Jason’s story of hearing Chutes Too Narrow for the first time is similar to mine of hearing XTC’s Skylarking. I was also just a classic rock guy until I went to college in ‘87. Hearing Skylarking changed everything for me.

I came for The Shins ranking and I stayed for the personal stories. Great analysis of a smaller discography and nice to see a (fairly) recent act ranked. Jason's epiphany hearing The Shins was a story that we can all relate to on our own musical journeys. Kramzer having a similar experience with Belle & Sebastian. Is it too much to wish for a B&S ranking in the near future? Indie is such an empty label to put on music. Does it have to be on an independent label? Is there a sound that is universally recognized as indie? It seems meaningless. And as for an indie scene? The very idea makes my skin crawl. Thanks for refreshing the parts other channels can't reach!

The discussion over #5 is why you guys have the best music review/listing/reflecting channel on KZbin. You all make great insightful points and yet you all disagree. Great stuff!

I agree with Jason. All of the Shins albums make my Top-5 for their respective year; Oh Inverted World and Wincing the Night Away might have been my AotY in other years, but 2001 and 2007 were so strong. Point of Morrow also reaches high, though its year was weaker than the others. Broken Bells debut was my AotY for 2010. My picks: 1. Chutes Too Narrow, my AotY for 2003 2. Wincing the Night Away 3. Oh, Inverted World 4. Point of Morrow 5. Heartworms
Think I’ll listen to some Shins today. Cheers guys!

Heartworms is my favourite Shins album. I think it is an amazing experiment. They are using more synths and pop technology. It shows how James has evolved as a songwriter and musician. I might be a little biased seeing as I got to see them live for the first time on their Australian Heartworms tour. I also really disagree with Kramzer: Cherry Hearts is one of my favourite Shins songs. Also, shoutout to So Now What. Brilliant and underrated album

Kramer is wrong about Sea Legs from Wincing The Night Away. It is an awesome song (I agree with Jason), and also Madonna's Don't Tell Me from Music is an awesome song too!

I always forget that I saw the Shins after Oh Inverted World came out. I live in Portland, and it was not a hard thing to do and the buzz the buzz and I liked the album ok, so I went. Wasn't impressed and thus never really became a fan, though I did like the 3rd album a bit. But sadly, there is another band to add to my list of artists who have passed away who I've seen live (I mentioned it in another comment, but, STP, Ramones, Elliot Smith, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, ZZTop, Van Halen, INXS, David Bowie...)
