@@Vazcular While I don't think that slavery was a main cause for the defense in the Alamo, that argument is very flawed for a variety of reasons. Looking at the Civil War for instance, though most southerners did not own slaves, almost all fought to preserve slavery. This was for many reasons which included that it had become almost a way of life. They also knew southern economy ran off the 4 million slaves on the south keeping the south thriving. All but one Declaration of Secession from the 11 seceded states declared slavery the main reason for secession. So while people don't own slaves, it doesnt mean they wont want to keep or expand on slavery.

I grew up in texas few miles from alamo..still live here.....this city was once in the hollywood highlights..movies .sitcoms..films..drag racing were once popular..not anymore..its become sort of a forgotten little gem..i love it.....there a u.s. state park just south of texas called espada...lots of history there..and i have found countless history items buried there....i now have 3 boys and they love that park..it spans about 2-3 miles long alobg san antonio river and cuddles 4 1700s spanish missions

@@panderson9561 Alamo Dragway, just West of Highway 16, on the South side of town. If you turn East, instead, you'll end up at the Toyota Plant. I'm not sure when they stopped racing there. I went to the Nationals there in '87 or '88. The track and the bleachers were still intact about 15 years ago, then slowly got overtaken by development to support Toyota and a campus for Texas A&M University built on that side of San Antonio. I know an Anderson that did some racing there. He also did some of the announcing over the PA system.

It is my belief after reading countless numbers of books on that battle that Crockett and 6 other defenders surrendered after the Alamo was overrun and they had no means left to fight. Then Santa Ana had them slaughtered in front of him. Someday, I hope they open that sealed box in that San Antonio church alleged to contain the remains of Crockett, Bowie and Travis and DNA the remains and give them a proper burial.

The jokes on you for being ignorant of history. Santa Ana bombarded the Alamo day and night, not allowing the defenders any opportunity to sleep. The day of the early morning assault, Ana stopped the bombardment and the defenders slept for the first time in weeks. Ana's attack caught these men asleep and many were bayoneted in their beds. Ana's attack achieved total surprised and quickly overwhelmed the defenders. Meanwhile, Ana's cavalry swept up and killed all those who tried to flee, including Davy Crockett. It was a excellent plan that almost worked to perfection. The down side of the attack was that most of the heavy Mexican casualties were caused by friendly fire.

I have been to the Alamo about 4 times for business or travel. Each time I learn something new. No, the cellar was dug about 5 or so years ago. It is a storage for the gift store. I have been to Mexico City and visited Chapultepec. There is a small room with a display case of 2 long guns, 1 pistol, the flag of the New Orleans Blues, and a lance pennant. The applets of Santa Anna and his dueling pistols. Beside the display case is a small cannon, probably a 2lb. on a wood, naval type carriage. At the end of the room is the original 1834 Mexican Constitution. Nothing else. The room has a sign in English and Spanish. It only said "Alamo"

The revolution began to regain the rights guaranteed as a province by the Mexican Constitution of 1824 that Santa Anna abolished when he proclaimed himself dictator. The provinces of Zacatacas and Yucatan also revolted for the same reason. Later Texians declared for republic. In his letter Travis said he would die like an American, meaning he would die for liberty. Texians in the Alamo were unaware that Texas had declared itself a republic since they were under siege at the time and very little mail got through , so they were still fighting to get back their rights under Mexican law. Nice try.

Many of the Mexican soldiers who fought at the Alamo were cam volunteers. They did not know Crockett. Santa Anna did not know him either, he only gave authorization to the Mexican army to start the looting.

Yes. When I was in the military, and throughout history, "to the victor goes the spoils". It not uncommon to pick up "trinkets", but in light of modern trip wires and explosives, I would advise against it these days. I was military Intel, and we often took items to learn about the enemy. It was often out of respect, to let the opposing side to know the fate of their soldiers. Personal effects are sometimes returned to the family, but not often. Depends on who you are fighting.

Technically yes it was part of Mexico, but it was a rebellious province that wanted independence from Mexico so Santa Ana sent in the army to put it down by all means necessary. Similar to the 13 American colonies versus the English 40 years earlier. Many Americans from the North and East had emigrated to Texas so the general public in the United States leaned heavily to support Texan independence even if the US Government wasn’t officially involved. That’s why so many US volunteers came to support Texas. 9 years later the fledgling Republic of Texas joined the US family and the rest is history.

Travis disobeyed his orders to vacate the position, effectively signing the death warrant of all 250 men under his command. Gen. Santa Anna should've bypassed the position, leaving 500 men to hold Travis in place. Instead, he conducted formal siege operations, and then foolishly ordered a full-scale assault on a heavily fortified outpost. The Alamo is a monument to the vainglorious egos of both commanders.

