Podcast is Called : ASN Humans Are Space Orcs , HFY and other stories
--------------
This Story is Classified as HFY or Humanity Feck, Yea , but what does the Mean?
-------------
HFY is a story/series that takes a “human element” in either humanity or an “other” (race/species or object) that exists in a “setting” (future or other world/universe) with varying levels of culture, technology, society and history that help show in some shape or form the potential good or bad for humanity’s race/culture. In These stories Humans are often referred to as Human, Humanity, Deathworlder, Hellwolder in reference to the human planet of origin , Earth. This planet is seen by most of the universe as a place where only death and chaos can survive.
-------------
Taken from the FAQ of the r/HFY subreddit.
Humans Are Space Orcs (HASO) or Humans Are (Fantasy Race) Are used as a guide when writing.
In these Stories we normally View humans like the other races view orcs in a Fantasy Novel. We (Humans) share the same characteristics and personalities as orcs. Humans are normally treated as the outsiders and barbarians. Humans tend to be underestimated as well in these stories. Unlike Humanity Feck Yea , these don't always put a positive spin on humans\humanity sometimes looking at the darker side of human and humanity from the perspective of aliens.

I love the idea in so many of these stories, that magic is more of a hindrance than a help. That people start relying on it more than their own ingenuity.

If you think about it, it is logical. Technology is foremost created to make things easier, and cheaper. But if you have magic, then you already have a way to make things easier and cheaper. At least for those who otherwise would fund the research into technology. That is the thing. Research is expensive. You take essentially one, or more people out of your economy to try to figure something out. They need to eat, but while they research, they can not work. So either the research happens in the (sparse in a preindustrial society) free time, and is glacially slow, or the researchers have to have enough money to live on without doing any productive work. That means usually somebody rich is funding it just on the chance that it will make money later on. But in a world with widespread magic, the rich have access to magic, and won't use that newfangled technological contraption anyway. And the poor can't afford it.

Second Story: Nothing tells us more on how badly your economy and society would shit itself, than to complain that we're out competing you. I love stories like this, where alien nations realize their own people would tear them apart from embargoes faster, than a hail of gunfire, should they piss us off

Also, if they're critically dependent on all those imports for basic things, then they're dependent on all those imports for their military too. If they don't even have their own FTL comms, did they somehow think pony express to their battleships was going to be useful?

I feel like a future like this is more likely than one where humans are basically space orcs. On our own planet we're already not even close to the top of the food chain without our modern weapons. And considering how harsh the universe can be compared to our little planet I expect that if there is other life out there, it's likely "stronger" than us in some way. Economics however? There's dozens if not hundreds of different jobs in economics, and we have people specialising in all of those jobs. I feel like we're pretty good when it comes to economics. :P

The funny thing is, the cutting off of trade between them probably wouldn't destroy the alien culture. There is a good chance that after a bad adjustment period, they would innovate. After all, they do have ftl
@Sanquinity
@Sanquinity Жыл бұрын
@@reclaimerbear6760 Yea, but the issue is public unrest. Everyone suddenly being cut off from all the luxuries and ease of access to goods that they have gotten used to would, as stated, cause riots. The current government likely wouldn't be able to continue for long. And eventually humanity could swoop in with offers of aid, on the condition that they join under humanity as a sub-species of it's federation. The threat is that it's either that, or the species staying as they are now. Free and distinct from humanity, but sharing/freely trading culture and goods.

I warn you this is a controversial opinion: is hard to not being economically dependant on foreign powers even if you are or were a powerful country, I mean, tell that to Russia, doing things wrong for decades up to slightly over a century, mostly becomed a cultural thing makes them so dependant in foreign stuff that kinda hinders them in case that make their relations with western countries "uncanny"

@@elduquecaradura1468 I'm not saying that autarky is preferable or possible. Personally, I think that autarky isn't even sustainable, just look at the economy of Germany in WW2 (which I'm not sure can even be considered as getting close to full autarky as they claimed since they kept importing resources from conquest). But there's a difference between being economically supported by foreign powers, and being dependant on friendly foreign powers, and being dependant on hostile foriegn powers.

Plus there's drones that can do that with way more precision, and with a war economy, we could have drones that can empty 100 rounds with like 80% hit rate reliably We could reasonably get more than 10M tonnes of copper and iron on a fairly short notice, that means ~1M 20kg drones within like a year, how fucked are the mages?

2nd story. That is pretty much how Britain got its empire and the influence that came with it. Trade and diplomacy. Oh, sure there were wars, but those tended to come as a result of their growing economic & political power within a nation or region.

Many of the wars were non-state actors, or local officials, rather than policy, as in S Africa, India. The places taken for strategic reasons were often the result of peace treaties (Gibraltar. Malta. Hong Kong)

Story 2: And that's a lesson why economic dependence is a terribly bad idea. Far too many human leaders have made the same mistake as this Council of Elders has done, becoming reliant on other economies.

Why do all of these stories depict humans as being superior?
@markuhler2664
@markuhler2664 Жыл бұрын
Because that's the point of "Humans F-ck Yeah!!!" stories. The common trope of a lot of science fiction and fantasy is that Vulcans/Elves are smarter & Klingons/Orcs are stronger, that every species is better at something than humans, that we're just average. So on Reddit someone tired of this came up with an interesting proposition. What if we're the badasses of the galaxy? More specifically, what if Earth was to the galaxy as Australia is to Earth? What if Earth was what became known as a death planet? We shouldn't be the top predator on Earth, we have no claws, no size, no strength, etc. Earth has hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and volcanoes. How many species could survive that, much less make it to space flight. Some authors have looked at how flammable oxygen is and wondered if our atmosphere with that would freak aliens out, or if the range of temperatures on Earth would do the same? Remember, it isn't that there aren't planets like or even worse than ours, but on how many this bad could a species prosper? There's some quote that goes like, "You want to wage war with us? We stick needles repeatedly into our skin to make decorations on our bodies, we pierce parts of our body for jewelry, our jaws are too small for our teeth and so we have to rip some of them out. We poison our air and water, we destroy whole ecosystems and hunt animals to extinction! We hung our God on a tree!!! And you want to wage war with us?! "

...it's a cornerstone for the genre?
@gmradio2436
@gmradio2436 Жыл бұрын
The sub genre is HFY. Humanity, Fuck Yeah. It is focused on the conflicts of humanity to become strong. It is a response to fiction that depicts humans as the weakest spices in a setting such as when humans are considered ignorant children. Commonly seen with elves, dwarves, and the ancient or great races.
@Sanquinity
@Sanquinity Жыл бұрын
@@gmradio2436 Now that you mention it...there ARE a lot of stories in media where humanity is weak or average at best. Glad HFY exists. :P I think the genre really started with a bunch of "humans are space orcs" texts, where it was basically just a bunch of humourous "conversations" between a human and an alien, and how aliens might see human activity/mannerisms as weird. (P.M. Seymour did videos on it back then) But it slowly turned into the HFY and HASP genre we have today, where people started writing actual short stories and sometimes entire light novels.
