I love how Barney conveys both concern for Lecter _and_ fear of him. I'm certain Frankie Faison read the book in prep for the role to get that "Me and Lecter are basically friends, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't kill me instantly if it meant an escape opportunity." Here, it seems like his expression is like, _"Damn,_ how much is Chilton pissing you off..?"

Hannibal respected Barney! The only way he’d ever hurt him was if it meant he could escape, but it never came to that. At the end of the book Hannibal sends Barney money for taking care of him all those years as a thank you. It’s an interesting relationship.

I don't think Hannibal is afraid to be alone with anyone. By this point in the movie, he has already internally vowed to eat/punish Chilton. He whispers Barney's name because he honestly likes Barney in the fact that Barney is never rude to him or tries to punish him like Chilton does. Barney also put out a chair for Clarice, something Hanibal considered "courteous" (again, his intense dislike for rudeness) Chilton here shows his ineptitude, low EQ and incredible capacity for pyshological games himself. He actually enjoys tormenting Hannibal and should therefore never have been anywhere near in charge of a psyche hospital.

I have watched this movie so many times, but only now I see that Hannibal is not ready to go see the Senator Martin by the time Chilton goes to his cell to tease him. That structure holding Hannibal's face (and squeezing his nose) is different from the one he's wearing when he meets the Senator. Also, Chilton leaves the cell and tells Barney to get him ready to go. So it kinda answers how Hannibal got the pen (a question that always got me): 1) After Chilton forgets it in the cell, Barney doesn't see it when he is getting Hannibal ready to go and, in a moment of oversight from Barney, Lecter grabs it. OR 2) Barney gives the pen to Hannibal. So, getting the pen was not that impossible after all 😛

I don't think Barney would give that pen to Hannibal. He wouldn't help him escape to kill more people, he is only nice to Hannibal because he has a good heart, that's why Lecter likes him. Daniel Guimarães Daniel, lector didn’t regard Chilton as anyone to fear, he enjoyed learning more about his prey. How do you suppose Lector had anticipated Chiltons flight to the Virgin Islands? no doubt just one of many things he learned from Chilton as Chilton tormented Lector as trapped forever in that cell, while Chilton probably bragged about a time share here or there. Lector knew the limitations that Chilton had on his actions, he knew just how much this dog would bite, and he had Chiltons number long ago. A petty functionary psychiatrist promoted beyond his abilities for whatever reason, whose only dream is to somehow one day agrandise himself, potentially by means of Lector himself. Chilton didn’t have the courage for physical violence so Lector certainly didn’t have anything to worry about. There was no plea from Lector for Barney, only “Bye”.

@DanDhaniels 4 жыл бұрын
@@donnajeanchristensen4671 I agree with almost every point of yours, except that I never said Lecter feared Chilton, I think Lecter only whispered to Barney when he was going to be left alone with Chilton because Lecter didn't particularly enjoy the man's presence. It's not fear I'm talking about, it's abhorrence.
@stickygumshoes
@stickygumshoes 4 жыл бұрын
Daniel Guimarães Lector enjoyed most opportunities to bring distress or shame to Dr Chilton, recall that Lector embarrassed him professionally before the psychiatric community, this is covered in the book. I think for Lector any encounter with a hated enemy provides “opportunities” for amusement and vengeance that would elevate any encounter with his tormentor as anything but a mere annoyance. Everything Chilton did to get back at Lector was certainly an annoyance. But the presence of Chilton in his cell would be anything but that. I only wish they had filmed a scene where Chilton learned of Lector’s bloody escape, as dawning horror and rising panic would replace Chilton’s smug self satisfied facade. Since Chilton enabled the deaths of so many individuals in the film and Book, I really wanted to see his reaction. Not his gruesome murder, just his reaction to the news of Lector’s departure. And that reaction would mirror his unique and personal understanding of what awaited him in the not too distant future. That being said, I rather felt sorry for Dr. Chilton, he is clearly a victim of the Peter Principle, a man promoted to a position beyond his abilities. I was also sorry too that the sequel was so terrible, in this franchise, only silence is worth watching. Brian Cox performance in Red Dragon though is excellent despite the rest of the film. And I won’t even credit the series Hannibal, it’s just a show full of grist for budding sadists.

I love the fact that because of this scene, Hannibal's inevitable escape after his transfer to Memphis is ultimately 100% Chilton's fault, due to his arrogance and incomptence in leaving a pen in Lecter's cell. If it weren't for the fact it's implied that Lecter kills and consumes Chilton after following him to the Bahamas, I think this would warrant Chilton getting fired for ultimately causing the release of a dangerous and notorious serial killer and cannibal, assuming Chilton wouldn't try to cover the situation or seek a scapegoat.

