Some twenty years ago an elderly Jeweller who had a shop on the Isle of Wight but who actually came from the Devon/Cornwall border told us of his grandmother, who was sold as a wife at Oakhampton Market, on Dartmoor. The buyer bought the lady home (on the provided halter) and they lived happily for many years, until she died. They lived in a village called Lewtrenchard, where the vicar at the time was one, Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould (who wrote Onward Christian Soldiers). Rev. Baring-Gould was so horrified by the idea that this happy couple had lived into old age together without having paid a church or vicar somewhere to say 'the words' over them, that he refused to bury her at Lewtrenchard. And the poor lady's widower, plus friends, were obliged to carry the coffin, by hand, all the way to Thrushelton, where the obliging vicar was prepared to give her the funeral she deserved - and where her headstone is visible today. She was the last woman ever to be sold at Oakhampton Market.

@angelwhispers20604 жыл бұрын
Depends on where you are willing to move to, to obtain a wife. If pickings are a little thin in Russia which I can't imagine there are with Valkyrie looking Beauties walking around. If you're willing to lower your standards a little, I am absolutely certain you could find a good wife here in America. The best place to find one is a Trump rally. Such women even if they are not beautiful will be more inclined to be faithful, loving and devoted wives. A slightly less pretty woman will be actively aware of that fact and have spent quite a lot of time cultivating other traits which would make her a good wife, if that is what she wants for her life. Another quality to look for is a woman between the ages of 28 and 35. So she's still young enough to have children and a happy family life. But you will not be in competition with much younger men. Or with the idiotic ideology that women should build up their own fortunes and not prioritize home making. Once a woman's biological clock has started to tick it is much easier to convince her that settling down is appropriate, as long as you yourself are a decent catch in personality and business prospects. No woman will take up with a man who is lacking in personality or prospects. In this regard your biggest challenge is simply obtaining employment with an American employer and getting moved over here. Texas, Georgia, Florida, Arizona, Oklahoma, Kansas and Tennessee are the best places. Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas have little to no state income tax and real estate is relatively cheap once you get outside of the major metropolitan areas. Finding a good spot from which to commute to your American job is vital in attracting a wife. If you're not inclined to travel that far Romania, Moldova and if my memory is correct Czechoslovakia (or whatever they call themselves these days) have extremely generous policies for young families.

I was shocked to find woman who lost their husbands were auctioned by the town. She would be awarded to the low bidder for one year. It was a common practice during a time when no other way for a widow to sustain herself. This took place in New England during the 1600 and 1700’s. I discovered this information while exploring old family records from that time period. It was nothing I had ever read while in school in New England.

Isn’t a dowry basically selling a woman too? As is a “bride price” in various cultures.
@BusyAngel99995 жыл бұрын
Robo Tech no, it’s a safety blanket for the woman
@asadb19905 жыл бұрын
buut on the flip side there is the bride price often asked by the bride's father which can be a huge burden on the groom. and a lot of times that money is not given to the bride.
@BusyAngel99995 жыл бұрын
Phantom Warrior that's why it's important to discuss the terms between the bride and groom. People don't plan and just jump in. Women back in the day got the worst of it because they couldn't support themselves and their children especially if the man just left or divorced them. Families taking dowry instead of the bride isn't right as well. The dowry is for the woman but if she decides to give it to her family and if her family is good then she will still have something. If the groom or his family can't afford the dowry then simply they should avoid marriage until he can fulfill this obligation or try for someone else. History has had lots of women and children left without a provider, home or chance to survive. So systems like this are ideally used to prevent such outcomes
@asadb19905 жыл бұрын
@@BusyAngel9999 agreed the terms of the marriage should be hammered out. in islam there is a set amount of money called haq mehr (currently around $50k) which a husband has to give directly to his wife at the time of signing the marriage papers. it shows husband is capable enough to support his wife. and for the wife its insurance. that money is only for the wife. and in our religion (but not always culture) dowry is not accepted and instead bride and groom family need to work together to have fair share of wedding costs.
@BusyAngel99995 жыл бұрын
Phantom Warrior those are very modern examples. Mehr can be any amount, it just has to be set by the bride rather than her family. But culture is so strong people forget actual religious rules. Families in actuality shouldn't be asking exhorbant amounts for dowry. And definitely if you want a big wedding both parties should pay. 50k is crazy wow but if you can afford it why not I guess

