About the only criticism I can give of the actions of the crew prior to the impact were the orders Murdoch gave to try and avoid the iceberg. For context, I was in the navy and was conning officer and officer of the deck for a ship similar in size to the Titanic (basically holding a similar position to Murdoch the night of the sinking) When I was learning how to maneuver ships, I was taught to never try to turn and stop at the same time like Murdoch did. The reason is that the water that is moved by the propellers provides the actual force on the rudders which causes the ship to turn. By trying to slow down, you reduce the amount of water pushing against the rudders and slow the rate of your turn. (And if you do start reversing it actually starts turning the ship in the opposite direction you want to go) This might be why Titanic wasn’t able to turn sharply enough to avoid the ice, and it’s given a little nod in the Cameron film when the sailors are confused as to why they’re not turning as quickly as they think they should be. However, from what I’m aware of, attempting to turn and slow down was standard procedure at the time, so I can’t really put any blame on Murdoch for that either.
@DutchDukeMan3 жыл бұрын
They did not slow down, they did not change the engine speed while going hard to starboard. only after the impact the engines were stopped, turned back on at half speed and finally stopped again. the movie got it wrong with the whole "full astern" theory

That would be an interesting case for Sam to do a deep dive into, as I only know the basic facts. Unfortunately, none of those heroic efforts were taken by the Captain, who took a lifeboat along with other crew members, in order to get to the rescue ship, leaving all the passengers to fend for themselves. I'm impressed that the crew of the rescue ship wouldn't allow them to board their ship, and told the Captain to return to the Yarmouth Castle. I think it's sad that the passengers didn't realize that the Titanic was hit by a iceberg instead of thinking that there was a shutter and there wasn't any danger to the point of refusing to board the life boats.
@25Erix3 жыл бұрын
Mind you, the ship didn't crash into the iceberg. It was a glancing blow and Titanic's sheer size helped dissipate and later deaden the impact shock. Depending on where you were on the ship, especially further back, you probably wouldn't have known an impact had happened at all. As for passengers refusing to leave? Look at it this way: huge ship, with top-of-the-line safety features and more lifeboats than was deemed necessary at the time. The entire ship was designed on the idea of being its own lifeboat, able to remain afloat in an accident (and Olympic had come through such an accident herself). You know it hit something BUT the danger isn't that apparent. Titanic had an excruciatingly slow death and it was a victim of a worst-case scenario no one ever considered. It's super cold out. Naturally, people weren't going to want to leave the ship.
@jesterchesterfield23743 жыл бұрын
@@25Erix true that. I think the circumstances had to be perfect for the ship to sink on its Maiden voyage. Think about it there was a 1/1000 chance that this ship would sink on its first voyage and it did. That’s what makes it so interesting is the fact that the greatest thing (at that time) ever created by man sunk in less than three hours on its first go around. The circumstances had to be perfect and unfortunately they were.

I like the euphoric greeting in every video, despite the historic situation was far from feeling like this. Just imagine Captain Smith entering the bridge shortly after the collision, turning to Mr Murdoch and saying "Hey everybody, what's going on?" ;-) Anyway, you do a great job in explaining all those interesting facts in such great detail. I have learned so much more about the Titanic which I hadn't heard before. The Cameron movie is great, but there is so much more to discover and explore. By the way (as a non-native speaker, who often has trouble in understanding English speaking actors in Hollywood movies): you're talking quite fast, but nevertheless most of it is clearly understandable to me, regarding acoustics and also the contents and reasonings in this complex matter.

Its amazing how long the Titanic was actually able to stay afloat after sustaining that much damage. It goes to show that overall the Titanic was a well designed and well built ship especially for its era. There have been lots of other ships, many of them bigger and equipped with modern safety features, that went down much quicker then Titanic. Think the Costa Concordia. I really think the ship and its crew have been given a really bad rap over the years though I can understand why. The crew of Titanic are true heroes given the circumstances they were in and how hopeless it was.
