There's another important thing with the Fingering Shield, although it does technically apply to all shields. If you put the Shield Bash/Shield Crash weapon art onto it, and use it in combat, you basically can't be guard-broken or staggered during the animation.

… and you can be staggered by getting hit from the side/behind and stunned by status effects. Shield crash also is rough to direct it's not to be used as brainless as one might think. If the opponent is brainless tho, then monkey-spamming the AoW will do the work. Positioning, spacing, timed rolling, mobility AoWs, hyperarmor, blocking, backstabs, status effects and status Talis. Ah yes, and ganking, yikes.

In Eldenring I finally realized that the only way you can play in a way and have fun is if you completely stop giving a f°ck about other peoples acknowledgement. Not just in PvP but for everything. Is it really that unimaginable for someone that I enjoy summoning other players for hard bosses? Cause I find it more enjoyable to face off against an epic foe with other real breathing people and everyone included knows how epic that boss is? 😎 This way maybe two more people see me winning instead of just me. Cause I can beat every boss in Eldenring by myself. I find it easier actually cause then the HP of the boss is reduced and the moveset is more _"predictable"_ if that makes sense. But I like Co-Op and so winning with comrades in arms is more of a fun time for me. ☺ There are people out there vehemently insisting that this is not how _"good people"_ play the game. Fun factors fully excluded. The solution truly was an easy one. Do not overthink it. And do not seek the approval of those who are truly not important for your own fun. 👍

Yep, this is the way. It's why I use things like Moonviel, bleed, spirit ashes, and co-op summons without a hint of shame. If someone doesn't like how I play my game, tough! What are they gonna do? Or if you are an Reviewer ready to do like 60 minute video about how DS2 was not that bad, but then they were playing as an Mage with Dark infused Rapiers only and skipped the Optional bosses (Zud and Zallen, Blue Smelter demon and the Gank squad of the dead, Chariot) yet they complain about Malenia.

I should mention... my best time was a 3-vs-3 in one of Ceilids caves, but I forgot which one. It is this one where three Crystallians attack the player and after many attempts, I finally got two players who did not die ✌😎 and kept the other two Crystallians busy. We all defeated one each around the same time which was super epic I think.

Ive played through DS1 to 3 for over 1k hours and from experience i can tell people who are giving you salt are the ones who most of the time just went into the game having a bad day, what i am always doing is "its okay, you did well" instead of trashtalking the guy back and usually people calm down right away after few positive exchanges and themselves being sorry. it sounds like a fairy tale but people are angry at that moment and once they vent a bit on you their personalities shift and its noticeable.

Great video as always! When shield poking was at it's strongest I use to delete shield pokers in an average time of 15s in most battles. Since the setup was so strong I didn't share it's weakest to a particular weapon art and I cycled between moving parry and using the weapon art on the Eleonora's Poleblade, so that shield pokers never caught on. The weapon art when spaced/timed right, which of course I trained it hard, was able to clip the shield/poker right above the shield staggering them. That opened them to the full hit and the follow up, which in an arcane build could one shot some people. When they didn't get oneshot, they got their guard broken and then I would swap to misericorde and repose finish them. The way I dealt with them using parry backstep parry, reverse backstep reverse parry (my signature move) or just moving and rolling in a pattern where I fooled the shield poker into thinking they had optimal attack range so that I could parry bait them and repose with dagger. Usually, I shared combat knowledge with people but you're right in that Shield Poking was that much of a threat that I had to safe keep my way of dealing with them so that they wouldn't learn from me as I had no idea when Fromsoft would fix it. Edit: I forgot that I was also at the time primary a Moghwyn's Sacred Spear user and also used incantations on an arcane build so that gave me multiple avenues of setting up people.

One think that somehow worked for me when fighting fingerprint shield pokers was a offhand weapon with a ice status effect. Somehow the rapier doesn’t get bounced off and the quick attacks make the frost status build faster.

I won't lie, I used a variation of shieldpoking in Elden Ring PVE during the early OP days when Fingerprint was basically overkill and people thought Malenia was the hardest boss in FromSoft history. *_[laughs in Sekiro meme face]_* Never got around to do PVP before the nerf, and in the meantime I found fishing for crits on bosses with a Rapier to be much more satisfying than just shieldpoking them to death with it, so gradually I used shieldpoking less and less, and now I relegated the use of a shield entirely to my katana guard counter build as a way to simulate Sekiro in Elden Ring; turns out shields can still take hits for days and some guard counters are actually stupid fast, so that's what I'm banking on now.

@@ksw8514 Sekiro's difficulty *_is_* exaggerated, mostly by those who thought it was a pure soulsborne, but you can *_literally_* shrug off Malenia's deadliest attacks over and over again with an upgraded Brass Shield you can get from any soldier in the game -- let alone a decent greatshield -- without the need to even optimize it, so needless to say you can very much hard-cheese Malenia with even less than some skillful throwing of frost pots. Sekiro players frankly wished they had all the cheese ER provided -- and they already have quite a bit still within the more rigid structure of their game.

Easy counters to shield pokers are cypher Pata or coded sword, both of which which cannot be repelled by standard shield blocking. I know, holy, whaaaa, but they also have arts that further improve their guard piercing.

