In Romanian cinta "la dir de par" meaning playing with horse hair. Nicolae also does your ghost harmonics which they call cinta le caval meaning like flute. Caval is an end blown flute popular in romania and bulgaria.

I am currently searching for the propper string placement and exploring the harmonic values.

Just saw an amazing duet called "Hawk and a Hacksaw." They played a wide variety of Balkan and other ethnic music. The violinest was very skilled in this technique, and she made it both musical and fitting to the music.Super enjoyable!

Thanks, I'll check them out.

I like it so much! I will introduce it to my students, just to have some "different" fun on the violin. 🙂

I'm sure they will enjoy this!

You might get a less scratchy tone by moving the hair closer to the bridge.

Good idea- I'll try it!

This is a very interesting category of a fiddle lesson. I love it. do you know the Apache Indians in Arizona are known to have a Violin in their culture - made of a gourd. That would fit in this unusual category. Another superb presentation.

Glad you enjoyed this. Yes, I've heard of the Apache fiddle!

I first saw this trick performed in the movie, "Train of Life". Also featuring Taraf de Haidouks.
@mrtziganaramaАй бұрын
yes, there's a great YT clip "Gypsy vs Klezmer".

I think I saw that movie. Was there a train and whatever they call their version of hammered dulcimer? We used to make a similar thing using a plastic cup and dental floss. Our young students would love to play the 'clucking things' while we played cluck old hen. ♫
@TheFiddleChannelАй бұрын
That hammered instrument is the cymbalom.

@@TheFiddleChannel Right! I wasn't sure if it might be the hackbret. We used to sell a t -shirt with all the different names from other countries.
@aranosaranosАй бұрын
@StrumHollow hackbret or hackbrot is much the same instrument as the old style cymbalom (descendant of santoor from northen india). Hackbret is tuned differently. Popular in bivariate.
@aranosaranosАй бұрын
In Romanian its called tambal (With a dot under t making it sound like ts)

I found that you can double stop with this as well.

...or triple.... let the hair across as many stings as you like. Bass bow may give more breath .
@TheFiddleChannelАй бұрын
Interesting. I'll have to try that!

As a child I saw a fine virtuoso violinist do a similar trick in the South of France. Sorry don’t know his name. He also could play double stopped harmonics by tapping the strings with his LEFT hand if that is even possible.
@TheFiddleChannelАй бұрын
sounds amazing!

@@TheFiddleChannel It was. Almost seems like a dream now. I do remember going into a church for the concert which was scheduled pretty late. Maybe even 9pm. And also the French people spent about one hour chatting and hugging each other before the concert formally begun. So it was late in the evening. I think there was a double bass player as well, so wasn’t just solo violin. Yes it was AMAZING, and one of those concerts that inspired you as a child to play even more 😀

please do one for Check Yes or No by George Straits 😁😁😁😁

That's a good one! I'll add it to the list.

It must not be too widespread. I've never seen it. The trick where you loosen your bow hair and wrap it over the strings is more common.
@mrtziganaramaАй бұрын
Yes, I did a video on that one as well. Joe Venuti's trick.
