I’m not a big fan of long and tedious, warm-ups, but there is one exercise that I include every time for all of my clients.
The T-plank is a simple, no equipment, exercise that improves the stability in your hips, shoulders, and core. It also can be a good warm-up for the spine and help to engage the muscles in the back in preparation for all upper body and core training.

Oh, man, what an irony. While I generaly like the T-plank and have been using it for quite a while, I did something wrong with it a couple of months ago and reinjured my old shoulder injury. Still healing from it, but I recently started doing the T-plank again, being very careful with the alignment and muscle tension. I will take to heart the tips given here for sure. Thanks, Matt.

A helpful cue is probably to not shift the weight of your body to the side until you can turn but rather pulling your body around the fulcrum of the shoulder of your supporting arm using your upper back muscles (extending the other arm upward mirrors that muscle activation, so this is almost a bilateral movement). I. e. the rotation is supposed to be the result of a concentric contraction of your back muscles (including the eccentric contraction as you return to the starting position). With this in mind, it might even be possible to build some muscle in the upper back with this exercise.
