Theres a big wide world out there to trade with, something we did successfully for over a thousand years, we buy from the EU these days because its a protection racket, our farmers are handed free cash to not grow produce as that would reduce the prices paid for EU muck, its not your fault you were born into an era where Britain was forced to stop production due to membership of this club but we are leaving and if that means protecting our waters as well as our borders then thats what will happen, we don't need this parasitic club and never did before you were born, all of this garbage was forced upon the public by the political class, change is coming, welcome the work it brings.

trident3b joining the EU didn't get us back on our feet. The winter of discontent occurred after the UK joined the common market. Margaret Thatcher got us back on our feet. It has to be said that EU worked better when each country had its own currency. Now its just grinding along.

We don't need sodding great aircraft carriers and overpriced flying scrap, to play in foreign wars. What we do need is a fleet of coastal patrol craft and the will to use them, when necessary, along with dedicated intercept aircraft. Bollocks to the EU and bollocks to the Middle East, as well.

'Just use the pay from those traitorous criminals in the House of lords to pay for a coastal patrol fleet...' - Not just that, get all of the sods from both houses and the civil service out there in boats and pursuing illegal immigrants to clear up some of the utter mess they've created. After that they can get rescinding some of the passports that they've been dishing out like sweets for the past twenty years.

David Adams In 1982 WE DID we're replacing 4 carriers with 2 (and F-35b are overpriced, upgraded sea harriers and drones would have been enough for our needs), While we shouldn't involve ourselves in foreign wars - we are one of the few countries to nut up to help in times of crisis's , and that wont change (historically Labour is More Warlike than the Tories), only question you need to ask is if you want British forces deployed with or without air-cover and helo lift capacity & casevac? but Knocking out some small corvettes with Goalkeepers as coastal patrol & war time fleet air defence would be a great idea

Down here in Sussex, a few weeks ago, I spoke to a commercial fisherman who told me about a Belgian beam trawler that came over recently, switched off all its electrical beacons, then proceeded to hoover up everything it wanted, about half a mile offshore. There was zero chance of it being caught, let alone fined...!

All this is irrelevant to the fact that Fish is over priced and under sold in the UK. All the pelagic fish, mackerel, herring and sardines are sold in France and Spain where fish is a huge element of diet and corespondingly cheap. It is an utter disgrace that UK supermarkets have recently closed their wet fish counters in yet another kick in the teeth to discerning consumers. They would much rather sell their junk food burgers, sausages and rubbish bacon than the most nutricious and tasty food on the planet. I was lucky enough to be born just after WW2 when you could still buy cheap Herrings with soft roes in. I'm trying to say that the fault is not all with foreign fleets. British food retailers and fishermen are bloody greedy and it serves their purposes to sell their catch to a ready european market without trying to develop a home market. This is abundantly clear by the superemarkets latest antics. If and when they do sell fresh fish, it is ridicilously over priced and it's why no one buys it!!!

The thing about sovereignty is that it must be exercise for the benefit of the national citizens that will be affected. I'm afraid that the city dwellers will use the fisheries as a bargaining chip for their own benefits and coastal communities be dammed. Let the Brits fish their waters and sell it to the Europeans and vice versa. I'm afraid these is nothing but a deal to protect some big transnational investors at the expense of the national fishers.

The thing I don't understand, perhaps through naivety, is what exactly we're getting from the EU in these negotiations. So they have their trade agreement, fair enough, but that's productive for us AND them not just for us therefore it makes their position weak. What else are we getting? when they say the EU wouldn't budge, what if we didn't budge? then what? perhaps I'm missing something and I'd welcome somebody to point it out but it seems the EU would be forced to blink first.

@@Taporeee Buckshee, rhymes with 'free' from the Persian root word Bakhshesh, used commonly in many countries in variations. It relates to charitable giving, tipping, gratuities or bribes. In English usage context it means free, without charge, and gets pronounced 'buckshee', which is a play on the rhyming word and meaning 'free', but it isnt to my suprise part of cockney rhyming slang, its coincidence. Apparently the word was adopted into common parlance via the Army, through India and referred to either receiving an extra drink ration or a wound that wasnt too bad but got you off duties. It's used in common parlance though in it's original language context of giving or receiving something for free.