Nah Dr Lecter was already planning his revenge on Dr Chilton long before this happened. Chilton had tried and failed for years to get Lecter talking with him so when it didn't work he resorted to petty punishments and basically pissing Lecter off whenever he could like confiscating his books or making him watch trash TV. Imagine years of that stuff everyday it would drive anyone crazy but Lecter didn't break not once. He's planned killing Chilton for years it was probably how he got through it all because of that. Chilton was an incredibly stupid man I'm surprised he managed to work his way to the top because any half decent psychiatrist or psychologist would be cautious around a personality like Dr Lecter's and they'd definitely not atagonise him like Chilton did which just goes to show that he shouldn't be in that kind of job in the first place

Hannibal did not use the entire pen to escape from his handcuffs, rather he used the pocket clip attached to the pen. . . Dr. Chilton later reaches for his pen to sign Hannibal's transfer, as it should be fastened to his front shirt pocket, but it's not there. I don't believe Dr. Chilton is careless or stupid enough to allow Hannibal to steal the entire pen (Barney either), but I do believe that in the excitement and ruckus of Hannibal's transfer, Dr. Chilton wouldn't notice the pocket clip missing on the pen, and I'm guessing that's exactly what Hannibal was banking on. Instead of stealing the entire pen, I believe it is more likely that Hannibal had the pocket clip hidden in his mouth or throat already, and that the pen fell from Dr. Chilton's pocket later because it wasn't fastened to his shirt. One thing is for sure, he must have had access to that pen while he was unrestrained, and in some form privacy, even if only for a minute.
@donnajeanchristensen4671
@donnajeanchristensen4671 4 жыл бұрын
paul holman interesting idea, but when people clip a pen to their shirt/pocket, they do so KNOWING that it catches. Which it wouldn’t do without the clip. So no, we’re just meant to know that he’s missing his pen. Your point is a good one though. But when you clip something to a pen you’re aware you’re doing it and see that it clips. Your idea suggests that Lector got the clip and left the pen, but had Lector left the pen to be recovered, it is nearly certain the clip would be missed. I believe he took the entire pen and managed to hide/dispose of the rest. I think the book suggests as much. The scene where chilton is looking for his pen just lets the audience know that lector got what he wanted. And chilton is so blinded by the attention he’s getting that he doesn’t question the grave implications of having misplaced his pen in Lector’s presence. If Chilton had remembered, or suspected, he could have saved so many lives by having Lector restrained and searched for any potential portion of his missing pen. Also, Barney should have gone with Lector, he was the only one trusted to not make mistakes with Lector, another mistake by Chilton. I recently heard of a theory, it’s called the Peter Principle which posits that some people are promoted beyond their abilities, and while they can function fairly well most of the time in a lofty position, there’s that critical moment on the road of their career where the wheels come off due to a grave misjudgment and disaster ensues. Chilton is a perfect picture of this happening.
@paulholman9063

@@donnajeanchristensen4671 I think Chilton gets too much hate. Pompous, and arrogant yes, but I believe he should get some credit for intentionally getting under Hannibal's skin, and so for that reason I have to disagree with you and say Chilton was a qualified professional for treating Hannibal( I don't think he should be blamed because Hannibal is a gifted escape artist). My point of argument is this, that in all the excitement and movement for undergoing Hannibal's transfer and Chilton's prospects of national exposure, it would be much more believable that Chilton wouldn't notice the missing clip, rather than him not missing the entire pen in Hannibal's presence (Barney too). They've both been tending to Hannibal for years, and both knew the risk in making mistakes around him, so I find it much more believable that they wouldn't notice the missing pocket clip, as opposed to missing the entire pen in his presence. Chilton goes for his pen as if it was in his pocket the whole time after this scene, (maybe it was and maybe it wasn't), but if Chilton had the pen in his pocket after this scene, and it didn't have the clip anymore, I assume it could have easily fallen out somewhere along the way. I've never read the book, but I'll check it out, my comment is an assumption based on what I saw in the movie and I thank you for reading it, and commenting back.

paul holman sure, I get your point. It’s something to ponder. Though I do believe Chilton was far too distracted, and in fairness to Chilton, time was of the essence. Time was running out for the Senators daughter. The book is a good read. The book is none too kind to Chilton though and Thomas Harris seems to populate his stories with “useful idiots” vain and self serving to the point of creating problems for others. And Dr. Chilton is early on identified as such and he certainly did make a mess of everything. In the book a lot of personal contempt and immediate dislike is heaped on Chilton from The moment Starling meets him. So it’s pretty clear the author wrote the character in such a way as to suggest he was a rather seedy and unappealing person. The way Harris wrote the character of Dr. Chilton he was more a Hospital administrator than an actual psychiatrist. And Lector took pains to embarrass Chilton early in their association. Just Lector’s way of letting Chilton know how little he regarded Dr. Chiltons intellect and he embarrassed Dr. Chilton in front of his peers, or those with whom he wanted peerage. So Chilton NEVER forgave him. Chiltons bigger mistake was needling and punishing Lector whenever he wanted to show authority. In a major way, Dr. Chilton exhibited a dearth of imagination, as he failed to consider what could happen if Lector escaped and how it could impact him. I do think Dr. Chilton was a capable administrator, but he wasn’t clever enough to set his ego aside and just do his job without trying to torture and abuse Lector when he felt he wasn’t getting due respect. He should have considered what Lector was, and left him alone. If Dr. Chilton had merely preformed his job, much like Barney, would Lector have come after him. What do you think? Perhaps not.