The info at 7:06 is incorrect. Impaling Thrust bypasses something like 85% shield protection, not 40%, and I'm pretty sure Piercing Fang completely bypasses shields.

Piercing Fang totally did/does bypass shields, hence I just answered shield pokers by switching to the Nagakiba with Piercing Fang and since most of the shield pokers were fat rolling scrubs that sucked at adjusting on the fly they posed little threat to me. However Impaling Thrust only did 40% damage when sword poking was at its peek.

I remember solo invading a host using full bullgoats with Serpent Hunter and Fingerprint Shield. All I had were my trusty Noble Slender Sword and Banished Knight Shield and just sprinted around him for a backstab into a parry. Square off is also a handy tool for dealing with shields.

I have never done a build with a shield, I didn't know they were capable of that, I have done parry builds with small shields and parrying dagger but then in most bosses it is just easier to roll. I tried once, I made a character, farmed a great shield and nothing, I didn't like the weight nor could I use it well due to the low stamina... I abandoned the idea xD

I ditched the shield I thing around the time of the best souls game (darks souls 2) mid way into my first run. I was doing the Covenant of champion and realized that even I blocked with a 100% shield it was much better to learn the timings to dodge. They are only good in ganking pvp, 1v1 they have too much counter play to rely on as a sole means of defense and playstyle. After came to the realization I dropped block shield for parry ones or parry off hands such as the painting guardian sword.

Another possible counter: Dragonbolt Blessing, the tier 2 hardness means that most weapons that can shield poke will bounce of you, giving you an opening. The only exception are great spears.

Yhorm's shield and machete was my favourite DS3 build of all time. If someone attacked the shield then panic rolled it was a roll-catch every time. Fighting PVE was a blast too, it really teaches you where bosses blindspots are, because instead of rolling you keep the shield up and circle them. Circle correctly and you don't even get your shield hit. Very fun, 10/10 strategy, putting a greatshield on changes so much about how you play

Poking was a bonus especially against bosses or pve when aiding squishy wiz kids but my favorite move was to just grab the shield with both hands and crush a reds skull against my full frontal crusade like a streaking paladin in heat. Especially in elden ring where being confronted with my finger favourite shild would drive people mad and cause them to bleed out of every orafice.

Whenever there's a tough enemy (that doesn't use too much magic) a great shield is my usual go to. Clean Rot Knight, Crucible Knight, and even the Night Cavalry, (even if the first two uses a few magic or skills) they can't break through my defense that easily.

I've never really shield poked, but I enjoy shield play. Having options other than roll to deal with an attack is nice, and you get the brass shield super-early in Elden Ring. So long as you're okay with mid-rolling, it opens up the option for heavier armor. Most fashion falls into the heavy category, so I'm down for that.

Tbh, I don't know if shieldpoke has been balanced or just requiring more effort to use. I had redmane gank squad in that seemed to have killing, or should I say, farming, invaders down to a science, with the host perched in a specific spot to know exactly where the invader spawned, and to rush them down with an ovl phantom (madness incants + moonveil). The host used fingerprint + scholars shield and rapier. Idk if he just had 99 endurance but I couldn't seem to break the guard. The only thing I managed to do was annoy them by sneaking out of the castle, at which point they fogwalled. However, this has been my only real experience with shield poking after the nerf, so dont have that much experience. Plus it didnt help that my build wasn't exactly try-hardy (heck it started as a wretch lol). Anyways that's my 2 cents.

Back in the day of the old Fingerprint stone shield you didn't need fancy magic to boost it, just level it up to +25 and equip the guard boost talisman and voila, you had a great shield with 100 guard meaning that you take no stamina damage if you get hit so you could poked with any weapon without any risk of getting guard break ever, even with 0 stamina left. (It was my build to help people defeat Godfrey / Hoarah loux since he deal physical dmg only i could face tank him all fight)

DS1 taught me to block. Every class starts with a shield, and 100% physical block shields are plentiful and easily accessible. DS2 taught me to dodge. No class starts with a shield, and 100% physical block shields are much more difficult to find. By the time I got to DS3 and ER, I'd stopped bothering with shields entirely. At most I'd wear one on my back for its passive benefits while two-handing my weapon. I did have to go back to DS1 and specifically play a parry-and-riposte build to learn how to parry. I should probably try a parry build on DS3 at some point. It does annoy me that Dark Souls allowed you to kick with any weapon/shield (except curved swords, for some reason, which got this weird slash-and-backstep attack) and Elden Ring removed that. Nobody wants to put Kick on a weapon when there are so many better/more interesting weapon arts available. I feel like the point of the kick was so that any player had a viable answer to players (or enemies) that hide behind their shield, but now you only have it if you choose that ash of war.

I love hatemail. I got some for using rejection and killing a phamtom that way lol by someone helping a twink character. Not even mad about the host and summon, I was dicking about rejecting people while using stealth. I got hand of Malenia'd after I got the kill, then a nice message about how I, an invader, have "no honor." So I sent them the clip of them dying to my rejection :D At the end of the day, someone will find something to complain about the tools devs supplied players. Just have fun with it!
