Very informative report. I was on a aircraft carrier during a storm. Waves were breaking over the flight deck. The ship was rolling and bouncing around. As one walked through the hangar bay you could see the structure expanding and extracting. It was hairy being out there with no control over the sea.

USS Ranger CVA 61. Sent from Gulf of Tonkin to the South China Sea during a monsoon right after North Korea shot down a Constellation, one of our spy planes. Our flight deck was 70 feet off the water and we were taking waves over the bow when the bow would dip down. Poor guys in the destroyer that always followed us. Talked to one of their crew members when we finally made it to port a month later. He said they were listing at 47 degrees in some of the waves. Scary!

I was on the USS Midway around 85/86 and we hit a storm in the China Sea that had me a bit worried. They shut the flight deck down as waves were breaking over the bow. I have been on 2 carriers and ridden out a few few storms but this one was massive. The front of the ship would rise out of the water and dive which doesn’t happen often in my experience on carriers. Scariest part of the storm is every now and then we would be hit broadside with waves that would shake the ship. I was glad to see calm seas for sure.

I had talked with a mariner who had sailed nearly every waterway in the world, and he said that he had never in his life seen waves like he experienced on the Great Lakes. He lamented that the reason is the rocky cliffs that surround many of the lakes reflect back the waves and ships sailing these areas will be forced to deal with rogue waves coming at you at three different angles twisting the hull and creating havoc. It is a horrifying experience to say the least, like being stirred in a soup pot.

Some years ago, I watch a documentary about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. They said when the ship hit the bottom of the lake, the bow plunged through the sand and struck bedrock. Hearing this I thought that such an impact should have been picked up by whatever seismographs are around the region and therefore it would be possible to pinpoint the exact moment of the sinking. I’ve always wondered if anyone has ever researched this information.

The damage to the bow along with the proximity of the broken stern and the iron ore debris field leads me to conclude, in my humble opinion, The Fitzgerald nosed down in a huge rogue wave and was driven to the lake bed where the force of impact split the ship, or she split before the bow hit bottom. She was 730 feet long and rests in 530 feet of water, so it is entirely plausible. With the ship's communications up front, that would explain the almost instantaneous loss of radio contact and radar contact with the Anderson's Captain Cooper saying "My gut feeling was I knew she was gone when I couldn't see her on the scope" as the Fitzgerald sailed into a snow squall. Just one of many theories. Tragic, no matter how you look at it. Rest In Peace.

I agree she drove down I don't think she split as 200 ft of her shattered. She hit mud then bedrock and her middle shattered. if she split her stern would have traveled. However only God knows and we can all debate. I'm glad people at least remember.

I agree and I never believe the hatch covers story,my teach when I was young made a wooden long skinny box filled with water and a freighter model added water and little fine pebble stonesto the model then was making waves the he made a handful of really big waves and the model when down bow hitting the bottom of the box and bumping the bottom and never recovered so if the box had a sand,clay and gravel bottom the ship would have dug in so I believe she hit bow first on the bottom and dug in and the 200+ft of the ship was in the air with the screw going and possibly the other two big waves pushed the 200+ft section forward snapping her in half and this would explain why the two halfs was so close to each other,imo.

@@insertnamehere313You’d be interested to know that later on in live concerts GL changed “at 7pm the main hatchway gave in” to “at 7pm it grew dark, he said then” because it upset him and the families that the very first cause they came to was the hatches weren’t closed properly (ie., it was the crews’ fault). While super high waves were hypothesized in the mid 60s, it wasn’t until 1995 that they had proof of rogue waves (cf. Draupner oil rig). Also, because “the hall” was a church, he changed “musty” to “rustic” because he thought “musty” was disrespectful.

@@GrumpyOldFart2 I've seen Gordon Lightfoot live probably 15 times or so. I wasn't debating anything in the song tho and don't take what Gordon says in his song as fact..but I do think the song help shed light on the Fitz sinking. They found indeed it wasn't the hatches later on. Hell even Captain Cooper said no way it was the hatches leaking and if it was..it wasn't enough to sink the the Fitz.
@GrumpyOldFart2

@@insertnamehere313 There’s two other factoids that I think are “cute”. Even though the Fitz was headed to Detroit, GL used Cleveland because it better rhymed in the stanza (I think. My memory is a little fuzzy on that). Plus, while during back and forth radio transmissions, the Fitz Captain did tell Andersen of a few minor mishaps on the freighter (they lost some vents, and a…small railing(?)), they never radioed that they were “in peril”. The last transmission was “We are holding our own”. Then, just 10 minutes later the Fitz was just ….gone. This makes me think that yes, some sudden, overwhelming catastrophic event happened. It’s silly, but it’s one of the reasons (among other ones) why I won’t go on cruises. Now scientists know that rogue waves are NOT uncommon in the open ocean. Can you imagine seeing a wave as tall as your ship coming at you? Dumb reason I know, but at least I’m not afraid of flying. 😂 PS….yes, I love the storytelling of the song, too. As one of the KZbinrs I watch says, sometimes telling the FACTS gets in the way of showing the TRUTH.