RE:: the medieval impotence trial. Many of the medieval marriage laws, including Gratian, the examination of a man who was claimed to be impotent, require the man to be examined by women of the community (including local prostitutes, and sometimes midwives) as well as the wife. If he could get it up with others but not with her, it was generally considered to be a personal problem and there was no divorce. If he couldn't get it up at all, it was granted, on the grounds that marriage was for procreation, and if he genuinely couldn't, it was null. Must be noted however that once divorced, neither party could remarry until the other was dead. This was not the case with annulment however, and is the reason why so many church courts were crammed with people trying to prove consanguinity or other impediments that would have made the marriage invalid. Also worth noting- most of the wife-selling occurred in England, after Henry VIII split from the Roman church. Henry's marriage laws were apparently only for him, but church law shortly relaxed it's hold on secular marriage laws, and no longer held to a medieval model.
@andrewjohnson67163 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing this great information. “Impotence Trials” also have a part in the secret history of LGBT individuals. Since marriage was for the purpose of procreation the only thing that mattered was whether the man could effectively “get it up” with a woman.

Furthermore, it was quite common for women to buy, own, and sell slaves both male and female throughout much of the ancient world and, yes, in the American South. So... not sorry, you're just plain wrong. As is slavery, as is buying or selling a person in general, unless (why would you, but it would not violate fundamental principles) one chose willingly to sell oneself.

There were of course different customs in different regions. It happened quite often with somebody got sick or had a bad harvest, that children, the wife or all of them including the man were sold or sold themselves to become serfs or "Leibeigene" as it was called in germany. The fate of serfs were different even in different regions in germany - in some places they were nearly slaves without the right to own more than their clothes, no right to leave the land of the owner and they could be sold to another landowner, too. Often the serfs had no right to marry and have children sometimes they needed the ok of the landowner. Peasants were a level up. People of own right who owned a small piece of land or rented it from somebody. Then craftsmen were organized mostly in guilds who had kind of internal jurisdiction and protection mechanisms. But yes, falling down the ladder and end up as a serf or kind of slave was possible. The landowner had some duty to keep them feeded and with cloth and roof but even that was not always guaranteed. People who fled from their owner and made it into a city were off the hook. "City air makes free" it said. But often it was just the freedom to die from starvation. Its not the whole story of middle age and early modern times society. There were vagrants f.e., kind of landless hirelings who moved around the lands and sometimes were like locusts and despised. OK. Your Item is more about a kind of method of divorce. Also the idea of a wife being property of the husband was not the practice all over europe. In wide areas it was custom that, when the husband was off for some warfare as a knight or such, the wife took his place in organizing the farm or fiefdom and even had the function as a judge in low cases. Including sentence somebody for some whipping or decide in simple property fights. In scandinavia it was even common, when the husband came back from viking with not enough loot, the wife kicked him out and chose a new husband. Depending on whose parents handed down the land or what ever.

@Today I Found Out: Its not entirely true that divorces as we know them is a modern thing. In the Viking age of Scandinavia it was easy to get a divorce, and the majority of the divorces where demanded by the women. The woman could demand a divorce from her husband for many reasons, here are a few. 1. She had the right to a divorce if her husband was violent towards her, or had stroked her a total of 3 times. 2. A sudden poverty in the husbands family. 3. If the husband hadn't slept with her in 3 years, or otherwise failed to fulfill his marriage obligations.

@tixeright91205 жыл бұрын
I never knew about this before, but after your examination of it, I can't say I can mock this practice as barbaric. In wife-auctioning it seems that British commoners found an affordable, amiable, recordable, & public custom to handle the sometimes absolutely necessary practice of divorce only to one day have the Crown Government eventually crack down on the anarchical practice because it would mean that judges and attorneys and jailers would not make great fortunes performing their respective vocations & duties by perpetually fleecing the community both in exorbitant taxes and in fees, and potentially indenturing those who could not pay it to a life-time of service either in workhouses or some far-flung colonial frontier. I actually think what the commoners developed was a very libertarian, & democratic, & intuitive custom to dissolve a government promoted relationship structure which has so frequently run counter to all of those humanistic values in a society that often ran at odds with the progress of liberty. (Which is way every victory for liberty was achieved by fighting for it, or at least facing off against those who would fight to deny it.)
