You’re probably familiar with the major scale and the minor scale. Today I’m introducing you to two more scales that can greatly improve your pitch.
First up: the whole tone scale. Rather than including both half steps and whole steps, like both the major & minor scales do, this scale is nothing but whole steps or tones! Working on this scale really makes you think. You can’t go on autopilot, because the whole tone scale doesn’t come naturally when you’re used to western music.
I know that can take some getting used to. For some extra practice, let’s try it starting on a different pitch. The pattern will be the same, just with different pitches.
We’ve got one more scale to learn: the chromatic scale. Be warned, it’s longer than the whole tone scale. Like the whole tone scale, this requires focus. It’s nothing but half steps or semitones all the way!
