In an interview the director Eggers mentioned Possession (same director as Silver Globe) as one of the films that changed his life, so I'd say its highly likely he watched this and the vibes you mention are intentional or unintentional homage. I actually tweeted about it in July but didn't make the connection again when I first read your comment :)
