The Foveon is a CMOS sensor, what you meant to say is that the quality of the Foveon sensor design is totally different to a Bayer sensor design.

yes it is but no CMOS sensor in any other camera shares the Foveon technology as used in the Sigma cameras.

I love the review. As a long time dp2 owner I can honestly say that this is my favorite camera, the image quality is in a class of it's own. I will get the Merrill when the price comes down.

Well the X2 is great in the IQ dept as well but this has the newest Foveon sensor and it's a GREAT sensor. Just slow as molasses in use.

I think sigma should open source their firmware. I think the community would be able to improve write speeds.

Great camera. The image quality is truly phenomenal. Definitely not for one who takes a thousand shots but keeps one. Really makes you think before you shoot therefore having more keepers. Best used for studio shoots, art, fashion but not for candid streets or sports. Again phenomenal like having a medium format. Both the Dp2 and Dp3. Not a point and shoot camera or for point and shoot photographers. Also my copy does not have the noise this reviewer has. Higher ISO's with some blue manipulation make for great black and whites shots.

Yes it is but it is not a typical CMOS sensor...you will not find a sensor like this in ANY other camera.

X100 at $1199 - X100 is a much more enjoyable camera to use but the IQ from the DP2M is superior in every way...up to ISO 400 :)

I had the DP1 some time ago, and I must say that the image quality was superb.. I sold it, bought an X100, which is also a bit on the slow side.. I think in the future I'll go for a snappier and faster Olympus :)

I'm going to get one as a second camera. It's small enough to bring along for those shots where it can excel (low ISO, non-action). The images I've seen from these cameras are simply mind-blowing: It captures texture and detail almost like a medium format camera! (ed: Plus, it's dropped in price)

for me all these sigma cameras have thre major problems 1) the design is terrible, those cameras look like toys 2) the time that takes for the camera to write an image. what photographer can wait 17 second for just one image? they have to use a faster bus 3) video full hd at least

It is really sad that your first argument is the design. I don't think it's extraordinary, however at least it's decent and elegant. As to who can wait 17 seconds... Depends on what you are doing. I have a Canon 7D and even when I am shooting sport I rarely use its 8fps burst mode. If you shoot with an analogue medium format camera without automatic film transport, you need at least 3-5 seconds until you are ready to shoot again, maybe even more. So yeah 17 seconds is long, but then again I think it is not that bad. People should learn to calmly observe and wait for the "decisive moment" as Henri Cartier-Bresson said. He counts as one of the most famous reportage photographers of the 20th century, and he didn't have any burst modes or insanley fast film transportation. He still captured photos that others couldn't take even if they had 1000fps mode. I don't think Sigma is ready for Full HD yet, they should improve SPP and battery life. Sigma cameras are definitely a niche producht, because unlike other manufacturers, Sigma is labeled as a 3rd party brand. Show me a camera that comes close to the Image quality of the DP2M, at the same form factor. Don't forget that the DP2M right now is available for 450€. The camera has no gimmicks and a lot of flaws (especially SPP and the live view lag) but on the other hand you get a device that you can take everywhere and still seems to be on par with the newest FF DSLR's. I compared RAW's with 5D Mark III, 6D etc... I would dare to say that dhe DP2M has an edge over both. As for ISO, who the hell uses settings over 800 anyway, except when not being serious and not caring about it. I don't remember a wedding nor any other situation, that others claim to "be impossible without good ISO 3200 performance", where I needed more than ISO 800. Let me tell you one thing: If you are serious about picture quality, you won't cross the ISO 400 mark on any camera (Except the native ISO isn't 100, for example the RED has its native ISO at 800 I think, which means best SNR and dynamic range is achieved at ISO 800. but DSLR's native ISO is normally at 100.)
