Stanley Kubrick, known for his compulsiveness and numerous retakes, got the difficult shot of blood pouring from the elevators in only three takes. This would be remarkable if it weren't for the fact that the shot took nine days to set up; every time the doors opened and the blood poured out, Kubrick would say, "It doesn't look like blood." In the end, the shot took approximately a year to get right.

I thought she was the best part of the movie. Characters in this genre hardly ever 'react' the right way to what's happening. I'm usually more annoyed by than scared for them. Duvall is heartbreaking, confused, horrified, helpless, desperate to survive and protect her child from something she can't comprehend.

I think one of the few perfected clips of all time in cinema (Kubrick having the most) is the last 10 seconds of this video. Starting with the elevator, then showing Danny's face of pure fright and anticipation, with the music peaking, with Jack right on the other side. Goosebumps every time.

As a child of the 1980’s and VCRs, it was such a treat to see this film for the first time in high definition and cinematic screen ratio. I enjoyed it so much I started rewatching other movies from decades ago. Good times. It’s so cool when the resolution is high and you can actually see film grain, dust particles, film cracks, imperfections, etc.

Finally, someone who understands the blood symbolism to the hotel's history. The late ex-owner of the Overlook Hotel, Horace Derwent, was a corrupt billionaire playboy and entrepreneur with Mafia ties that allowed the mob to carry out hits at the hotel during Derwent's ownership in the early twenties or thirties and forties time periods. The blood from the elevator symbolized all the bloodshed within the walls of the hotel and its past including the Indian curse which presumably animated the Hotel as a sentient demonic entity with a mind and spirit energy of its own from the start.

The juxtaposition of the Elevator of Blood to Danny frozen in fear is a masterwork.
@castortroy7704 Жыл бұрын
The blood flooded elevators were symbolic of the entire history of the Overlook Hotel's past that tainted its already active, sentient supernatural power (the Management) and fed the Hotel's power more with the countless deaths in its history due to former owner Horace Derwent, a corrupt billionaire playboy, accountant and entrepreneur that purchased and renovated the Overlook Hotel in the 1940's (1920's in Stanley Kubrick's loosely based film adaption of the Shining.) Derwent celebrated with his lavish Grand Fourth of July Costume Ball/unmasking party. Derwent was a crooked, shady businessman with underworld Costra Nostra connections and allowed multiple gangland hits to happen in the Overlook Hotel under his ownership. As a ghost later after dying as an elderly wealthy tycoon away from the Overlook's grounds, Derwent's ghost still returned to the Overlook Hotel he once owned and used to let gangland warfare be settled, run his prostitution ring, led by Derwent's wife, Sylvia Hunter Derwent and served as the Hotel's second in command of the Hotel's imprisoned evil human ghosts, demons and poltergeists. The blood symbolized the Overlook Hotel's history of gangland violence and murder plus the suicides and other deaths within the building. But in Kubrick's film the Hotel was built on a Native-American burial ground and cursed in turn by the vengeful Indians. Which fed the Hotel's power twice as much. In the film Horace Derwent's ghost made two appearances. First receiving oral pleasure in the upstairs hotel room from Derwent's closeted gay ex lover (Derwent was bi) Lewis Roger Toner aka Roger the dogman. Whom Derwent humiliated at his Costume unmasking party in the 1940's (1920's in Kubrick's film) by making Roger behave as a human dog and slave for the cruel amusement of Derwent and his wealthy, highly connected party guests. Derwent told Lewis aka Roger the dogman if he attended the Ball dressed as a dog Derwent would reconsider sleeping with Lewis again. The dog/bear scene was a much younger middle aged apparition of Derwent's ghost during the time of his lavish 1921 Fourth of July costume Ball celebration while the bald middle aged Injured Guest ghost Wendy saw later with an open scalp wound was a much elder, late middle aged apparition of Derwent's evil spirit in the later, late stage middle aged years of his life before he grew old. Both one and the same ghost. Just a difference in age and outwardly appearance. Both were Derwent's spirit in two different ages and appearances of his life.

Could be something to do with fertility. Both Danny and Wendy see the images of the elevator in their head, and Danny might have learnt that he should not have been conceived, and this was the reason why Danny seems to be less talkative with his mother for the rest of the movie. Maybe the reason why both Danny and Wendy both see them is because they both have the "shining" and as Wendy is much older than Danny her shining has worn off more. All theories but sorry for the long response ;)

Represents the many Indians that were killed underneath this hotel and seemingly were buried under since the movie says in the beginning the hotel was built on an Indian burial ground. The blood represents all of those souls basically trapped there and now inhabit that place as spirits
