Thanks for the upload, great video, i have had trials bikes for over 25 years and they all have their issues. At 3.50 you cracked off the cylinder head bolts ant-clockwise but really you should be following a star pattern diametrically opposing each other to avoid warping the head. Keep up the good work, thanks again.

You should measure the end gap near the top of the cylinder where the rings wear the cylinder.

Great video Baz. Anything bike or van related for me. you may show a little tip on doing something I've never thought of. Like fitting the engine when the bikes on it's side. Also didn't know they did time serts with different outside diameters,with the thread size you want on the inside.

Pretty good that in a normal garage environment. I'd like to have seen some rag stuffed into the crankcase mouth and a bit flippant about the use of torque wrenches(tongue in cheek probably) Good video production with appreciated voiceover. Of course we want to see the sump guard larger thread fix!

It’s the same with me ,I fitted a new set of friction plates to my Yamaha dt175,it still has the original Japanese screws fitted,a bit of persuasion with an impact driver fitted with a JIS impact screw head,& two gentle taps & everyone of them came out

That's interesting, I thought TRS had the gearbox oil lubed bearings and then went to sealed bearings. I didn't know they had interim premix lubed bearings, and I didn't know they lubed them with a hole like that either. From what I understand, normally with premix lubed bearings there needs to be vents on the outside of the bearings so there is continual flow of air/oil across the bearing, this makes the engine wider which is undesirable for a trials bike. Without the vents, the airflow (and subsequent oil that would come with it) stagnates and starves the bearings of oil, it looks like they tried using that little hole instead and it seems that it didn't go well. Sealed bearings sounds like a crazy idea but so far they seem to work.

The 2017 did have gearbox lubed mains but changed to premix in 2018.

I think you've done ace with that. Plus it's hard filming and working at the same time. Maybe you could use a nutsert but for an 8mm thread you will have to drill it out to 12mm 😊👍👍 I'm just starting trials riding at 55 as I've just lost my license due to a seizure and it will hopefully keep my hand in and make me a better balanced road rider for when I get it back too. The only thing I feel sorry for you though is you're so near to Lancashire but not in it 😂😂😂

I have a TRS 300 and I think their oil mix recommendation of 1% is not enough oil. I use Blendzall Green Label 60;1. Blendzall runs toward heat, all other types of oil run away from heat. I used it in all my MX bikes and my Speedway bike.

The manufacturer recommends these new sealed bearings. Obviously there was an issue with the old bearings not being adequately lubricated by those galleries, possibly because of krankcase pressure actually forcing the lubrication back into the galleries and away from the bearings. This could be the reason why the new sealed bearings actually seal off the galleries deeming them redundant (pure speculation on my part). Your experience with this bearing issue reinforces my theory that there was indeed an issue. Three sets of bearings on a bike that isn't that old and hasn't been ridden excessively can't be considered to be fair wear and tear. If the bike had been abused and not well maintained there would most certainly have been evidence of wear in the bore and on the rings. The fact that piston and rings are original and show minimal signs of wear endorses my theory.
@SpecialisedMotorcycleTransport

That does make a whole lot of sense to me aswell Laurence.. Are there any other manufacturers that are using a sealed bearing like this?

@@SpecialisedMotorcycleTransport Sorry mate I don't but you asking the question prompted me to Goolie the topic and found a lot of threads on the subject. Trials central especially, with comments on your specific bike and an obviously well known problem and questioning these galleries and that manufacturers like Bultaco, in the past, never had such a system. I know that was a long time ago but at that time (yes I'm a dinosaur) Bultaco were king of the game and renowned for their reliability.
@bananabrooks3836
@bananabrooks3836 4 ай бұрын
That theory does appear sound(wish l'd thought of it 😁but we didn't have the full picture. ) especially looking at the considerable oily residue at the transfer lead in area AND that the big end has also succumbed. The quality of bearing suitability was discussed in last video comments but now appears not to be the issue.
@laurencehastings7473
@laurencehastings7473 4 ай бұрын
@@bananabrooks3836 If the quality of the bearings had been the issue then they would have just changed the spec of the bearings but they have now completely changed the design of the bearings and the method by which it's lubricated. In some forums it has been speculated that these galleries weren't for lubrication but for added ventilation but I can't follow that logic.

For somthing that's not used everyday say like a road bike,trials bikes really are made as cheaply as possible,are quick wear,and are not worth the price new! Saying that I just paid through the nose for a new beta evo 300 😆 I allways run a 50:1 fuel mix,some say bit much but mains get plenty of lube at this,what do you run? Great vid btw👌

Not sure about that.. I believe personally that the engineering is purposed for weight saving and not for reliability so will fail a lot more often than road bikes for instance. I use 70ml oil for every 5l of fuel which I think is about 65/1. Thank you for the nice comment buddy.

Appreciate the video but having raced 2-stroke air cooled (with gallery fed mains) on the track the sealed bearing does go against the grain, a bit counter-intuitive as you say. But you didn't show us both sides of the bearings: do they have rubber seals on both sides (designated 2RS) or just on the inside (1RS) so that oil dribbling down the gallery will feed into the bearing race and maintain lubrication. I can better imagine this working. Something some of us did back in the day was to widen the mouth of the gallery (create a slot) so in theory it might collect more oil. Did it work? Who knows, but it didn't make things worse. That said, these days I'd be more than a bit nervous to take a Dremel to those cases 😲 Please let us know how it goes long term 👍

Yes the bearing are 2rs and fully enclosed and I have been assured by the TRS importer and official spares supplier that they are the new part number issued to this bike and a few other brands. I guess we will see how it goes but so far so good. 😁
@jamesal0
@jamesal0 4 ай бұрын
Hi Guy, you left the dust seals on the bearings so motor now can't feed 2T lubrication up and down the gallery ports and into the ball races. Also the crank dropped into the left hand bearing way too easy. The crank will spin in the bearing inner race and stuff the crank. Normally/sometimes you have to pull the crank into the mains, even when you freeze the crank and warm the bearings. Also using a soft hammer on the crank will knock out of true, and possibly why the previous bearing didn't last.

As I explained in the video The bearings are the superceded ones from the TRS dealer that are meant to stay fully sealed mate. This is the word of Steve Saunders himself. Also when we stripped it again to remedy the gearbox issue the bearing was tight in the casing while at room temperature.
