Trumpet soloist Ben Gunnarson performing his role in the Bluecoats 2016 world championship-winning production, "Down Side Up" at the encore of the Drum Corps International World Championship Finals, with additional footage from DCI finals week rehearsal at Indiana Wesleyan University.
I compiled both videos into one so I could capture as much of what was happening as possible. What an awesome drum corps career... 2013, '14, '15, and 16' will be some of the most memorable summers of my life. I'm so lucky to have aged-out with this incredible show! All comments are welcome.

Ben, you are why i auditioned for drum corps. Your drive and spirit pushed me to audition for the '17 season. Now I'm spending my rookie year with Guardians. Thank you for being an inspiration to young musicians everywhere, you have no clue the huge effect you have on the music world as a whole.

Revisiting this head cam after three years gives me a special type of sweet and sour fuzz. Downside Up was my introduction to the amazing world of drum corps, especially this video amongst the collection of many others. Hearing the ballad moved me beyond belief. As an eighth grade, I thought that I’d never have the opportunity to march drum corps because I’m a clarinet player. Recently, I joined my first corps as a junior on baritone and looking back at this gave me hope for a bigger future in drum corps. I can’t believe how far I’ve come, and I’d like to give some credit to this. Thank you to all the performers out there that have overtaken me, it has been the utmost pleasure to shape who I am through you

Damn. Lol I fully wasn't expecting to be yanked back in time like that. That was ME in the early 2000's. I've not found anything in life yet that compares to crushing like that in front of so many people. The teamwork, the skill, the talent, the hard work, the time, all of it came flooding back to me watching this. Woof, my eyes got wet and it was startling to feel those things again, because as I said I had forgotten lol Especially getting to flex and scream like that as we did. The dream of so many trumpet players that only a handful get to experience. Ugh Thanks for that trip. 😊 I needed that.

This is so awesome to watch. I'm 13 and I want to audition for drum corps when I'm older because I have discovered the blue coats. My school lets 8th graders march up in our marching if they are good enough. ( I had to audition.) I was super lucky to have made it in and it lit a flame in my heart. I love to play trumpet, and I practice for hours every day. its practically in my blood, ( my mother, father, and sister all play/d trumpet) and I was always jealous of my sister because she was so good. she was the main soloist at our school and was considered a legend ( she was GOOD.) I was always just seen as her little sister, ( until she quit.) this video has inspired me to be part of the blue coats when I'm older, loved the video your awesome! Edit: heyo guys it’s been awhile. Dreams still going good, at the moment I’m seventeen and heading into my senior year. I’m mostly focused on getting into music school at the moment for music education and trumpet performance, but I’m also back in the swing of marching since band is back. (Stupid COVID) my plans to audition are still there but will probably not be put into place untill Next year because I’m just too busy to go to audition for drum core this year and have plans for next summer. Buttttt after next summer when I’ve got into a good collage I’m for sure going to audition. I even have a few friends who want to come along as well. That’s the plan for now. :)

I will never forget being in front of field 2 for this show at semis, and having significantly worse seats for the finals, so standing on one of the second floor balconies to watch it all over again. The wave of energy and excitement that comes over me every time I watch this show is almost unrivaled. That’s all thanks to the performers like you who poured your blood, sweat, tears, and every breath of air in your lungs into making this such an iconic moment in DCI history.

I occasionally come back to watch this video, I remember going to a DCI show back in highschool and this show was my first experience to DCI. I really wanted to get bettter and join a DCI band myself, but unfortunately, that dream is long gone. Due to complications of my highschool and other parts of my life, I'll unfortunately never be able to experience the joy and fun of being a part of a DCI level band. This video is probably the closest I could ever get to feeling what it's like. 7 years later, thanks for the awesome performance, Ben.

I have never been one to look at the same thing this much, you are absolutely amazing and when you aged out I about cried. There’s no one better then you are and you are my favorite player ever. Because of you I bought a new professional instrument and I am taking more things seriously. It may not seem like you did much but in my book you’re a hero for a good reason. I hope you understand what the reason I’m talking about is. Your future is very bright my friend and I can’t wait to see what you make of your talent. Best of luck to you with much love! Theyre both in 2nd. Go down chromatically and you'll find G in 4th position. E can be played in 7th but its out of tune and not reliable so a trigger should be used.
