I have been using grass clippings in my gardens for years now. It started out of necessity. I just didn't have the money to buy anything else but it has worked so well that I continue using it. I put it on thick the first year and it got hard and moldy so I learned quickly less is better and have had no problems since.

I think that your mention of a half-inch maximum is absolutely key to using grass clippings as mulch. Any more and they can mat up and reduce water penetration. Once they've dried out, as you say it's ok to add more. Great 2 minute tip 👍

You are so right!! I always use my grass clippings. It's the best way to keep the garden moist and add nutrients too. In the fall I mulch the leaves and cover the garden, this also helps keep weeds away and protects the soil during harsh weather. In the master gardener class I took the instructor said just 2" of organic material on the garden can replace the nutrients used in that season. Also if you do have your lawn treated wait for two cuttings before using on your vegetable garden.

Where I live here in Southeast Texas, the grass cut from the lawnmower (in a non-mulching or side discharge setup) is nearly dried by the time I make the next pass. When I am done cutting, I go over the yard again and blow all of the clippings against my fence on one side of the yard (this is easy with a riding mower). It stacks up against the fence where I let it dry for a couple of days. Then I come by with a rake and an empty trashcan and fill the trashcan. Seems to work well.

Grass clippings are the best, and it is so good at retaining water that you will rarely have to water your veggies, or in my case just once per season. My small tip is to leave some space between the veggies and the clippings, just a couple of inches so it doesn't touch the plant, sometimes veggies can get burned or diseased if it is in direct contact with the mulch. Wood is also good for mulching but, if your growing seasonal vegies you want those nutrients as fast as possible and that's why grass is so good, it breaks down in a matter of days. Excellent video

This is a really great idea and I’m excited to try this. I’ve actually never mulched in my vegetable garden before, but I know that there are a lot of benefits to it. One question I had was how does this affect your ability to know when to water? I typically base watering off the color of the soil, but I guess you can just stick your finger in the soil to see if it needs watered or not?

You should definitely try grass clippings as mulch for the garden. My garden is doing amazing this summer along with our drip irrigation. I recently started a gardening channel in 2023 using raised beds. Lastly, I would also recommend using leaves incase you don’t have any grass. Or you can look for a local arborist that can drop off wood chips locally (quality will vary since they trim various types of trees).

I have a whole bunch of huge grass plants around the house. I leave them throughout the winter as they provide seed for the birds when there's snow on the ground. In spring I use the chainsaw and chop them down just above their base. Chuck them in the yard and mulch it all up with my zeroturn. Then I rake it to a new spot so all the remaining seed is left behind where I chopped it up. I then go back over it with the tractor for a final mulching and bagging to use for a nice light fluffy dry brown seed-free mulch. Works really good if you've got some small young seedlings, no fear of damaging them. I get almost a full cubic yard from all my grass plants

I been doing this for years, never knew about that putting it on thicker makes it cook off faster. I have always put it on thinner under my plants and real heavy in the rows and walk areas. I have noticed the heavy areas do break down quicker but I always believed that was from a combination of the sun exposure and being walked on, and the thinner material under the plants was being shaded and was always decent. Weeds get out of hand fast in my garden one of the reasons I go so heavy. Just planted the garden yesterday, this year I will try being more conservative with it and see how it works for me.

Since you aren't putting a lot down the grass dries quickly. You aren't putting it down as composted. Just a mulch barrier. You want it to dry and brown. I’m assuming that grass clippings that are a few days old are fine? I’m trying it this year with ones that are already turning brown but won’t go for a thick layer-just a half inch as you said.

How do you use grass clippings (or can you) when you have drip hose around your garden plants?
@noneyun9943
@noneyun9943 3 жыл бұрын
You won’t need the drip hose! I’ve been mulching around my plants for a month now, and they barely need water. If you lift us the brown grass, you will see the soil stays moist for days. The more grass, the more moisture retention. I used straw and drip hose last year, and I couldn’t give the garden enough water.
