I saw the full film in the theater in 1980 when I was 6 years old, same age as Danny Torrance. Yes, my dad was a derelict parent. I saw the interview with Danny Lloyd many years later and he talked about how he didn't even know it was a horror movie because Kubrick was very protective of him and kept him off set during the scenes that might scrare him. My own dad saw my brother and I turned around in our seats crying and cackled like a lunatic thinking that was the funniest thing in the world. Nightmares woke me up for about 6 weeks after. I still see that scene with room 239 as an adult and experience a hellish dejavu as the scars are still there.

It's very hard to imagine what it was like watching this trailer without knowing what the rest of the movie is like. Today it's impossible because the movie is so famous. Everybody recognizes jack nicholson wearing the red corduroy jacket, holding the axe just like they remember the twin girls, and Wendy's pale, distressed look. But in this trailer we don't see any of that. It was left a mystery. People had the luxury of watching it and not knowing what to expect. It's something most people won't ever experience again

Man this teaser is perfect. It nails the ‘unsettling’ feeling. The set design of the hotel is so artistic, it’s old-fashioned, and mostly uses plain or dark colors.. really gives that eerie feeling. Even things that may not have been intended initially but have become creeper with time - the grainy aesthetic of an old tape, the mysteriously simple and almost boring text… The music as well… just so creepy. And the blood pouring out is the climax of the whole mood, even at the end, the way it blurs the camera, leaving you with an obscured vision of a huge amount of blood flooding an entire floor of a hotel.

This is a classic example of a trailer's simplicity working in its and the movie's favor. If this were released today, you'd get jump cuts, stupid jump scares and dub steps to kill off the suspense. Here, all it is a still shot of credits, an elevator that looks like an ominous face, some nerve-racking avant-garde music and a gush of blood (or rusted oil to convey the look of blood) pouring down. This corridor is a separate set, and this scene was shot many times, with the set being re-painted and re-dressed each time, it's well-recorded by people who worked on the film and this information was a feature of the travelling Kubrick Exhibition. There are several hidden ramps for the blood to splash up over (such as the not-moving left-hand chair), and a transparent shield at the camera end of the set so that the blood will rise and cover the camera for a moment. There is also a gap to the left, where the blood exits, and the two tables are going off that way as the shot ends. These octagonal tables appear to be of a design well-known in Britain for being World War 2 'austerity' pattern and were often found in government and military buildings into the 1980s. The sequence is shot high-speed but only lasts about five seconds in real time.

I’ve been researching The Shining since the early 2000’s and have never came across definitive, official information and recounts of how this was done. The theories that I’ve heard were that it was a miniature, something like 1/3 of a scale. Another contradicts that, saying it was like you say, an actual corridor. Leon Vitali recounts that the crew were concerned they’d be engulfed by the flood, so it likely wasn’t a miniature. I also heard that it was done three times over the course of a year. One source claiming the blood was fake blood made for movies by a local company in England, while another source claims it was bull’s blood. They said it was done three times because the blood “didn’t look real.” But I dont know how shooting it multiple times would make the same source of Blood appear more real each consecutive shot. There’s a quick frame in Vivian Kubrick’s Making of the Shining where they’re cleaning up blood off the floor, but it doesn’t look like it’s from this same corridor. So maybe that was a deleted scene? I don’t know. All my research, however, has been done online through websites and video interviews. I know there’s a wealth of information out there in books that I’ve not come across, but you’d think at some point, someone whose read the Books would go online and contribute what they know of The Shining and the mystery of how this scene was shot.

I think what makes this so scary is the lack of context. You're just thinking "why is there so much blood in an elevator and how did Stanley Kubric manage such an effect?" The music doesn't make things any more assuring. It's quite ominous, surreal, and then it gets intense. It's a nice metaphor for Jack Nicholson himself. Something feels off about him, and it seems subtle at first, but then he goes over the top in a terrifying way, like a stream of blood so fierce that it knocks over furnishings. But back when this was first announced, you'd have no idea what it meant... And that is why I love it! It is so simple yet memorable in how crazy it is!

The music for this trailer is called "Clockworks (Bloody Elevators)" by Wendy Carlos.

So I’m 12 and I’m trying to convince myself that I could do it. I just watched this trailer for the first time, and I’m for some reason scared. What a great trailer

God, I just realized that the teaser for 2012 uses this track while a giant tsunami wipes out a monk’s mountain topped retreat
@bradsmith08893 жыл бұрын
Correct. That is what initially drove me to watch 2012. I was at a James Bond movie and the 2012 trailer first appeared with this same background.

Can’t believe the MPAA actually fell for Kubrick telling them the blood was just rusty water lmao

I wonder if the trailer would be better if the screen stayed black when the blood hit the camera and the music just stopped. Those last two title cards in dead silence on a black background. I think seeing the furniture getting pushed around with the red stained lens ruins it a bit.

What is this music? I can't find it anywhere!!! Not to mention that it's also the music playing during the teaser trailer for the movie 2012!!!

I find the elevator's floor indicators look disconcertingly like a pair of eyes looking down on me.

No. I don't think so. But I am trying to find the one I seen when it was first released. I remember snow, running and the theme music from the beginning. I think they were in the maze.

ItsGuppy there was a trailer that shows Jack Nicholson running in the snow, limping, axe in hand