Pretty much agree with lots of the comments, what i get uptight about is people thinking we would be treated any better by the EU if we capitulated. We take back the waters,we take back control and we deal only with the individual countries seperately. We will have to deal with France,Spain,Holland, just get access to European roads. So there is one bargain we need to make,we also need to charge like the French for using the arterial routes, in order to assist in distribution. We need to do so many things, but most of all we need to bury our petty differences, face facts, and work together, or give the remainers fuel and the EU the pleasure,of saying we told you so! For those that don't want that..........Fuck off then!

It all depends on what we are calling British waters. In 1964 the then British government signed away British waters by allowing the signatories of the London Fisheries Convention to fish between the British 12 mile limit and the 6 mile limit. It was under these arrangements that we entered the Common Market. At the time the British government considered everything outside the 12 mile limit to be open to everyone. This was the basis of why we had 2 'Cod Wars' with Iceland, one when the Icelandics extended their fishing waters from 12 miles out to 50 and again when the Icelandics extended their fishing waters out to 200 miles. The 200 mile exclusive zone for fishing was not established until 1975 but by then of course EU fishing boats were fishing to within 6 miles of the British coast and with the British government's agreement. I expect that what are now called British waters extend out to the 200 mile, or median line, limit. This is an area of sea that the British government has never claimed before and to which British fishermen have never had exclusive access. This maybe why it looks like EU boats are catching great quantities of fish in what are now claimed to be British waters. Another reason may be that the catches of foreign owned but British registered and crewed boats are counted as catches made by non British boats. Traditionally catches have been totalled by the where the boat is registered rather than owned. So when these figures are bandied about it needs to be made clear what source material is used to collate the data.

We should manage this: allow some EU fisherman, especially if there's a tit for tat arrangement which benefits our coastal communities: BUT they must fish according to our rules: 1. Fish caught count towards their allocation - NO fish may be thrown back. 2. Electric shock/pulse fishing is out: nets & rod only! 3. We regulate net size....etc..

My country (NL) indeed fishes in UK waters. Perhaps time for the fifth Anglo Dutch war, as some kind of Brexit afterparty

@@91Durktheturk the french will be on your side as they’re part of the EU (french and Spanish fishermen fish in our waters aswell) so they’ll both be on your side just like the fourth Anglo Dutch war.

British territorial waters only extends 3 miles out to sea, and the international waters starts after 12 miles. When the UK takes back it's fishing rights it will only extend 3 miles out not 200 nautical miles also because most of Europe is inside the 230 normal miles you stated. , Non of the western side of the UK waters because of Ireland to the south and east France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, and Norway are within 200 nautical miles and there 230 normal miles would over lap this supposed limit. So you will still have to share the same fishing waters with the EU anyway, buy a map or look at google maps and see how far you can go with this idea. Really Northern ireland and Scotland are the only 2 countries with an opening here to the North East and North but then again scotland might leave the UK so the The UK will be an Island with no territorial fishing waters of 230 miles because it will in some way overlap another European countries 230 mile limit as well, For Your Information, Calais is only 23 miles away from dover and Harwich to Hook van Holland is only 126 miles away how do you intend to stop Dutch fishing in their legal 230 mile limit when in theory they could actually fish another 100 miles inland from the Harwich coastline. Your ideas are as stupid as going fishing in a corn field in Oxford. Actual distance 231 miles. Peterhead in Scotland to Egersund, Norway 293 miles. Quite a lot of overlap there isn't there. Try some distances out for yourselves with this app tjpeiffer.com/crowflies.html and you can do the maths on exactly how much the UK will benefit from this 200 nautical mile or 230 normal miles boundary. If the EU and UK agree on this 200 Nautical mile debacle. Neither will fish in eithers 200 nautical mile limit then. 1- 1 = None. Great for the fish who live there i guess but not so great for the people in Grimsby. Grimsby Uk to Den Helder, Netherlands 205 miles. Oh so close to having your very own fishing area.
