In 1971, entering the final week of the NFL season, all the Baltimore Colts had to do in order to win the AFC East was defeat the New England Patriots, a team that had not won a road game all season, a team that had never won a game against the Colts, and a team that had never even so much as scored a touchdown against the Colts. Sure enough, one of the craziest regular season upsets of all-time happened, and it impacted the playoff picture in a monumental way. This is the story behind the crazy ending to the 1971 NFL season, and how the Miami Dolphins unexpectedly won the AFC East

Why did people think that it was legitimately possible for players to throw games back in 1971 but now people never consider it. 50 years later, players could and do still throw games. I don't understand why it is so hard for people to swallow that today.

Fast forward to today, 1/9/2022. To secure a playoff spot, the Colts (9-7) need to beat the worst team in the NFL, the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-14). Not only did the Colts lose, the Jaguars made them look bad. The Jaguars led 13-3 at halftime and won 26-11. The Colts scored their only touchdown trailing 26-3 with 4:26 remaining in the game. Wentz was sacked 6 times, fumbled once, and threw a pick. Then again, the Colts haven't won in Jacksonville since 2014.

Every season at least one upset like this happens. But even in that context this was an all-time shocker. The Jags were already the league's worst team, who actually played MORE poorly after Meyer was fired. This was a result that should not have been humanly possible, but came true because apparently Wentz really is just that bad.

It was mentioned in the video how sloppy the 1970 Super Bowl was between the Baltimore Colts and the Dallas Cowboys which Baltimore won by a score of 16 to 13 on a Jim O’Brien field goal with five seconds left. The game was so poorly played that it was the only time in Super Bowl history as a player on the losing team got The MVP for the Super Bowl. Chuck Howley linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys.

The Colts and the Rams traded ownership groups after that season and the Colts new GM, Joe Thomas, released or traded off many of the Colts veterans. They toiled in purgatory for three seasons before becoming good again in 1975.

Miss the playoffs being at the end of December and up to mid-January and then the Super Bowl being played before February. Too understand that this was during a 14 game season and not a 16 game season and now 17 game season. Great video and interesting on how that unfolded. Just wish the NFL would kind of go back to 16 game schedule, starting before Labor Day, and Super Bowls in January. This when football was enjoyable to watch and QBs were able to get hit without having a penalty being thrown most of the time.

Patriots fan John Noe here. Yes it was an upset but not really a shocking upset as their have been a lot of shockers. On any given Sunday you can get beat if you do not bring your A game and look past your opponent. I think the Colts at that time looked past the Patriots and lost a TRAP GAME. Never underestimate any opponent no matter what. The person making this video also made one of Bills coach Jim Ringo quitting on the 77 Bills at halftime of an embarrassing loss to the expansion Seahawks by over 40 points. The next week my Patriots were installed as three touchdown favorites at home against these same Bills and lost. Losing a trap game. So these results are not so shocking when you take your opponent lightly and do not bring your A game.

What a coincidence. In 1971, the Colts went into the final week of the season playing against a rookie quarterback who had been picked first overall earlier in the year (Jim Plunkett). That also happened this past week with the Jags and Trevor Lawrence. Main differences, of course, being that the 1971 Colts were a much better team, and the 2021 Jags were a much weaker opponent.

I was at the game (it was really cold), and I thought at the time that the colts were playing for draft position, which was common for many teams. At the time the Browns were a bad team. In 1971 the Chiefs were considered a superior team, and the Dolphins weren't considered a great team.

They pre-determined the playoff schedule because back then, the playoffs were occurring in the middle of the holiday season and the NFL didn't have the clout it would a few years later to secure hotel space in almost every city before the regular season started. By using pre-determined status, they were able to limit how many cities they had to do that at that time. Even when the NFL by the mid-'70s did have the clout to secure hotel space later in the season when fewer teams would be in it, the NFL likely ran into issues then which only went away when the season first had the bye week added and then was pushed back a week in 2001 to where now we are still in the regular season at that point.

Forgot to mention that the Patriots loss to the Dolphins forced them to play in the wildcard card round, were the Titans pulled off a huge upset in what turned out to be Tom Brady’s last carrier game with the Patriots. If the Patriots had beaten the Dolphins, they get the first round bye, Chiefs most likely beat Titans because they did that lager down the road, so the Patriots end up with a different team, could win the Super Bowl like that, ad that could lead to Belichick resigning Brady and continuing the dynasty. This would also mean the Patriots wouldn’t select Mac Jones, somebody who is having a great rookie career.

I am sure that everyone saw by now that Jacksonville defeated Indianapolis - and rather easily. I submit that that was at least as big an upset, given Jacksonville's season. The Colts should hang their head in shame: That cost them the playoffs with that loss to the worst team in football. Perhaps maybe journalists should ask if they threw this game so that they could go home early, hmmm?

BAL would have clinched the East with 1. win/tie 2. MIA loss Also of note: 1971 was the last season that ties did not count towards winning percentage, thus in this instance a BAL loss + MIA tie would give MIA the division since 9-3-2 was effectively 9-3, which would beat out 10-4. Starting in 1972 ties counted for both teams as 1/2 win and 1/2 loss
