In India, around 90 percent of marriages are arranged by parents, based on traditional criteria such as caste, religion and horoscopes. Love has a subordinate role, as being in love is seen as a weakness and love across social boundaries is considered dangerous, which can lead to honor killings. The police often support the families and put men in prison for allegedly raping their wives instead of protecting lovers.
The Love Commandos are an Indian NGO that works on a voluntary basis to protect couples from forced marriage. They help couples to avoid falling into disgrace and danger. The members, including business people, lawyers, journalists and human rights activists, come from different parts of society and offer legal support and shelter for couples under threat. The organization operates a hotline that is used around 7,000 times a day.

Don’t ever let your parents talk you into coming home because they accept your decision and want to do a proper marriage. It’s a trap. I have seen too many documentaries where that happens.

The only thing I liked about this particular love marriage arrangement is the background checks about if each person is telling the truth. By the way, I do believe that everyone should have the choice to choose their life long partner. For example, in the love marriage, one of the couples in the documentary shouldn’t be together. The guy has no job, no skills in a trade, the girlfriend is just out high school and no job. What are they going to live on…. Love? That’s not practical and their relationship will be a tough one if it survives.

Even if background checks are good once the couple got married, the husband and even his parents get greedy, they ask for more money from the wife, if she could not give them, the husband and parents treats her badly or wife ended dead. I watched many news and documentaries of this. Background checks are of no use with arranged marraiges. Wife will only know the husband’s and in-laws’ intentions if she live with them.

Mostly such weddings end in domestic violence because such marriages are out of lust or want of girls or boy's father's property. The intentions are not pure, mostly is is materialistic

The last two couples seem so sad 😞 I didn’t feel the love they claim to have for each other. Without a job and a proper home it’s difficult to keep a bond strong and healthy. When they eloped it probably felt right at the moment but I think they’re regretting it. The young couple is still in the puppy love stage.

I'm happy that there are safe houses for these people. These patriarchal societies must be abolished and freedom for choice and marriage must be granted. Arranged marriages don't work . They never do . One of the partners will always suffer.

But largely the women in arranged marriages now have upper hand, the men are wary more. the thing is women now can consent which wasn't a thing 20 years ago. Also she can leave whenever she wants, the women laws are now many many _many_ times stronger than they were 20 years ago

It would be ideal to report Dowry harassment. But the society wont leave you to live in peace. You will be the black sheep amongst all . The majority are supporters of this culture. Men enjoy the fact that their wives will bring in free cash. If the have only daughter... they will repent this. If they have sons then they will carry on this tradition with their chest held high. If they have sons and daughters..they will squeeze every penny out from their daughter in laws and will use this to give dowry to the in laws of their daughters . This is why india has a law of preventing gender of fetus from being disclosed before delivery. Ppl would think of girl child as a "burden" and would abort or kill her. So there are laws against female foeticide and infanticide.

I knew a man at work whose private life was ruiined by an arranged marriage. He was dutiful and accepted the bride in India who was arranged for him, she ticked all the boxes of class, background etc But, she was a selfish neurotic who made his life miserable. He basically had to build a separate life around her. He was too kind to divorce her and also did not want to bring shame on the family but he greatly missed female companionship.

Interesting documentary - I'd love to see a follow up after 1 year. Shivani and Gaurav are a cute couple who seem well suited and happy together. Sahil clearly loves Dayita and seems like a very caring man who'll do everything possible to provide a secure future for his wife. I hope her family will eventually agree to reconcile with them because you can see the estrangement is painful for her. I'd worry about the future for Pooja and Anil though. She's very young and naive and was swept away by her first romance, even though it should have raised some red flags if she was more mature. I suspect the bloom will wear off quickly when reality hits that she's tied to a man with no job and no skills. In my view he put his own interests ahead of hers by pursuing the relationship and took advantage of her innocence and lack of life knowledge. If she was my daughter, I'd be very concerned and keep a watchful eye on her.

I’ve been watching a lot of True Crime Stories for Several Years that are about couples where one kills the other and 88 % of them are from India and India parents abusing their children horribly and I’m sure that alot of this wouldn’t happen if they were allowed to date the ones their parents have chosen them to marry. Even if they were chaperoned that should not be a problem because I feel people Act Badly when they are miserable and they pass that hurt on their children also I just don’t understand why people don’t learn from their mistakes

Still there isn't much transparency in arranged marriages. Also how the heck you're gonna understand a person just within a few months. Sounds so stupid 😂. There should be atleast 2 years or more. Also you'll never get to know about the person more deep like. Maybe they're drug addicts, have any illness , or have much more body counts and a lot. The saddest part is that the majority of parents won't allow their kids to take much time. I'm also indian but tbh I don't support this 🐂💩 idea of arranged marriages.

I dont know if it is the fault of incompatibilty or of the forced arranged marriage. We all know most decent families, educated or not, do not force a girl to select a guy. We know thevgirls who rejected 50 suitors, we know the guy who rejected a 100 suitors. Marrage incompatibility can not be known unless you are in a marrage, I think most women are getting resouceful enough to get out of an dull or mraningless wedlock. Guys too have become open minded to accept these bright women.

Most of love marriages and cohabitation ends in divorce or one partner leaving another one. So think long term before getting involved in any relationship. And I don't like this concept of caste system. This will create more genetic defects. Gotra should be different as common ancestor is not good thing between couple. Anyways. Good luck to all of these. I do not support this because parents do anything for their children they sacrifice their own life which they were able to live happily but a child in life makes someone tiresome and difficult because a child often needs nore time and attention. And when you see your own children running away is not good thing and is a complete slap and disrespect to all of the hardwork and care , love your parent put into you.

Did I hear that right?! You can't rent a place or get a hotel room? If this is true, it seems absurd. People should always be able to have accommodation, whether they are married or not or single or not. It seems sad that parents say they love their children, but they will force them to marry someone they don't want to be with or will disown their children if they pick someone else. That is not love in my opinion. You should always love your children unconditionally and while that includes wanting what is best for them, it should include their happiness. Also, having to marry straight away doesn't seem sensible. I am so glad I did not marry someone straight after leaving school, even though I might have been attracted to them, it's very difficult to know what you want and need at that age and I would never marry anyone who's unemployed or unemployable, even living in a county that has welfare. I don't think that the little girl is making a good decision, I feel sorry for her.

I personally hate arranged marriages but there's no way they're failing 95% more than love marriages lol. If anything, they're way more succesful and have a miniscule chance of failing. They're basically engineered to ensure social, financial and cultural compatibility; frankly I don't like this because it feels so artifiicial but make no mistake, it dramatically increases their rate of success.

It's customary for the bride's side to bring dowry in Asian culture -- but my parents ended up covering most of the expenses for my older siblings. So, if I decided to marry a millionaire's daughter, how much would I get in dowry -- or ending up losing our lives over dowry even though it's unnecessary.

Born and still living in South Africa, speaking as an older version of myself, with 2 children and not married, I think the culturally arranged marriages would be better than love marriages because of the stats in my country now. So many single mothers because fathers have abandoned their responsibilities. Poverty plays a role because the men cannot afford the dowry to marry. It's a terrible situation. If it was arranged in the same class, clan, etc., I think there would be much less fatherless children. Particularly among black South Africans. I also think if you are mentally ready for marriage and understand the dynamics, it may be easier to learn to love your partner and it would last longer than a relationship based solely on emotions. Anyway, we learn everyday.