He was specifically over taxing, he would change laws without telling anglos so that when the law were broken they can arrest them. He would make agreements then break them. The angles purpose of joining Texas in mexico was to help Mexico. Stephen f Austin like his dad Moses Austin, spent their life trying to help Mexico succeed and become a great nation. Santa Anna arrested Stephen f Austin who was going to meet with him, and that was pretty much the last straw. Also Texas was not the only part of Mexico that revolted during Santa Annas time. Davy Crockett did not die in the Alamo. He surrendered along w his men. The battle lasted 40 minutes. What these brave Mexican soldiers accomplished by attacking in the open, making their way to the walls of the Alamo under heavy rifle and cannon fire and defeating the cowards that hid behind towering walls was nothing less than heroic. Why are they so brave, it is more foolishness by Santa Anna ordering them to attack against fixed positions. The Texans were cowards for hiding behind walls, that had been military strategy for over 3,000 years. My father owned some fenced off land in California, there was nothing on it but an old wooden shack. A homeless man approached my dad and convinced him that it would be a good idea to let him live there and he would take care of his land for him. My dad being a good guy agreed. My dad unlocked the gate for him.He took care of his land alright! Three months later when my father returned to his land he discovered that the homeless man had established a community there and had all of his friends living there now. He told my father that it was their place now and he was not wanted there just before they physically attacked him. My father was able to kick them off his property, thank God! Mexico wanted the Americans and Europeans to come in so they could essentially act as a meat wall between themselves and the Native Americans. Many of the Tejanos who fought for Texas against Mexico were not only Mexican citizens but also former Mexican politicians and military. Lorenzo de Zavala even helped draft the Mexican Constitution of 1824. NOT SQUATTERS!!! 6. Some of the Native Americans either helped the Texians or agreed not to side with Mexico. You know the people who helped Spain steal their land and then imported a bunch of immigrants to not only hold it but to keep them from feeling the repercussions. 7. Most Texians actually supported Santa Anna’s presidency initially seeing as how he promised to uphold the 1824 constitution. 8. Most immigrants, who were there legally had every intention of becoming good law abiding Mexican citizens and were. If Santa Anna hadn’t been a notorious opportunistic flip flopper, set himself up as dictator, scrapped the 1824 constitution, and started slaughtering his own citizens maybe he wouldn’t have lost Texas. What a bunch of nonsense! Willliam Travis was a young officer who didn't know much about his command. He committed suicide when he was overwhelmed by the Mexican Army. David Crockett along with approximately 65 men were making an attempt at escape when Crockett was captured and brought before Santa Ana and executed. Crockett told an Arkansas reporter that he would deliver Santa Ana's head to Washington soon. (karma's a bitch). Crockett owned 6 slaves although he was somewhat against slavery. It was for that reason he was voted out of congress by slave owners. He then had ulterior motives, in that,should Texas become a stand alone Republic he wanted to become its president. Travis had eyes for the same reason. As far as Houston ("The Big Drunk" as the Cherokees called him) was concerned instead of reinforcing the Alamo he did nothing simply because of his disdain for Travis who had political notions. He loved opium and was big on alcohol hence, The Big Drunk! In San Jacinto, he was flat drunk and high that a Lieutenant of him army took over to defeat Santa Ana. Approximately 300 Mexican soldiers were lost in the battle of the Alamo not because of the defenders but mostly because they were shot by friendly fire. Note that the defenders of the Alamo were not trained soldiers. They were untrained conscripts and settlers looking for land to plant their roots. They were easily accommodated by being promised acreage and money to fight, that is of course, if they survived. What is concerning are the myths behind the Alamo composed by white historians to soothe the conscience of the "Texians" of sort. Why would any self-respecting white man want to "Remember the Alamo" when the true history of the Alamo is hidden from them. What is amazing is the propaganda spewed today and still absorbed by racists as fact. The Alamo being of no strategic value and the ensuing mistakes made by the powers that were was the cause of its demise. There is more to this story that should be considered in discussing, debating and arguing it. Those who are dead set in their beliefs of the myths surrounding the Alamo are encouraged to do their research to set the record straight for themselves with this historical event.

There were 253 Alamo defenders, over 100 of them tried to escape the battle by running out of the east side of the Alamo compound. They were killed in moments by Gen. Sesma's lancers. Never heard it explained that way before, and I don’t think they would have stayed there behind those walls that long just to hide under covers and kill themselves, plus Travis was to ornery to do that. They knew they were out numbered big time.What I don’t understand is that in 1835- 1836 America was still very young, why they wanted to go west like from Tennessee and Kentucky blows my mind,they had what they needed right there. I’m 33 miles from David Crockett’s 2nd home place and have been there 4 times. Still beautiful with rolling hills and lots of undeveloped land, but I guess they had to go.

They were NOT out numbered big time: 1,400 Mexican troops against 253 well protected defenders, behind FIVE foot walls. And they still lost! Ronnie, they left Tn. & Ky., because the land there was not cheap, and Mexican land was!

Roger Borroel Hello again. Over the years I’ve heard so many different accounts of how many were in the Mexican Army. Just saying. I’m 57 and heard things that was up to 4000 troops even going back to The school days. I keep a open mind on things like this, and I’m interested in your thoughts on this. Some years ago I seen on a History Channel about how fast the Mexican Army covered lots of ground in the winter time, the Archaeologist found uniform buttons, bullets ,etc. It’s been about 10 years since I seen that.Where do you get all your info from? Keep talking to me, I want to here what you know.

At the time of the battle, there were only 2,300 troops in the town, and only 1,400 were used in the attack. The rest of the army came AFTER the battle!
