Hi, I just set it up today. Using the metabones bmpcc4k ultra to Nikon speedbooster. Works beautifully and while the manual aperture is a little tough to get used to by using the adapter instead of the lens (The lens is fully electronic/auto aperture) once I got it set up it is working perfectly.

Hi Nolan, I just found your channel in my recommendations feed and it's nice to see someone using exactly the same equipment as I, so I feel approached 😃 Since the stabilization on the lens doesn't work (even on a Canon body it didn't work fine at all), what I do is turn on the electronic stabilization on the G85. I have never noticed any kind of weird distortions or strange artefacts. With both ibis and electronic stabilization, at 60 fps and later using Premiere's warp stabilizer, the result is more than satisfactory. You just got a new subscriber!

I actually just got this combo - I went on eBay for about a week bidding on used ones in 'Like New' condition with my max bid set to $210 and got one for $225. Pretty stoked. I've been emailing Viltrox about official support - this lens is great for adaptation as it can be used on Panasonic as an affordable alternative to the 12-35mm f2.8 where you exchange IS for an f2 exposure wise that acts like a full frame f2.8 if I'm not mistaken in terms of DOF(or an f4 either way it's better than f5.6) Fuji or Sony apsc or full frame super35 mode which is awesome. The OOF area is super creamy and used in conjunction with the Panasonic x5 ibis(I have a GX85) it's outstanding. Even without the lens support back button focus works reasonably well - you should try it out if you haven't. Have you made any considerations on a 70-200mm f2.8 yet? There's the obvious Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 HSM or OS, the newer Sigma 50-100mm f2, the outlier Tokina 50-135mm f2.8, a native 35-100 or 40-150 2.8, or you could go old school with a Konica 35-100mm f2.8(I've been looking at others like a Tamron 35-90mm f4 non variable aperture as well).

Nolan Gunn I have the 16mm 1.4, I’d go for a 24 or 35mm 1.8 because they are cheaper and you’d only use them to get better low light if you really need it. Other then needing better low light, the Sigma 17-50 with color a lot at 2.0 with the speed booster.

Hey man, have watched enough to know that you really know your stuff, figured you're the one to ask: Trying to use this lens with the Viltrox ef-m2 II on my Blackmagic 4k... Ouff, can't get neither the Aperture to show nor the image stabilizer to work... Any ideas? I don't get the viltrox to clearly click/lock on to the sigma lens, only multiple small "clicks" while turning it, and I just kind of turn it until it feels firmly in place. Have all the newest firmwares also.
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn Жыл бұрын
Hey! I really appreciate those words. One thing about the viltrox that's really weird is if you hit the little side lever (it's a little black tab on the side of the adapter that goes up and down) it disables the ability to use the aperture on the camera. The only way I've found to reset it is to turn the camera off and back on. If that's not it I would start by trying other lenses on the viltrox and see if they work. Try to isolate the lens or the adapter as the issue first. See if you can find a canon rebel body you can test the 17-50 on and make sure it works. If it does, then you know either the adapter or camera are faulty. Sorry i can't be of more help! Keep me posted.

At this point, I think full frame is the future. The GH6 will effect my decision quite a bit. If the GH6 has amazing lowlight and autofocus I would consider sticking with mft. But at this point I would like to see a Sony A74 with some a7siii features. The Panasonic S1 has a lot of flaws that are hard to sell me on. Yes, it works! It's not as good as the G85's Ibis, but it takes the edge off of my GH4. Note though that they both do NOT work together. You have to choose lens OR body stabilization. I guess it depends what you want for a lens. The 12-35 is weather sealed and smaller. You will get a little better depth of field with the viltrox and sigma. The 12-35 is definitely sharper from the comparisons I've seen AND it has the dual IS capabilities for ridiculously smooth video. What are you shooting?

How do you find the sharpness with this on the G85? This sigma line is known for not being super sharp, with the addition of the speed booster I worry about quality issues... Was thinking the Viltrox + Canon 16-35 L but if this is viable I would rather save some money. Thanks
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 4 жыл бұрын
I found that it is decently sharp. You're right that the 16-35 would definitely be sharper though. I only have my sample footage to show for the sharpness. But if you really want a sharp lens then the Canon or a newer sigma art would be a great option 👍🏼

Before you assume that, if you use the viltrox's aperture switch, it disables the cameras until you restart. So just in case you can't adjust it, try restarting your camera. If that doesn't work, I would reach out to viltrox. Hope this helps!

@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 4 жыл бұрын
No. You would get serious vignetting as the 17-50 is Apsc and the viltrox would make it close to full-frame. I would pick up some full frame glass or stick with eos-m Apsc lenses if you need autofocus.

@@ajithjohny4345, so the 17-50 f/2.8 will work natively on the M50 if you have Canon's EF to EF-M adapter but will not run at f/2.0. If you want to use a focal reducing adapter with the M50 then you will need to look at a full frame lens like the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. They can be had for around 500 to 600 USD used IIRC. In either case you must use a full frame lens in order to use a focal reducer with an APS-C sized sensor like what is in the Canon M50. The m43 sensor in the Panasonic cameras is smaller than APS-C which is why it can use a focal reducer with EF-S glass.

Great video and I agree with basically all of that, but when calculating the 35mm equivalent it would be f2.8 (iris aperture) , ☓. 71 (viltrox) ☓ 2 (m4/3 crop factor) = 3.9, not 2. (35mm equivalent). Am I wrong? Someone help me!! Great video though.
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 4 жыл бұрын
Right. So the exposure would still be an F2 but the equivalent in depth of field between a full frame would be 3.9 like you said. As far as understand exposure values are the same between mft and ff at the same aperture... Don't quote me though!

Thank you for your review, but I'm a bit confused. At first I thought, since the speedbooster is made for EF lenses, not for EF-S lenses, using sigma 18-35 or 17-50 you reviewed may cause vignetting or even worse outer parts of the sensor may become just black. But, it seems to work so great. Is it because the speedbooster does not boost (or concentrate lights) so much? If there's a x0.5 speedbooster, will it cause the problem for EF-S lens?
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 5 жыл бұрын
So essentially, Canon owns the patent for the EF-S mount and only uses that for their native apsc lenses, as you know. Other manufacturers (like sigma) from what I understand, use the EF mount for their full frame AND apsc lenses because Canon is the only one who uses EFS. So even though the 18-35 and 17-50 are both apsc lenses, they have an EF mount. In regards to vignette, in video it doesn't have any vignetting on my G85 or GH4 with the .71 speedbooster at 17mm. If you switch to photo, you WILL see a vignette (very small corner blackness) because of the full sensor 4:3 aspect ratio in photo mode. The video 16:9 effectively cuts off any vignetting. I would imagine the .64 speedbooster would run into some video vignetting issues though. Let me know if that makes sense and if you have any questions!

The 17-50mm 2.8 is definitely better for video than the 18-35mm. The 18-35mm is sharper and great for photography but the image looks too clinical for video without using a filter. Plus the Image Stabilization on the 17-50mm is a plus for people with active lens mounts.
