanitary for him to be in, let alone the lightning. I feel like the wall by the tree was made for the movie, but I may be wrong. This is my favorite movie, my most rewatchable. When Facebook was first available to me in 2005 and creating groups was the thing for two days, I created the Have to Watch Shawshank When it's On group. I was in my early 20's, thought it was cool, got 30 members, but hey if it's on, I'm watching it..... when I get cable back. I saw it at the theaters last weekend and went home and watched it again. It's long but doesn't feel long.

Watch Escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood. Scary similarities. I saw Shawshank in the theater. I love it.

Gandolfini as Boggs makes the comparison a little more direct since the would-be rapist in Alcatraz is a big burly guy.

"I _had_ your mother, she wasn't that great." The poster nit pick isn't one: the poster hangs from the top so it's an effective curtain; reloads on adhesive from Red. The sewage crawl: he breathing through his mouth...mostly.

you'd think he'd have thought to have a clothespin on his nose or something...still probably would have passed out from inhaling those toxic fumes through the mouth. probably would have burned as well

Where are these deleted scenes? He says a few are on KZbin but I couldn't find them. Also, how did they show them when it ran on Showtime again in the late 90's? Was it as a director's cut where they are in sequence with the rest of the movie, or after the end credits?

Just discovered this page last week and it's fantastic. After listening to the analysis of Shawshank Redemption, I'd like to ask of I'm the only one that notices "Life" by Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence may just have similar themes or probably be the comical version of Shawshank Redemption.

True fact : Michael Douglass was an early champion for the movie. The push by him and some other Hollywood heavyweights caused the film to get discovered by Academy voters.

How do they do 100+ minutes on this film and never discuss what the title "The Shawshank Redemption" actually *means*? Who exactly is redeemed?

Shawshank is DEFINITELY on my top 10 list, as 80% of my favorite movies are from the 1990's. Movies took bigger risks, and most of all, not really any cell phones or social media, so people had a longer attention span. Frank Darabont watched GOODFELLAS every Sunday during the filming to keep the rhythm going. Also, Shawshank was like JAWS in the sense that everything went wrong, the shark never worked, but in hindsight it was fate. Tom Cruise turned down the role of Andy THANK GOD, and the cast was PERFECT. It's a PERFECT film. Also, both "Fresh Fish", and Red's mugshot are Freeman's real son. Clancy Brown is TERRIFYING in "Highlander".

Shawshank Redemption is the greatest horror movie of all time. Think about all these scary situations: 1. Andy's wife cheats on him. 2. Andy gets convicted for a crime he didn't commit. 3. He goes to prison for life. 4. His life as a wealthy banker gets taken from him. 5. He gets sexually assaulted by three prisoners. That is scary.
