Fun fact, not only did the Inquisition bring the Grey Knights, they also brought the Red Hunters. For those who don't know, the Red Hunters are a chapter of Space Marines who specifically work for the Inquisition, but unlike the Grey Knights or Deathwatch, they aren't associated with any specific ordo and are otherwise a normal chapter in terms of capabilities and such. They are who the inquisition gets when they need Astartes in general for whatever given reason. Really the only unique thing about them is the fact that due to working for the Inquisition, their memebers undergo regular memory wipes to keep the Inquisitions' activities secret. So basically the Inquisition looked at the situation and went, you know, in addition to bringing the "Spacer" Marines, lets also bring our normal Space Marines for good measure

While the General commander, ( who name I can not remember the name of), was one of those high born general who never step foot on Vraks, who did more work getting the job as commander than the siege work itself. It should be noted that the Red Scorpions taskforce was just 96 space marines, 3 dreadnoughts and some armour support who were already heading back from a different mission. In the process of opening a breach via a drop assault to deploy a teleport homer, a terminator teleport assault and a strike force coming across no man's land, and then holding out for the Krieg and titans to arrive they lost sixty two space marines and a dreadnought, plus their commander was severly injured. I'd say its quite reasonable that they then left given there was barely a third of what turned up after all that

If Vraks ran out of their timetable, they would be reduced in priority for receiving supplies and replacement troops. During those first few years they were top priority and things would be replaced immediately. After the time ran out, supplies would still trickle in but it wouldn't be the flood it was for the first decade. And also, Julka would also be disgraced and replaced by a different commanding officer, which in the case of Vraks was actually a good thing because Julka was an incompetent commander who was given his rank because of family connections and thought he could effectively command a solar system away, and is replaced by an actually competent commander.

Actually Inquisition have always been involved in this war. It was under the purview of Ordo Hereticus (anything heretical in the Church falls into their ballpark) that the war have been conducted. However, with the introduction of so many actual Chaos space marines, Ordo Malleus and the Grey Knight decided that this is far too important for those amateurs (Hereticus) to handle. Enter Stage Right Lord Inquisitor Hector Rex of Ordo Malleus.

Also in the first phases the Inquisition let non-inquisition commanders do most of the work because apart from the original cause this was more or less standard war work. One of my favorite details not mentioned about the seige at this point in the timeline is the "big push" which also includes the battle of mortuary ridge. (I think, I know this definitely happend before the chaos astartes showed up) The best part is that prior to the offensive, the death korps bombarded the vraxian defence line for 4 days straight non stop with all 70,000 artillery guns, approximately 10 million or so shells were fired in 4 days which is x10 more than what was fired at the Germans during the battle of the somme in 1 week. Kreig artillery crews were rotated out every 30 minutes and were instructed to keep their mouths open, or scream as loud as possible to equalise the pressure so their eardrums didn't burst. About 14 million shells were needed for the push with the additional 4 million or so needed for further strikes, alongside all the spare gun barrels and required storage bunkers needing construction, the prep work for this took so long that the vraxians actually thaught all the activity was the guard leaving vraks, until the second defence lines comms went dead and 80% of it and its defenders were wiped off the map. The kreigers faced surviving resistance in some areas but in others were completely unaposed, then the chaos forces showed up and ruined it all

I spent 8 years as an Army Ranger. While I obviously never saw the carnage that the Army Rangers saw during “D day” I can say “Saving private Ryan”is the most accurate “War” movie I have ever seen.

It was only a strike force of Red Scorpions. They literally had a single Strike force, about 100 marines, and a Strike cruisers helping at first. They held a crucial breach in the fortress walls after krieg blew it sky high from underground. The red Scorpions took HUGE loses, only one one the initial strike team survived until the terminators managed to teleport in and save their lives. Edit: To say the Red Scorpions came, did very little, and just left, is insulting to the absolute losses and gains they made where the Death Korps couldn't for years, they broke the third defensive line. The Red Scorpions won Vraks for the Imperium. You can't convince me otherwise.

This is always the problem I have when discussing Chaos getting involved, you have to be specific. It's not like entire Chaos Space Marines legions that show up- usually its just a war band that can range from a few dozen marines, to a few hundred depending on how spicy the author or GW feels that day. I think of the War bands that showed up to Vraks, the Khorne and Nurgle warbands were the most numerous, and the number of Iron Warriors were on the smaller scale of things. But the main bulk of the forces were still mortal cultists, both the Cardinals initial troops and the cultists brought along by the war bands.
