The Silicon Valley Bank just collapsed.
Silicon Valley Bank ($SIVB) was the 18th largest bank in the U.S. They did business with 50% of all US VC-backed startups while their deposits tripled from 2019-2021.
SVB was named one of America’s Best Banks by Forbes just 3 days before everything exploded.
In a nutshell, they had a massive influx of deposits, which they had to invest. However, SVB didn’t have the capacity to make loans at the same rate as the deposit inflow.
SVB decided to purchase more than $80 BILLION worth of mortgage-backed securities. 97% of those had a 10+ year duration with a weighted average yield of only 1.56%.

I'm really worried about the current bank crisis. If a bank as big as SVB could fail, I fear for a lot more. I know a friend who is running a high-growth startup, and was badly hit by the bank run. I have pulled out more than $340k from my bank. After all, the FDIC covers only up to$250,000, and the implosion could have bad effect. Looking to invest into the stock market now. Does anyone know how I could go about it?

We underestimate the fact that banks are corporate entities also governed by greed. Since 2020, the banks have been over-leveraging their assets, which was one of the reasons for SVB's implosion. I have never been okay with keeping much money in the bank. I simply invest through my financial advisor, collect my profits, which I then spend.

Facts👍, of course I knew the fed was gonna backpedal and bail these depositors out same with SVB. Don't see nobody complaining on how the fed gave free money away bailing these rich people out of there own mess. It was a Sophie’s choice. Not bailing out would have caused a panic domino effect and a national bank run. It is cheaper than the money put into the US military, whose budget is a bloated money pit. Halving the military spending would still have the most powerful force on the planet, but reduce the debt and have money for public and social infrastructure
