Hi and welcome to episode 29 of the Shed of Dreams ES 335 guitar build series. In this episode I will finally get to joint the body to the neck, if only for a little while. Before I can attach the fretboard and carve the neck I need to cut the neck tenon. This is not an easy task so I will cover it in detail for those who wish to learn how to do it themselves.
I hope you enjoy the video, if so please consider subscribing using the link below.

Thanks for going in to such detail on how to get the neck angle correct. A great way to do it.

Best build on KZbin by a country mile. What you are producing is basically a step by step guide on how to construct a 335 from scratch - which would be a great series if you were to put them out on a dvd. Amazing stuff.

Really been interesting to watch the semi-hollow build.. that neck fitment is a a crucial part of any guitar for sure. No bolt on necks to be able to shim. That shoulder plane really comes in handy.. and using that neck blank was super smart to set the proper angle.. love this build.. cant wait for episode 146.. "spraying a burst".. even this is one of your longest build in installments.. the interest level is super high.. great job..

Thanks mate, I do enjoy doing set necks but it is a one time only deal. The shoulder plane is a good bit of kit to have around the shop. I've already beaten my episode record by six on this build and there's plenty to come yet!!

Thanks for the shout out buddy. Looks great! My last 335 build, the one for GGBO21 I kept telling myself to be sure and get the tenon cut before I glued the fretboard on. You know how you keep working these things out in your head? Well I went out to the shop one night and glued the board on. Didn’t realize until later how I had screwed the pooch. Think about fitting that tenon with the fretboard in the way. Oh gosh!

Thanks Dane, I can only imagine how hard fitting that tenon must have been but I totally get how easy it is to do that sort of thing!! This thing is really starting to come together now, getting exciting!

This has answered so many questions for me and now I have no excuse to not build the guitar that I have had the wood for for ages. I think the way you work things out is top notch. Your videos are amongst the best ones that I have watched. Again, I can't wait for the next one.

Very exciting patrick. Just seeing the fingerboard in place when your angle finding plank was inserted was really evocative of the finished guitar.

I am building a scratch build ES-335 and have found many of your tips very handy. You cut the neck angle by sloping the tenon. I sloped the body mortise in order to get the desired neck angle plane.

Haha, if you break it down into small tasks it becomes a lot easier. They aren't easy but they are achievable with a bit of planning :)

Did I spot a continuity issue? You’d set the marking gauge to 21mm to mark the amount to cut off the bottom of the tennon at the shoulder end but then seemed to use the gauge again to join up the ends you had marked off with the square along each side. Trouble is that the amount wouldn’t be 21mm at the other end of the tennon or am I missing something?
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, I'm not getting anything past you am I lol. You are absolutely correct, I changed the setting on the marking gauge off camera, it's was just set to the marks at the end of the tenon I put in with the knife :)

Is that a long tenon or a short tenon joint?
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams 3 жыл бұрын
It's a long one, it extends well into the neck pickup route. I'm not sure how long the Gibson long tenon is but this one is 75mm instead of the 60mm shown on the drawing.
