Welcome to the full documentary on Marina Abramović, extracted from the previous three part series I made on her.
Within the realms of performance art, Marina Abramović is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated and controversial female artists yet known. Her work has captivated and shocked many for its intensity, its rawness, and its willingness to push the boundaries of human endurance.
Although she began her career as a painter, in time she would turn her attention to performance art in the early 1970s where she would start exploring themes of the body, pain, and trauma. She often put herself in extreme physical and emotional states, testing the limits of what her body and mind could withstand, as well as how the viewing public would interact.
Over the years, Abramović has continued to create challenging and innovative work. She has performed in some of the world's most prestigious museums and galleries, and her work has been featured in numerous films and documentaries and continues to do so to this day.
In this video, we will be taking an intimate look at Abramović's life from her early childhood to the woman she is today. As well discussing her work from the rarely-heard-of to her most infamous, in hopes to understand what drives her to create such extreme and challenging art.
Just how exactly has Marina Abramović become such a complex and fascinating figure? How did she become a pioneer in the field of performance art, and how has her work challenged and inspired audiences for decades?
This is the story and performance art of Marina Abramović.

It might seem strange to some of you that Marina's mother still had so much control over her even in her 20s, but I get it. I had a similar situation with my mother. Some mothers just have a way of making you feel like you're the worst person in the world if you go against their will in any way.

I was working at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam during the Marina Abramović exhibition. It was astounding how many people tried to take pictures of the live performers of Imponderabillia and Luminosity, even after it being asked not to in the e-mail, by Marina herself in a video next to the entrance, us at the top of the stairs AND by the no pictures signs right before entering the halls where the performances took place. I met Marina during the staff opening, she was absolutely wonderful, charming, funny and interessted in our envolvement with the exhibition about her.

Just wanted to say, I love your videos and deeply appreciate the work you do. I have not been able to regularly watch your videos in a while now, but I try to when I see you upload. A couple years ago, I discovered your channel whilst I was house sitting in a rural coastal town. It was the dead of winter, and constantly rainy, with very little to do for the month I was there. I took care of two very old dogs and three lovely cats. I'd wake up and feed the chickens, and travel a good 40 minutes to the nearest shops to get food for the next few days, walking alongside the grey ocean. I'd spend my hours slowly reading A Dance with Dragons, playing the Long Dark, and watching your videos. It was a calm, rather soothing time of my life that I deeply miss. You didn't have a lot of videos back then, so I found that by the end of my time there I had finished them all. I'm very nostalgic for that time. Your videos are wonderful, thanks for occupying my memories so vividly.

That public service announcement made at the end of this episode was brilliant. It was very nearly my exact strategy when forming an opinion of religion, music, sexuality, and most of the tight phylosophical corners in society. A healthy grasp of things that are inone of my business contributes greatly to a peaceful life and a peaceful home and kinder, more gentle existence. I like your style better with each passing installment on your channel. Thank you Pete.

I'm a fan of Marina, but now I know more about her backstory I love her even more. I also grew up with abusive parents - particularly mother. I lived with my maternal grandmother when I was 5-6 years old. She was also very spiritual, and a lot of my spiritual knowledge comes from my mother's side. My mother also encouraged my creativity despite her abuse, and I became an experimental artist in my early 20s :) I even have a blood disease! I am 29, by the way. It's funny how much I have in common with Marina.

Rythm 0 is the template of trauma based mindcontrol without a handler rewriting the blank slate. Abramovich dissociates from her mind and body while remaining conscious. She shifts her perspective. The crowd adjusts to a low energy vibration. The mob mentality. I find her daring curiosity to push limits by her free will very gutsy. It is too bad she choose the dark side. And go against the free will of others. There is no excuse for that.

Except for that photo with a Rothchild in front of a painting of Lucifer, what evidence is there that she "chose the dark side"? To me it seemed she is a very emotional, very empathic person, and the "evil people" (lol) are usually psychopaths/sociopaths, lacking both.

As a young man in my 20s and early 30s, I had very definite opinions when it came to art and music and had felt that performance art, like conceptual art was uninspiring and a waste of time! Then, thinking I was going to a concert, I had the good fortune to see a performance by Laurie Anderson in the 1980s. Blown away, I had a new appreciation for performance art and have become much more open minded when it comes to artists like Abramović. I would just say that satanism or evil is the opposite of creativity and is more associated with destruction than creation and the hatred of such artistic expression is more about the viewer’s inability to understand it.

i owned a music studio in the 90's. i set out to curate a certain sound and wasn't interested in anything else. i would condemn and be indifferent to anything outside my ambitions. well, the musicians broke me. too many came with ideas i couldn't ignore and once i heard their visions i heard true music. sometimes the things i detested i loved more in time. i learned that there is no such a thing as bad music, or bad art - only ideas that manifest. the world is incapable of ugliness except when ignored or unseen.

Marina is over the top outrageous but I Stan her for it. She has most definitely challenged perceptions with her work and still does so. That she is polarizing as she is shows that her work has hit some raw nerves. I do believe that she has most definitely pushed boundaries and has even overstepped the mark on multiple occasions. I personally think that Marina absolutely did and by doing so pushed societal norms that still make people feel uncomfortable to this day. This, to me, is a sign of great art.

Do not excuse her mothers behavior because of military background, treatment of children in those ways continues till this day. Mostly it is consider normal and just a way of properly raising up children, things like mental health and trauma DO NOT exist here. I myself suffered through enough of mental, emotional and physical abuse even if im born around 2000s.. Really despite their background there is no excuses for mother and father to act like that. (and yes my parents were born in ex yugoslavia and yes i do live in one of those countrys) I could go on and on till tomorrow how things like art or self expression are treated here. In short anything that dosent bring money to house despite making you happy is treated like nonsense, being depressed or having trauma or thoughts about ending your own life is your own stupidity and overreacting, meanwhile you are continuously laughed at and mocked. Being different and having critical thinking and thinking for yourself makes you a freak and outcast I know that from my own experience.

THE BAND ERASURE USED THE SLAPPING EACH OTHER ACROSS THE FACE ART SCENE IN THEIR MUSIC VIDEO. ANOTHER MUSICAL INDUSTRY RITUAL WHICH HAD MEANING.

It seems like Marina was subconsciously playing out her mother's abuse in order to heal and transcend.

Sadly, I was raised almost identically to Marina, but my idea of art is Monet, DaVinci or Michelangelo.

Reminds me of a scientific experiment/study where the participants were told to shock another participant for getting wrong answer. The scientists estimated that only about 1% would continue to follow the scientist's protocol/ instructions to push the shock button, even tho they knew it was causing more and more harm to the other each time the dose was increased. They just kept obeying, trusting the scientist. Turns out that the percentage willing to follow directions until level XXX 😮 turned out to be 65%!!! And 100% were willing to incrementally turn the shock up past the point that would kill. Obviously, it wasn't real, but the button pushing participant did not know that. It's become an important study in the field of behavioral science. Welcome to humanity 😂

Way too many advertisements. Long ones too. I got so distracted by "yet another ad" that my annoyance spoiled my enjoyment of this excellent video. So I won't be subscribing for that very reason. Turn them into short ads mate, please? Don't let greed overcome your common sense.