From looking at the map of Superior and taking into account the wind from the northwest, it looks like as the ship approached the safety of Whitefish Bay it was being subjected the the waves and wind with the longest fetch on the entire trip. Not a surprise then that there were rogue waves experienced by the Anderson and soon after by the Fitzgerald.

@@100Aces From what i heard they did that band-aid fix every few years. I doubt they had any plans to do a permanent fix as it might have not been doable for what the company would be willing to pay. They were just going to slap on another quick fix and move on. They also kept raising the amount the ship was approved to haul past what it was originally designed around. These things likely contributed to the ships sinking. None of this is on the crew but sadly they paid the price for the higher ups for straining the ship more than it should have been to increase their profit.

My opinion on her sinking is with Burney Cooper, Capt. of the Anderson at the time, that she bottomed out, the reason there are no marks on the stern section is because a stern wave picked up the stern so there are no marks on it.

@@100Aces Honestly, they might have been killed instantly, in some cases. 35 mph if you are braced against a bulkhead while riding out a storm could still at least knock a man unconscious. It would explain the lack of a distress call. I think it was sudden and catastrophic. The ship just disappeared completely. If those waves were that big, they had to have rolled up the deck, causing a severe list. The water stays up in the forward cabin and put the bow down underwater. Once it started down, the screw just drove the whole thing into the bottom, breaking the ship deep and causing the stern to roll almost completely over while simultaneously sinking.

@Cramblit 4 жыл бұрын
"Witch of November" is the storm front "Witch of November come early", which causes the "three sisters" or "wicked sisters" which are 3 waves perfectly spaced enough that a ship does not have the space to ride them. The ship generally if its a longer freighter like the Edmund was, will be forced to smash through the second wave, completely taking it over in water, and by the time it hits the 3rd wave, it''s still not had time to properly ride it. This causes in many cases the freighter to snap in half as the stresses from the buoyancy and 3 waves pull on each other. Add in 29,000 extra tons of cargo... You have a doom scenario. This is why the Edmund Fitzgerald is in two pieces, and why the lights, communications, and death of the sailors was so instant. It is strange to have nobody found, or even bodies. But if you consider everyone was most likely inside the front cabin, with the doors to outside sealed in a massively rough sea's, and your ship suddenly breaks completely in half and you have hundreds of tons of water surging up through the decks, with the ship sinking in a matter of a minute.. It's no surprise no bodies were found.

In fact they are basically unnamed non tropical storms! Hurricane force winds,and extremely high tides! Plus the ice and snow! If you look up wind speeds on top of mount Washington in nh! Speeds over 100 mph are common! The highest recorded was around 230 mph in the 1930's! And there are people up there all year round reporting the weather and doing experiments!

What happened was simple. The ship was taking on water from the huge waves. It was overloaded at that. Due to the waves and the up and down motion in the water, it put a strain on the ship and it broke apart at the surface and sank. Many think it broke apart after hitting the bottom, and if that were true the two halves of the ship would be much closer and the back half probably not be sitting upside down.

The cause of the sinking is probably not one single thing...it could be a combination of very large waves, the ship being slammed into the shoal by lifting waves up and down in shallow waters, or twisted by the waves, maybe the ship was overloaded with iron ore, and maybe the hatches on the covers were not closed properly,...I'm suggesting all of the above...

LIES ALL LIES That was done to put blame on the crew. Thus the owner of the ship and the manufacturer of the ship would not be held liable. In a nutshell the Fitzgerald should have never been in water until properly repaired. That would have taken one year in dry dock delaying it's launch, the owner wouldn't approve that to much money. Profit is more important than human lives in the corporate world.

It really is not a mystery as to what & why the Fitz sank...all you have to do is listen to Captain Bernie Cooper and, he will tell you what happened. (So will most all seamen from the Grt. Lks.) What is amazing is, how fast it went down.
