I'm a new grad RN and just had an interview at a local prison that ended up feeling more like an orientation than an interview, so I would say I have a good chance at landing the job. I have had one clinical experience working alongside a corrections nurse and it was one of my most impactful clinicals just for how different it was. I could physically see the difference I was making in this vulnerable population's lives and I loved that. I've got my fingers crossed, but there are of course a lot of anxiety over the unknowns as I am just starting out. Your video really helped me paint a better picture of the job so thank you for sharing!

Psych Nurse: I know you may feel safe. But you should think more about your personal safety. Like a woman staff should always be with you when tending to prisoners. Or cameras because should there be an inappropriate conduct claim against you, you will need evidence that nothing happened.

Hi, I'm a female RN at a max, med, and min security men's prison in Kansas😊 i just started a year ago, I was a geriatric long-term care nurse for 5 years prior to going into the prison. I really enjoy correctional nursing! Right now trying to get better at dodging all the manipulation and games prisoners try to play on us.

Just applied for a PRN position back in a women’s prison…took a year off of FT nursing and when thinking about what I want to go back to, it was Corrections hands down! Thanks for sharing! Corrections is a hidden gem.

cccook4826 Do you like correctional nursing ? How many patients do you have in your shift ? Thanks for your information.
@cccook4826
@cccook4826 Ай бұрын
@@gratitudetouniverse777 the amount of patients seen each day varies. For where I worked it depended on which yard you worked, how many inmates/patients had requested to see the nurse. It’s like working in a clinic or urgent care…they have rules and for us if the patients became disrespectful we would have the officer remove them. It didn’t happen a lot for me. I like the autonomy….hate not being able to take my phone in. I’ve not worked with men in years so I can’t speak on how it is with them. A lot of nurse’s prefer men….I prefer working with the women

I have been to detox then rehab. I always found it hypothetical that opiate users are given something for dope sick, then withdrawl But Everyone else has to go cold turkey. You can be having wicked panic attacks or anxiety and they won't give you Ativan to help or zopliclone for insomnia. Like they don't give alcoholics a half shot twice a day? FYI if you are in the evaluation stage of detox, you are watched, like eyes on you every second and your vitals are taken every hour. If you are deemed with like severe alcoholism or benzos, or you keep crashing, they take you to the ER and you have to do pre-detox in a hospital first. Then you are brought back to detox.

Thanks for the video. Glad I found it. I have 7 years in Geropsych. Loved it. However hated the corporate BS that owned the hospital. I am considering a travel nurse position at a medium security prison. My recruiter is concerned about me taking a travel job with no correction experience --- despite their job listing as "no experience necessary" --- however I feel like she is being straight up with me. Did you take this job as a traveler with no previous corrections experience? Thank you

yeah i had no corrections experience and honestly overall it's been my favorite nursing job. The ONE thing it's lacking are the continued relationships/time i'd get to spend w/ my psych patients--you don't really get that in the prison system unfortunately, but other than that it's a pretty fun population for me to work with :)

I am having a hard time developing the mindset that every patient is faking. I see someone with an issue that needs to be addressed, but I'm told anything they present with is solely "drama. "

It's interesting hearing your male perspective in terms of safety. If you are saying you felt a bit unnerved in that young adult male population. I mostly see nursing jobs with male adult offenders and as a 5'5 female, i think it might be daunting .

hah! exactly, i honeslty don't know how a lot of women do it, esp. psych, b/c even after working at the prison i feel like psych is definitely more dangerous. then again, i talked to one of my female coworkers (she's 5'2) and the young males are apparently on their best behavior when she arrives! x D i think a lot of women intelligently use charm to their advantage and if i were female i'd DEFINITELY be doing this while maintaining good boundaries :)

@A_Psych_Nurse interesting! I think you are right ( using charm). My aunt was a prison librarian for over 25 years and had no issues. She treated the prisoners like they were her sons. Anyone using " curse words" in the library had their borrowing privileges temporarily suspended! It was her domain. The men seemed to see her as a mother of sorts. I have got into nursing midlife so am a brand new nurse. I have hears ER nurses say prison nursing is safer. In the Ontario hospitals near me, there are no safeguards , no metal detectors. Rural hospitals often have no security staff. The " energy " of some of these prisons must feel a bit heavy? Sorry to derail the discussion. I am looking forward to future videos.

yeah the place i'm at really isn't that bad, i think most nurses would actually like it (if they could tolerate the occasional slow-pace). And yeah i think ER nursing is up there with psych nursing as far as danger goes, same w/ detox nursing =P@@mizzchuz.6413

i still want to go back to psych, and here in the US you don't need certifications to work in psych. there's a lot of stuff i'm not competent doing though (e.g. IV's, i've never started one after i got my license 😲)

Sir, I have an incredibly horrific disorder that is extremely rare. And I would like to talk to you about it. I am incredibly intelligent and that is not without hubris. I am very self-aware and well rooted in reality. And I would like to have a conversation with you regarding my disability. I have dissociative identity disorder and i'm the real deal. Everyone else is lying and I can tell the truth, the horrific truth

We do a Suboxone detox. It’s 20 days of clonidine 0.1mg Hydroxyzine 50mg and Promethazine 25mg. We only give Ativan for Alcohol Withdrawal and that’s only if their CIWA is 3 or higher. I want to go back to psych. I think your experience in female prison is similar to mine in male prison. I’ll come back later to finish this post.
