If you pay attention, messing with proportions of facial features such as the scale of nose, jaws, distance between eyes is how they make models less attractive compared to a real person models were based on. I actually feel sorry for the artists because they were told to make them like that.

There is another artistic misdirection that people, at least on subconscious level, will notice. James is an exhausted, anxious, sexually frustrated, guilt split individual. Angela is under major depression, on the verge or suicide, even delusional to an extent. Maria carries a shadow of James' wife, that is also a deeply traumatized individual. They are not like that "since yesterday", their suffering and trauma lasted for years and years. This leaves a mark on your face, on your expressions, on how your eyes look, the totality of your facial features and micro expressions, even at rest when you are not talking. This was very well conveyed in original SH2 textures, look at shadows and eyelids of Maria's face texture, very similar for Angela. Instead of making the game richer in that sense due to new technology, they placed basic models with a default face expression (except for James that kind of looks a bit tired, mostly because the real actor also looks like that). That is why they look like a Sims character.

To think we will get this instead of kojima silent hills is depressing. This remake makes silent hill feels like some unknown resident evil clone when in reality it was his biggest competitor and had a very unique style. The shooting in the knee of monsters shows me they dont get the horror of silent hill, which is about surreal/psychological stuff, in contrast with resident evil more grounded in biology enemies. Manequins should just try to regain balance with some unnatural moves, nurses should try to at least simmulate a real woman being shot making you question if these enemies were really monsters or people or anything disturbing like that. For god sake, silent hill 1 original version had small enemies make children noises while stabbing you... Everything about this remake just makes me sad

I feel that's been an issue Silent hill has had starting with Homecoming. Silent Hill to Silent Hill: The Room seem to have this gritty stylistic look to them. The grunginess, pure unnatural darkness, and just overall makes you feel both suffocated and openly vulnerable at the same time. Homecoming onward just doesn't seem to strike the same feelings or even remotely close. Their styles felt more, I don't know what to call it, generic realistic horror?

the big problem with the models is that they stand out so much while being around fog. In the old version, the fog was actively in front of the model and it looked more natural. In this version, it looks more like an in-game model being used without fog at all. They don't fit in.

The complaint about Angela's appearance is not that she needs to be sexy, but that every single Western developer who employs DEI consultants ends up with EVERY female character being made less attractive/less feminine/fatter, etc. It's not a 60/40 split, it's more like a 99/1 split toward deliberate ugliness. That visual change is the easiest marker to recognize they've been given power over the final product, and it's dumb to assume that power didn't extend to the writing and story. When James watches Pyramid Head from the closet, he's going to be surprised that Pyramid Head is asking for consent.

Honestly I wished they didn't go with the new camera angle. Not every game has to be a third person over the shoulder style game with QTEs and icons for nearby items. It kind of just makes it feel more generic like alot of other games. The radio mechanic was designed with tank controls and a fixed camera in a dark space in mind and now it seems unnecessary. You didn't need it in RE2 or RE4 remake so why would you need it here? If Bloober actually thinks that a fixed camera is better they should add some optional mode where you can turn on fixed camera angles and tank controls while not making it the default way to play.

We should not need to turn off half of the game to make it "tolerable". This is why I will forever defend the classic RE and SH games and their use of SMART cinematic camera-angles: the devs could effortlessly direct the player's focus towards points of interest, and also CULL details away from their point of view, as they saw fit, crafting a truly impressive looking, memorable and atmospheric adventures we've not gotten since.

I never payed any attention to Angela’s appearance she was always an interesting character because of how incredibly unhinged she was right off the bat. It’s practically immediately noticeable in the original that “hey there’s something really off about this lady”. Also when she gives you the knife is such an iconic scene to me. She tells you to take it then freaks out like you’re the one holding a knife to her! So id say my concern is from even just the small amounts we’ve seen the Maria and Angela characters aren’t convincing. For once Mayo you might have more hope than I do.

I cant believe horror survival games have been stagnant and not evolved, and Im angry! When I first played Metal Gear Solid 3 back then, I always imagined a survival horror with a injury system where injuries would limits the character movement and actions; after Resident Evil Outbreak, a stat system, where characters would have different stats, one of them "dexterity" which would influence things like guns aiming, meaning a "civilian class" type like James would have a bad gun aiming, a "gun trained" character would have better aiming and a "gun expert" would have the "perfect videogames aiming" most games have. A Horror survival Dark Souls.

The most interesting thing the remake has to offer in my opinion, is the implementation of a more advanced interactivity system for pyramid head. I recall reading somewhere that the original intent was to have him relentlessly attack James in spontaous encounters throughout Silent Hill, so to see bloober hopefully fully implement that system would be great, however I'm worried Eddie is going to be changed alot as he's the only character who's remained unshown, hell the abstract Daddy boss fight was shown off before Eddie.

A some issues I have with the remake so far: The justification for button prompts on items is a bit redundant, as it takes you away from the experience by reminding you you're playing a video game, and James is shown in the gameplay trailer to adjust his gaze towards grabbable objects. While the adults have melodramatic voices, even before their troubles are clearly revealed, having Laura with an exaggeratedly sullen voice avoids the fact that until late in the game, she's free of sin and/or a justification to commit sin. Although she's shown to dislike James for his surliness towards Mary, she's also shown to warm up to James over their bonds with Mary in the diner: which is betrayed in *that* scene, making her internalize an active hatred towards James and makes her lash out at him. Since I've rambled on about voice acting enough, I'll keep this last bit short. The voices of the adults are clearly the VA's "acting" the characters instead of becoming them, removing a lot of their believability The environments are really impressive, and they capture Silent Hill quite well, the models don't quite have the same fidelity. They seem to have some shine; they look a bit like plastic dolls, particularly in the hair. I almost feel like they were ripped out of Silent Hill Ascension.

By the thumbnail and title, I was expecting your take to be much more negative -- but I was wrong, and your assessment of the "transmission" was a bullseye. Like you, I'm not really concerned with the changes to the character models' faces (I think Bloober has adapted the voice actors' faces into the new models, so if they look different it's not a huge deal though it would be nice to have them polish up the characters' appearances and maybe slightly slim down Angela's face so it's a tad closer to the original look), but similarly, I'm scratching my head about Maria's new outfit and I'm left wondering how Bloober is going to handle the sensitive subject matter of this game's narrative. To me, the visuals and sound design are pretty damn spot-on (except for the item pick-up sound, of course); the combat and exploration elements appear to be good; but if they crap the bed with the story/mythology/psychology of the original SH2 it's REALLY going to sink this remake. And I truly hope they add in a fixed-camera option for the game (like the fan-mod from RE2R). With the new movie, I'm expecting more of what we got the first time around: A really faithful visual adaptation, with a wonky, jacked-up story that sloppily mashes together a bunch of disparate pieces of several titles in the series and manages to miss most of the important aspects of all of them.
