Shelley actually WAS emotionally drained. Kubrick made her do many takes of each scene to supposedly convey that on a visceral level...but I think he was just a psycho who liked to see women "beaten down" like that. Even Jack Nicholson admitted that Kubrick was much harder on Shelley than he was on him. This whole movie is rather misogynistic in a lot of ways.

I know Jack Nicholson is a phenomenal actor, but Shelly Duvall was screwed over. That’s authentic fear. Most never see that ever. If one says it’s too much, the director pushed for that level of fear. Both delivered the directors intent. And both were awesome

@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc She got a raspberry award. I do understand it’s the audience’s decision. However, we know many composers and artists dying thinking their greatest work was a flop (Bizet-Carmen). The director needed to support his actress after this. She did what he wanted and he pushed this. I can’t speak for the director. I can say he needed to say good job at the end of the day or more often than he did. There’s a balance. Regardless of the purpose. And he needed to step up more than he ever did for any artist. She did what he envisioned. That’s why the raspberry should never have happened. And that’s why he needed to defend his artist that supported his vision. I should see 30 articles and 12 Kubrick interviews praising Duvall’s work. Especially at this time. This may have sent more jobs and respect her way. Also, would have supported the fans that were moved by her performance and felt embarrassed they liked a performance the world laughed at. I think that did the most long term damage. Maybe he doesn’t defend His work. But Kubrick works in a team. Leaders defend their team when the time comes.

Shocking how Duvall won a Razzie for this given the amount of tension and fear she could show throughout the movie. Not even scream queens are able transmit such emotions in horror movies. Another important aspect to mention is that the camera rests on the actor faces in this film (something not very in horror movies), demanding much more energy and acting skills from the players.

That's why I find the claims that the film is misogynistic very confusing. Wendy is completely isolated with a mentally ill son, and a husband that's losing their mind that could easily overpower them- yet she consistently outwits him and diverts his violence. Then the film ends with her reuniting with the son and taking him to safety. I think the people acting like Wendy is a completely helpless and nimble character are kind of full of shit. What I see in the film with the character is true bravery. She's utterly alone and horrified, as I feel anyone would be in this situation, but she prevails and protects her child at every moment. Wendy is an incredible character. Just because she was afraid of Jack doesn't make her weak

That first look at Jack - I don’t know how they did it (lots of takes I guess) but his expression looks really wackadoo. Like the scene when he was staring at Wendy & Danny when he’d woken from that nightmare. Like a man who’s made his peace with shortly seeing the insides of his family.

Every single person in the audience's perception of the story has disappeared and they are all locked in the reality of the hopelessness fear and wretched suffering of every single argument they've ever had with someone they've loved. Kubrick is using domestic violence and the despair of the profound unhappiness felt in these moments as a tool for his horror.

Remember. It's Wendy who's the crazy one and she's imagining that Jack is the one who's going insane. Jack is trying to talk reasonably with her. But she had already brought a baseball bat assuming that he's going harm her.
