What is one way you think mental health care can continue to improve today?
@MohoganyFan

Make it a part of primary care. Too many people are not functioning optimally and that takes a huge toll on the economy. I’m in school to get my NP in MH… MDs should not be allowed to gatekeep mental health treatment.

When those so called Drs force behavioral medicine on patients such as Haldol and Prolixin they should be forced to take the same "medicine" and dose for 6 months and see if that changes their prescribing habits. I guarantee you it would.

@@ting196 COMPLETELY AGREED!!!!! B4 Drs prescribe ANY psych meds, they should try them themselves B4 recommending them.

In psychiatry diagnostics is really shoddy. There are a whole host of undiscovered neurological diseases. People with narcolepsy, enchiphalitis, Klein Levine syndrome, and so on often end up with a psychiatric diagnosis first, then only later (even years later) get a biological diagnosis. First episode psychosis = should equal spinal tap, blood work, mri , and or eeg, otherwise your just leaving things on the table.

Great video! It's important to know the past to understand the present, and psychiatry has quite a historical baggage that is not as known as it should be. I'd love to watch more videos on this format.

Yes !! True. Psychiatry has much baggage. They forgot the Hippocratic Oath. " First, DO NO HARM!". They do not mention harm like: Tardive Dyskinesia, nor Akathisia, nor diabetes, nor huge weight gain, nor tics, spasms, or drug induced Parkinson's. They do not mention benzodiazepines dependence, or bipolar drug side effects ruining liver and kidneys, and damaging vision, eyesight. Psychiatry is pure guesswork, yet they spill out garbage such as a " chemical imbalance. " They work to hide many shortcomings because all that matters is the constant stream of income. Every 4 or 5 years they spill out a bit of contradictatory information to try to stay relevant. They know if the truth was ever to be opened, that the whole house of cards will collapse. Thank you for your contribution to this grave and serious subject. Everyone interested should read about Dr. PETER BREGGIN. A gutsy man that blew the lid off of psychiatric abuse and misinformation.

Very interesting history lesson. Thank you. Also, results were coming in at that time about neuroleptics. These damaging drugs were causing Tardive Dyskinesia, akathisia, death, CNS malfunctions, diabetes, and other horrific outcomes. These first generation neuroleptics led to 2nd generation drugs that are nearly just as harmful. The mental health system was lying about antipsychotics and also bipolar drugs. People were being harmed and experiencing horrendous side affects. Psychiatry has continued to lie, and hide negative facts, so as not to lose business nor credibility. They are liars.

Unfortunately, if we say things like that, we're viewed as crazy, hurt or anti-science, especially if you're neurodivergent or has been harmed by the mental health system. That's one of the reasons why there is no room for discourse, and therefore improvement, even though there are plenty of serious professionals and studies to back up our criticism.

@@isabelacruvinel7604 ..absolutely great comment... until they admit they are espousing the wrong theories, and only conjecture, there will be no true improvements. Only when the patient admits deficient behavior can he then begin to attack his problems...thus psychiatry is actually a mockery of itself.

Hi there, I usually have trouble paying attention to content unless its riveting and informative. I cant say the same with your videos!They are so relevant! I figured it would have been common sense for patients to have basic rights in hospitals but i guess not until then. In a perfect world, i would hope the one-size fits all approach to mental health could be changed. Specifically the over-prescribing of meds. We needs other means of helping people. On a side-note, akithisia is the worst. This is why im coming off my meds slowly but surely. I hate to think of all the lost souls that suffer through it and are not taken seriously. Anyways, my piece. Hope it helps.

I was taking pimozide for two years (2015-2017) for Tourette Syndrome and the effects of emotional flattening (significant) and apathy still remain after 6 years. Could you tell me what happened to me? Does it have a solution or is it permanent?
@A_Psych_Nurse
@A_Psych_Nurse Жыл бұрын
sometimes I think it can be permanent. I think you can try to 'shock' your brain back by challenging it like you would an atrophied muscle (gradually trying to increase the strenght of it here and there). I would wonder what would happen if you did things that historically have elicited a huge emotional response to you, and maybe eventually you could regain your emotional range, if that makes sense.
