What we need is more people like you... literally... Most of us have to wear a fucking mask at work and can't be ourselves... but I think that if there's more people like you and less like the one's with the stupid corporate rules, the world could be better... and I'm not a nurse and I'm not in America, but can totally relate (unfortunately)... Hi sweetie! I am both mentally ill and have a certification in Recovery Support and I have been fighting the system my whole life and still am. I have gone as far as contacting our mayor here where I live among other resources to talk about the abuse in the system and ways to better it. I respect you man for what you do and I am sorry good doctors have to go through all this crap. I am however happy that I am not alone in fighting this bs system now and have much love and respect for you sir.

Yea, I would always talk to the patients as much as possible as soon as they got onto the unit. Because they weren’t familiar with the “no personal information” rule. I got lots of good conversations with them, until they were aware of the “expectations” then I turned into a stalker

So true! I'm not a nurse, but I cant even go to a therapist because of the fear it'll be used agaisnt me in legal things in the future. Once when I was a minor, my doctor referred me to a psychiatrist even though I shared no mental health concerns, and now as an adult, that thing still stained my background. It's still in my record. :/ The sue culture is also bad.

I have spent many times in the hospital for an array of health issues. I don't feel that a nurse doesn't "give 2 shits about me" if she is more focused on ensuring my meds are correct, double checked, recorded properly and my vitals are done like clockwork, but is a bit cold and technical. Than a bubbly nurse who is coming in to fluff my pillows but screws up my meds, is flippant about rules and protocols. You won't die or have an adverse reaction if your pillow isn't fluffed but you can if your meds are screwed up or something is missed because of sloppy recording of your vitals. This isn't a hotel, it is a medical ward.

yeah I agree. I think I was trying to make the point that often you have nurses who are more preoccupied w/ following protocols and rules than they are with connecting with patients. This is obviously a false dichotomy as you can follow rules and protocols while still connecting with patients, but in my experience, nurses who tend to connect very well with patients often are more lax in these other areas.

My 18yr old autistic son went to a hospital for a psychiatric hold...he wasn't a smoker (and was underage, technically) but his nurse gave him nicotine gum. Which annoyed the crap out of me. Any number of scenarios could have led to that, which is why I never said anything. But it was an irritating situation

loved this video and your candor about your frustration - but I know you were made for this world, and caring health care providers sometimes try to fit their round peg selves into the square peg of our current medical system - can't be done, but bringing attention to this is SO important and can maybe smoothe the corners for others??

Imagine being in a place where everybody's life already sucks and where reality is iffy, and then deliberately lying in a way that's not only stupid and unnecessary, but also hurts the people who are trying to help you! All of this BS you are describing, is why I was so incredibly burnt out as a nurse. They (management) seem to jump on the band wagon about stupid minute incidents.....and blow them up.....when real problems exist that need to be addressed, but they totally turn the blind eye to those. I have been a nurse for 17 years. It wasn't like this when I started. I have seen such sad changes. I have been told by patients that we cannot take care of them because we are always on the computer. They put computers in the patient rooms, and we have to scan and chart, etc. etc. in the patients room that we actually cannot just simply take care of the patients. ................. I became a nurse for the right reasons. I LOVE my patients. I very much dislike corporate BS that is ruining nursing. Now I am a huge advocate for safety......many things implemented to try and prevent medication errors, I am all for. However, you know the rest of the story of all the other crap that is placed upon nurses that totally makes no sense. One that just used to blow my mind, was house keeping cannot clean up poop. We sometimes get some explosions. If you are a nurse, you know......nurses clean up the patient and get them tidy.....then call housekeeping and they cannot clean up the other areas because there is poop. So.....ridiculous stuff happens in the hospital that no one realizes just what nurses have to deal with. I got my hand slapped one time over ordering pizza for my patients over the holiday. I think it was Halloween or Thanksgiving. Not sure. I tried to make the most out of being stuck in the hospital during a holiday. Boy oh boy what a piece of pizza for each patient that caused, when they serve kidney failure patients with bananas on their tray. Come on. I digresss.....I could go on and on. I totally feel ya.

100%. all the places i've worked at too prioritize following somewhat arbitrary rules/policies over patient respect (e.g. a nurse could potentially violate one of these rules (at the state hospital, this could have been as simple as allowing a patient to have breakfast even though he didn't wake up in time to go to chow-hall), and the nurse might get written up, but a different nurse might completely disrespect a patient and nothing happens). Talk about bassackwards priorities.

Her parents are driving her cuckoo cuckoo. Every nurse in every specialty can see exactly where behaviors comes from during visits. She knew exactly what she was getting because she spit it out. They watch the other pts, the addicts are master manipulators, stand and beg for anything they can get over and over. Then the rest see it and come.

So I’m a nursing student and currently a tech on a medsurg floor, and sometimes the patients’ family members are one of the hardest parts of the job. In psych do you have much face-to-face interaction with family members or is it usually over the phone like giving updates? One of the reasons I’m interested in becoming a psych nurse is because it seems like interactions with family members is fairly minimal.

my past job was really the only place where i'd have much interaction w/ patient's families (and then obviously working out-patient you'll have a ton of family interaction, but that was almost always positive for me). If you're going to work inpatient, doubtful you'll have much contact w/ family, but the likelihood of this increases the more you work in private settings vs. public (e.g. state hospitals or state-run facilities).

So this sounds like a very frustrating situation that got blown out of proportion for sure, but… completely avoidable if even a basic assessment was done for symptoms when the “lozenge” request was made. You mentioned Tylenol as a PRN, but would you have given it without doing even the most basic pain assessment (0 to 10 how would you rate your pain) and yeah I get it we don’t have a set assessment for nicotine products but I think even just looking at the chart and seeing she has never been given it before should have prompted some inquiry. This is a med error. You could have done more to protect yourself, and the warning was appropriate. Dealing with the parents was punishment enough. You should own some culpability here and I am not seeing that in the video. From one nurse to another I am not here to kick you while you are venting but to offer another POV. That sounds like a super awful experience and I hate you had that. Hopefully you haven’t become complacent in doing basic assessments because that is super rampant in our profession right now. Thanks for the content. It is really helpful and hopefully I am able to return the favor.

Why would the second person's request have any barring on her request? Why didn't you ask her first, " do you mean a nicotine losange or cough drop?" You're a nurse, each patient should be dealt with separately and clarified on what they are asking for. The miscommunication is that you allowed the second patient direct/influence what you thought the first patient was asking for. Mocking the patient for having anxiety. Not cool.
