I think the most underrated ship with China is the ChuNi / NiChu. I mean, kiku and yao have been around for a long time, plus they make a nice couple. it's very possible that kiku misses yao and feels sorry for all the damage he did to him in world war ii. and I have some historical evidence on that, first I start with that and then with the hetalia anime. someone asked me to explicate nichu thru wwii-postwar relations and ive prepared my whole life for this research paper. did you want to know entirely too much about zhou enlai? or the hatoyama political dynasty in japan? did you want to learn about chinese and japanese interlocutors at ASEAN councils with sec of state clinton gossiping abt the drama? about the inability of the party apparatus in china to understand the revolving door of japanese prime ministers? i feel like i could teach a course on this relationship but also with the caveat of like... american mediation/sublimation (never forget america mercilessly used the same language against japanese economic power in the 1980s that they use now against the deficit with chinese trade... meanwhile offering japan as an ally and counterweight “check” to the chinese economy... like binch... as if y’all didn’t purposefully sabotage japan with that yellow peril xenophobic shit) i feel like english-speaking fandom reduces nichu to nanjing, diaoyudao/senkaku, and other nationalist propaganda when honestly the relations between the two countries (and also them as nation-states operating as proxies for western postwar interests) are more complex... nuanced... But in the modern timeline, China has become one of the stronger countries, thus Yao is much more confident/arrogant, not afraid of anyone, and seen casually approaching Ivan, talking, sitting with him, etc. (Also, it's interesting that Russia/Ivan is far less whitewashed in Hetalia than other countries, if you treat every major country the same way, they would all be super toxic.)
