When a Germany U-Boat Sank a British Ocean Liner...
In this documentary, we are going to examine the events surrounding probably the most significant sinking of a ship by a U-boat during the entire conflict. It is an event that would have far reaching consequences for the war, and beyond which wouldn’t be fully realised until a generation later. This is the story of the sinking of the RMS Lusitania and how it lit the path to war for the United States of America. Welcome to Wars of the World.

In 1976 at the age of ten I had the opportunity of taking a brief cruise from Shannonbridge to Clonmacnoise on the river Shannon in Ireland onboard a converted lifeboat from the Lusitania. Its rounded hull contrasted sharply with the typically flat-sided river cruisers of the time. It was owned by an elderly American couple who had a personal connection with the liner. I reflected on the blend of terror and relief that the lifeboat's first occupants must have experienced.

You know, considering the myriad of problems World War I-era German U-Boats faced its astonishing that one SM U-20 actually managed to get lucky and torpedo the RMS Lusitania.

They sank over 5,000 ships in World War 1. So how is it astonishing that they hit an oceanliner?

What? No mention of the CSS Hunley? The first successful submarine attack.

As far as I know, CSS Hunley was not involved in the sinking of Lusitania.

@@dovetonsturdee7033 Never said it was. He started the story with a buildup of the history of submarine warfare starting with the first submarine attack which failed. He failed to mention the first successful submarine attack which was the Hunley's attack on the USS Housatonic which sank the vessel.

Yeah, they mentioned a successful attack, not the first attempt.

That's the "modern" situation after world wars. For centuries rules were respected during many conflicts. These rules were respected because it didn't cost much to do it, especially if the oponent did the same. Even during WW2 you could find "honor" in some part of the conflict. Example: Uboat surfacing after sinking an isolated ship to help the crew, even calling for ships to come to rescue them, and the british forces respected it by not attacking them during that time. It changed when US pilots unaware of this "agreement" (or just uncaring) began to attack the submarines while they were helping. Soon after the Uboats started to surface not to help the survivors, but to finish them and ensure no radio signal could get the attention of enemy planes. War is already a terrible thing, no need to make it worse. It's sad simple rules/agreements to save lives are more or less a thing of the past because some people think of their immediat interest and not much more (Churchill during WW1 by bending the rules to push the US into the conflict, soldiers breaking rules just for an additional victory...)
