The best REAL Drama I have seen recently, no car chases , shoot ups, sex, etc., CGI's HD and all that just a welldon storey and a record of what life was like then. My father was in the Some during WW1 and later on joined the film studios at Ealing , which involved from film makers like Gainsbrough and produced sets with fancy plasterwork and models. The film cameras could not shoot on locations all background had to be in studio. I am coming up to 84 and remember going with my mother to local Regal cinemas seeing films like these , fancy plasterwork in some also done by my Dad. Thank you for posting this and hope for more.

I was born in 1933. We are going to be caught with our trousers down again. Where will we recruit our fighting men from? The Royal Navy now does not have enough men to crew the escort ships for our new aircraft carrier that can't go to sea. With Britain's present and diverse population, hardly any of them would be willing to take up arms against a country where their relations may be living. I am glad I am 91 and not 19.

Really interesting. My friends father worked on the building of the original "Queen Mary" in the 1930s and afterwards onthrough the war on the Clyde. He and his wife lived through the Clydeside Blitz and they emigrated to New Zealand after the war.

I wasn't aware of this film at all. Thanks for sharing. It brings a tear to my eye that all that experience, knowledge, all the sacrifice made for the UK and it was all binned in the name of capitalism in UK. Thatcher destroyed it all and that policy was continued by all governments since. You aint nothing in UK now unless you got money or land, or both. Sorry, rant over.

I'm a Bankie born and bred, watching this movie I could identify several places, most of all the actual footage of the Clydebank Blitz...saw my mum and grandparents home in the film completely destroyed in the bombing The "Holy City", Second Avenue, Bannerman Street, Montrose Street (burned out cars), Kilbowie Road hill all burning...still live in Clydebank today these scenes show the devastation. Have seen still pics many times before but this is the first time I've seen actual footage.

At around the 23 minute mark the ship owner suggests that the builders should help get rid of his old steamers if they want him to buy new ships. That alludes to the 'Scrap and Build' program aka The British Shipping (Assistance) Act, 1935. Simply put that allowed owners to trade in old ships for scrapping if they ordered new in British yards. Good movie, thanks for posting.

The other side of this same coin was the Great Depression in the U.S. This movie is not rooted in fiction, but in general historical facts. When the markets collapsed in 1929 this helped set the stage for lost jobs and lost hope. History will repeat itself. With the U.S. being nearly 30 TRILLION dollars in debt and far too many people losing their incentive to work but instead wanting to rely on the government to care for them we are at the edge of a great abyss. It's a long ways down. Can't happen here? Others in the past have thought and said that.

Who is the 30T owed to ?
@larrywhited3070
@larrywhited3070 19 күн бұрын
@@ScottieMcClue The answer is too complicated for a reasonably accurate reply. The government owes it to itself in various ways and is "borrowed" out of thin air, while some is actually owed to foreign nations. Many links are available to address this. A handy one is entitled: "Who Owns the U.S. National Debt?" In short, the debt is "funny money", and in essence it is money that does not really exist and is only promised. And we know what usually happens to promises made by politicians.

So well told but it all sounds like a rip-off of Forrester's Hornblower. His Horatio navy stories took me to sea as virtual observer aged 13. Ha hem. At 16, decided to join the RN. At the bottom to begin with (as electrician), just as Horny did. And that was happily enjoyed for 11years. Get some sea-time lad, would say the old salts. Ha, my first of five voyages to/from the colonies was at aged 2. When they were landlubber teens.
