I saw a tip from another potter on You Tube. I bought a very large plastic syringe on Amazon and you can get the water off the top of the settled clay water easily and discard it without disturbing the sludge underneath.

I seriously cannot thank you enough for making these videos. I started my pottery journey last year for a few months, and then I moved away. All I could think about was creating an at home studio, now, over a year later, it’s finally almost up and running! These videos are literally saving my life as a complete newbie potter.

This and your other videos about setting up water disposal and reclaim etc are very helpful and a little inspirational as it can seem like a big drawback not to have an industrial sink, but you make it clear that it’s not a problem and even just using buckets can be more convenient than a more bulky gravity system. Only things I would add is looking into using some rubber scraping device or squeegee to pull the clay from the bottom of the bucket or maybe even just a rubber kitchen spatula? Also it might be worth using syphon hose for draining or transferring water to spare your back.

I’ve got to get a few spare buckets. I’m using a system a lot like this one, which I viewed in the past & implemented in my pottery space. The clean water that I’m able to separate goes into a clean/washed kitty little jug. My daughter saves them for me. I keep four or five of them filled in my studio space because I don’t have running water in or near the shed. Usually I fill three of them from the outside faucet at the back of our house. Thankfully I know our yard well enough that even with my significant sight loss, I’m able to drive my little electric cart to & from the faucet so I don’t have to physically carry them. I have a separate cleaned kitty littler jug that is specifically used to pour off the clean water then when the jug is full, I take it over to my vegetable garden and/or the space where I’ve planted ornamentals. It’s most used in the ornamentals because I have a drip irrigation system run through my vegetable garden. Since I’m not glazing at present, I don’t need a glaze waste system. If were able to build the 12ft x 12ft (or 12ft x 14ft) pottery studio building, that’ll change.

I've been dumping the excess water like this, but adding the clay to my reclaim. Lol should I not be doing this? I love all the at home studio videos! They inspired me to setup a ceramics space in my apt

I use a trash can for a gravity system. I made a KZbin vid about it. I take the dried discs of sludge with clay/glaze and bisque them, then off to the dump. I also hate throwing waste recycled in my clay. ( Bits of sponge)So throwing jars to dry sludge out of waste clay for drying and bisque in the future.

Hello Mia thank you for always helping us ❤ but can you make a video about brushes and what we should look for that work with glaze should it be synthetic or nylon and the sizes also can you give me some tips about it right now thanks ☺️
@PotterytothePeople
@PotterytothePeople Жыл бұрын
haha sure! brushes are a matter of preference. In general for thin, detailed work, use stiffer brushes. Soft, fluffy brushes will pick up more paint/glaze so they are good to cover ground quickly. I personally don’t have a preference for nylon or animal hair. But I’m sure plenty of people do :)

We have a house and we have a basement. The garage is for storage and the other part is a gym and a laundry area. What do I do if I want to throw?
@PotterytothePeople
@PotterytothePeople Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure I can answer that for you! I guess you could convert either space into a throwing area. Just depends what you can do without. I have a video about setting up a wheel at home. Maybe check that out for inspo :)

I've been thinking if it is possible and how viable would be to make a "bucket" of plaster to help dry out the sludge and bin mostly solids. I think it is possible to make a bucket of plaster with two buckets of different sizes. Pour plaster in the bigger one and put the smaller inside with some weights or wood on the rim to keep it at a constant height and wait for the plaster to cure... I don't know, I've been quite sick and had time to think nonsense

You’re right! Plenty of potters do this already for their reclaim. More like a tray than a bucket though (dries faster!) I’ve also just left the bucket for a while in my studio and let it slowly dry out that way. This will require a third bucket though haha

Just bought a bucket yesterday at Home Depot, I should go get another (I do have 3 going already from throwing at home). Luckily at this point I'm with a community studio and don't have to deal with glaze water. I dump the "clean" water outside, (I suck it out with a huge syringe) I don't want that down the sink.
@PotterytothePeople
@PotterytothePeople Жыл бұрын
yes its better outside! 😌 I’ve been thinking about getting one of those syringes! 🤔

Maybe a stupid question but If it is just clay residue, is it not possible to put it in the garden?
@PotterytothePeople
@PotterytothePeople Жыл бұрын
Yes but keep in mind it will make your soil full of clay! I dump it in the garden but only the water on top.