@@stickygumshoes I can't comment on the character of Chilton from the book because I haven't read it, but based on the all the movies he's in featuring Hannibal, I'd have to say that the conflict between Hannibal and Chilton was authoritative. Barney was passive towards Hannibal because he feared/respected his intellect as an obvious genius, and I think it's also safe to assume that Barney enjoyed his calm and polite demeanor, and to some degree he liked Hannibal. Chilton couldn't be passive at all with Hannibal, because he was the administrator of that institution, and because of the position of authority he was in, Chilton wouldn't/couldn't be afraid, dominated by Hannibal psychologically, or charmed by his personality. If Chilton was more like Barney, I think Hannibal would've escaped years earlier, but even still I have to believe they would've had a struggle over power one way or another over the years, and as a result, yes, I believe Hannibal would still go after Chilton. I believe it's important to always remember that Hannibal's abilities to reason aren't completely intact because he is a psychopath, and therefore dangerously unpredictable.

Lector has his old nemesis for dinner, lol, According to a recipe from his favorite book, the joy of cooking, and a good Chianti. You know Hannibal Lecter knows how to cook, and Chilton needs to be eaten because he is a free range rude. Bon Appétit !

Anyone else curious about how Hannibal managed to steal Chilton's pen? I mean he was in a straitjacket while secured to some kind of hand truck with his head immobile. How did he get a hold of it especially in the few seconds he was alone before the guards came in to wheel him out to bring him to meet the senator.

My favorite scene, and a great 'director's trick.' You KNOW Lecter is going to get that pen. It's just the way it is. It's funny when you think about HOW would he ever get that pen - in spite of being in a straightjacket, strapped to a heavy-duty dolly, and a steel mask also locked to the dolly (no mere mortal could even move an inch) - but he does get THAT pen, because he's LEGEND.

Actually, according to another comment, the implication was that Chilton was so blinded by his ambition and excitement at Hannibal's seeming cooperation that he LEFT IT THERE. Just left it. So when Hannibal was released into his cell (well out of the restraints anyway) he just walks over and grabs it. While I would argue surely Barney or whoever came to release him would see it sitting clearly on the towel, I do like the implication that it was Chilton's own screw up that led to Hannibal escaping

It is Hannibal's intent - but in the novel he doesn't eat Chilton, only sends a threatening letter to him. I think this fits your theory better -- the higher mind has a destructive intent toward the base desires which torment them.

After Hannibal says his conditions, Chilton (aggravated) has Barney get Hannibal ready. Judging by his soft voice and appreciation, it can be easily assumed Barney removed the restraints. One overlook and Hannibal grabbed the pen.
@schizophrenic1231

Psychology, chilton is bragging about putting in conditions into the deal. Hannibal agrees to work with Chilton but says he has a few conditions of his own, Chilton unconsciously leaves the pen behind for Hannibal to write out his conditions. Hannibal easily manipulates Barney and the others because he always uses their name, whereas Chilton doesn't so isn't respected at all. It's mentioned more in the book about how Hannibal develops a rapport with the guards over Chilton's instructions to help setup his escape. It bugged me a while working out how he got Chilton to leave the pen but I watched the scene a few times, it was mentioning the conditions that did it.

Chilton went into business for himself by trying to take credit for solely solving the case. He put that girl and everyone else in danger, he got police killed from being a selfish prick Not only did this POS doctor break the law by secretly taping a fbi interview but he tried to steal the credit for Clarice's work. He deserved what he got in the end. I wonder if he went on vacation out of the country because he was running from the law. Shame we didn't get to see him begging for his life.

To me this scene always reminded me of Jack getting out of the kitchen vault in the shinning. Seriously how does he get that pen? In the book he's been collecting paper clips and staples and hiding them in his mouth, but here despite being restrained and guarded he gets the pen. It's almost supernatural.
@theozlander4629
@theozlander4629 Жыл бұрын
Um it's answered in the shining - the ghosts let him out. It's the only iron-clad confirmation in the film that the overlook IS haunted as there was no possible way for him to get out without help. As for Hannibal - another person commented that the only logical explanation is that Chilton in his hubris and excitement forgot the pen. The scene ends with him strolling out saying "Barney get him ready" and he's in a different outfit when he meets the senator - so he would've got it somehow in the ensuing swap. It wouldn't be that hard - Barney seemed to respect Hannibal and all it'd take is "thanks Barney, can you give me five minutes to stretch and relieve myself before you strap me into the transport one? Cheers" and boom grab pen
