What a horrible ending. Yes, this does a remarkable job (especially for 1940) showing what concentration camps were like (funny so many pretended to not know as late as early 1945). However, there is a huge plot hole. Are we really to believe the Nazis will leave the general, his son, and the Pastor's daughter alone after they aided and abetted an escape, and then took a city Nazi official captive at gunpoint? Of course not - they'd all be shot, and probably anybody who heard him speak would be carted off to concentration camps for fear his message might spread. The Pastor's decision to preach wouldn't just put his life at risk, which is noble, but put the lives of numerous others, probably the whole congregation in jeopardy. That's not noble, that's selfish and foolish. While I really enjoy these wartime films, even if they are thinly veiled propaganda, they are rarely the best writing, acting, or production. This was actually quite good until the escape.

It's salutory that, if one were to make a film today about the rise of Trumpism, you could not use an evangelical minister to represent the opposition to it because most evangelicals are full-throated supporters of the movement. Indeed, one could almost say that they are the movement.
