I personally don't know any indians that are like this yet you see us represented in this way all the time. Accents change according to where we live and the accents of people in our constant company My brother lives in the us and he developed an American accent in mere 3 years Another cousin of mine lives in the the middle East and he had that arab accent after a year This is another stereotype.... Even in big bang theory, raj still has an indian accent after living in California for over a decade....it's not like that people

People can keep there accent even after a decade of living somewhere. It depends on when someone moved to a different place. Kids/teens usually pick up accents faster. For adults it’s much harder. Then are people who force themselves to develop an accent to fit in and you and see right through it. There are brown people with all sorts of accents.

My accent changes according to the person Im talking to. Thats what international schooling and living in different countries does to you. lol But, my parents lived abroad for over 30 years and still have indian accents. So do all my cousins in the US, Europe, Australia and Gulf. I actually dont know any indians who lived in the gulf and got an arab accent. Its interesting your cousin has that accent. Raj has that accent to fit a stereotype. Kunal Nayyar himself said he doesnt know where the accent came from. He just started speaking like that for the show and it stuck. Honestly, can we even pinpoint an Indian accent accurately? We dont all speak the same language, how will the accent be the same?

Ha ha this accent thing can be a lot more complicated than you think - when it comes to India. I mean in a country with 19500 Mother tongues, 121 languages and 22 official languages trying to get the right accent for each indian character will be a nightmare. I mean a punjabi english accent is different from gujrati, bengali to Tamil, etc. Not to mention a more neutral accent from the city areas like Mumbai. and then we have Shashi tharoor : P As an Indian, i think most non indians can't differentiate between indian accents, but if you stay with one kind of indian and then listen to a different kind, i assure you it will be very different. Its like a regular Indian not finding a difference between Boston accent and Californian, or even American and British, Unless you have heard those accents many times in media. I mean how many times have we seen an American accent by a character who is playing a colonial British in Bollywood and found the difference. I have never heard the "Apu Accent" here in India. But i guess i haven't spoken to 1.3 billion people. Raj from TBBT comes petty close though, but he too hams it up, Kunal Nayyar (who plays raj) in his interviews sounds like a city boy with a good dose of American. I hope people can hear the difference between Apu and raj the 2 big stereo types on American media. When it comes to Indian accents in western media, i really don't mind who does it, Neither am i obnoxiously Woke. But then i don't live in America where i get teased or bullied for my accent, so i am not gonna judge Indian Americans who do. There is no one Indian accent, much like the British, Cockney, Gordie, Posh accent. What makes me an expert apart from being Indian? Well nothing really, its just an observation.

I love Apu, but I've got to say, Lily Singh would make for an excellent Manjula. That Manjula outfit is also pretty awesome. Good video that strikes a balance between the two sides. As an Indian-American, I'm quite impressed with how well the white guy writers wrote Apu overall (many of the episodes featuring him are hilarious and consist of intelligent jokes, not lazy stereotypes).
