The "Kanon" (Keith Baker canon) rebuttal: Shifters aren't watered-down lycanthropes in the lore of Eberron. Some lycanthropes are ascended shifters, others are a mutation caused by the daelkyr (eldritch aberrations) or by the fiendish Wild Heart, neither of which needs shifters to function. The Eldeen Reaches has its own kind of artificer ("primal" rather than "arcane" in styling but mechanically identical), and shifters would certainly be that kind of artificer. Also worth noting that the pictured shifter holding a scroll is Eberron's "iconic character" for wizards, a shifter wizard named Baristi. The shifting traits are not hereditary in lore but represent the animal totem the shifter is closest to. So two longtooth shifters could have a razorclaw child if said child connected more to the "razorclaw" totem The Lycanthropic Inquisition's main issue was that it was a WAR against a much larger, more virulent group of lycanthropes which were attacking BOTH the shifters (whose own lycanthropes were turning evil and violent) and the the common folk of the region. The Church of the Silver Flame came from Thrane to fight the lycanthropes, allied with the shifters who were lycanthrope fighting experts and it was the eventual discovery of the first killed lycanthropes reverting to shifters after death which drove a wedge between the initial alliance between the three groups (and yes, the templar, the commoners and the shifters are three distinct groups here). Once the lycanthrope threat was contained and the curse stopped being spread by afflicted lycanthropes and only by natural again, the templar left . . . and THEN the commoners started exterminating shifters. Types of Lycanthropes and how they relate to Shifters, as well as Keith Baker's description of the conflicts : keith-baker.com/ifaq-lycanthropes/ The sections which detail death camps and a need for the the Keeper to clarify that shifters were people are written by people who are not Keith Baker. And when those people write stuff, it tends to conflict with the themes of Eberron, usually to give a clear bad guy or return to tired old tropes from other settings. The Silver Flame doesn't need to be an analogue for the Catholic Church, organized religion can be the bad guy without a single "lawful good in name only, corruption and witch burnings" group. Even ignoring the Kanon timeline that the shifters helped first and then paranoia caused a souring of relations which only boiled over after the Silver Flame left, the key part of the Inquisition was that there was a VERY REAL material threat to living beings in western Aundair at that time, and fighting supernatural evil is the Silver Flame's duty. How much bleed into killing people who didn't deserve it you want to put in is up to the DM at the end of the day, but far too many people are reading real world parallels as a matter of course.

I'd also add that 5th Edition lore, both canon and Exploring Eberron, implies that rather than being descended by lycanthropes, it is the other way around. That the natural gifts of the shifters were corrupted into the curse of lycanthropy, either by an overlord or by the daelkyr known as Drynn the Corrupter. Keith Baker also has a blog about the events that led to the lycanthropic purge.

Cool. I like that subscriber frame. Eberron lore. Love Eberron, ran it since it first came out. The lycanthropic purge of The Silverflame was a hefty weight on our 15yr campaign. We had characters with lycanthropy that helped locate and protect those shifters from the holy regime. Loved the whole storyline. I played a silverblood from 3.5. Fun times. Great vid as usual 👍

Good video, love seeing more Eberron! Just for a little clarification on some stuff, it's ambiguous if shifters or lycanthropes came first, and many shifters claim lycanthropes were created when the wild heart (overlord representing the fear of nature) corrupted some shifters into being lycanthropes. Also, the Silver Flame as a whole didn't purge out shifters, but there were some zealots (especially the pure flame in Aundair) were heavily against shifters and murdered many of them. I only say this because the silver flame as a whole gets a bad wrap for the actions of some of its smaller and more zealous splinter sects.

Ye Sharn has quite large population of shifter compared to other cities, I think its cause how huge Sharn is and its melting pot nature.

Naturally. Sharn is Steampunk version of Shadowrun/Cyberpunk. They make great Longshoremen at the Skydocks of Precarious. There are a few that work as Inquisitives, merchants, and professionals.

Omg thank you for this. It's something that gets glossed over in the setting but when you have players who want to play shifters you really need this information to help flesh your own interpretation of it out for the game. Thank you again, even if it's like shifter light information any information is welcome. (Would love more stuff on them but wizards don't seem to want to touch Eberron unless its to gloss over bits or remove Eberron specific stuff from books - Tasha's cauldron of everything felt as if it did a dirty on removing the only good shifter picture from the artificer class from the original book and then making the beast barbarian pages later look like a shifter but explicitly saying they where human. It's like wizards want the race gone and if that's the case, just be honest with players.) I have a alchemist shifter npc who's an Archeologist.... he's actually very fun. Might do a full PC build of one when I get to play and not DM.

I like the idea of shifters or any other race for that matter being able to possess aberrant dragonmarks. It can help mark that individual as something special and lead to numerous story opportunities. Just off the top of my hand, you can have a sect of the church that still sees the Silver Purge as a good thing put out a bit on the shifter because they see his dragonmark as a threat.

I doubt it, I think it was always edition specific. Everything in Dungeons & Dragons belongs in Eberron (that's the official statement), which means certain races or classes are never restricted from Eberron. You just need to figure out how they fit in. A Tiefling might be from the demon wastes, or a dragonborn a product of the mournland. Since every official game starts two years after the last war, there isn't much to retcon.

So in my setting there is Norse- like culture that had a lycantropy problem a millennia ago. Now it's not a problem anymore, turns out a couple of generations in and you can control yourself. So now there are vikings raiding everywhere that are a mix of humans, shifters and full lycantropes.
