I have 3 reasons I give for not wearing them. 1. I want to be aware of my surroundings on the street. 2. It subconsciously affects my tempo 3. Escaping in music doesn’t help me be mentally prepared for the battle. Treadmill, different story, there I will wear headphones.

I typically run with headphones in, I listen to an app and say my prayers because I find running very spiritual. I even tried to run with wired ear buds when I was in Afghanistan, but then I realized not good situational awareness even if it was Bagram. I had my ear buds in for all of Chicago, but it was too loud so the crowd gave me noise, for all 26 miles. I run with one in until I hear: To the Colors since I run at a military installation and enjoy the 40 second break

I hear ya Thomas, I ran and won a 5k on Bagram, still can't believe they even permitted that haha. Fortunately we had the rain fire crew surrounding us in the air when I did. Awesome run at Chicago brother. Keep up the superior training and racing.

Each to there own I suppose. I find them quite beneficial to drown out any negative thoughts. I get lost in the music and time seems to go by much quicker when i have them in. Also when things get tough in a race, I say to myself, just push to the end of this song and you'll feel better, very psychological I know but it works for me. I've different playlists depending on the pace I want to hold 💪

I think running with headphones on easy runs but not on hard efforts is a good idea, because on the hard efforts it will help you become mentally stronger for when you can’t wear headphones during a race, but on easy runs they can help make it less boring.

Thanks for the video, very insightful! I have playlist of about 400 songs all at 180BPM, so it functions somewhat like a metronome to keep my cadence at around 180. I only use it on hard training days, never on long runs and absolutely never in races! Also, if you're going to run with earphones, I totally recommend Shokz or some other bone-conducting device, so that you can hear traffic, people, and all the other sounds around you. Above all, stay safe!

I only wear them on the treadmill I find I get very bored on the treadmill or at least the effort feels harder. Only other time I will wear them is if i have a long run and I know or I'm going to be running slow on a easy run it helps me get the distance in without getting bored.

Great perspective Nathan! I’m wearing headphones on every run. It helps me get out of my head about the effort when it gets tough or long. I tend to over analyze and imagine things thing about my body and stride but with headphones I forget about it and just run. For that same reason I race with consistency. What marathon are you training for?

I prefer using headphones on training and on race days. Just a newbie runner and during was previously using an app for training (Runna). It has a “race mode” that checks your pace in real time and automatically gives you feedback when you are running too fast (or too slow) from your target pace.

It's not one or the other. You can get headphones that let you hear your surroundings. But no, I definitely do not want to hear myself breathing, or be distracted by the sound of my shoes (and don't run in heavy traffic)... I'm not an athlete though, so I'm all about enjoying my runs.

A movie form the late 80’s comes to mind to answer your question. Iron Eagles. Where the protagonist has a higher level of focus when listening to music. So that being said I wear headphones at low volume to hear all those things you are talking about well getting the higher focus from listening to music.
