New to the Sisters recently (no idea we did not know about them in the 80's), but MTV owes a great debt to a lot of bands who cranked out classic timeless videos like this. Possibly more than folks like MJ. At a minimum, it allowed MTV to make so much money they could afford to stop playing music, venture into other things, like reality shows of obnoxious people behaving ridiculously in front of the entire nation, until the execs went, huh, maybe we should start another channel to play videos.... lets call it..VH1.

Ladies, gentlemen, one thing must give you a hint in the video clip: "The Emperor is naked". This idiom comes from Hans Christian Andersen 's tale "The Emperor's new clothes" : The Emperor in the story was fooled by a guy who came to town and told him he'd make him the most beautiful suit of clothes ever. He had a loom on which he was supposedly weaving it and he'd point out all the glorious colors, etc. But there was nothing there. The Emperor didn't want to look like a fool, though, so he agreed and complimented the weaver's work and all his yes-men didn't want to look like fools next to the Emperor who obviously could see this so they agreed too. And when the Emperor finally put on his new suit and paraded through the streets, no one else wanted to look like a fool since the Emperor and all his dudes could see the clothes so they all acted like they could see them too. Until a child called out, "But the Emperor has no clothes!" And then everyone realized that it was a scam. What it means ? This is often used in political and social contexts for any obvious truth denied by the majority despite the evidence of their eyes, especially when proclaimed by the government. So yes it's a song dealing with the fact we prefer turning a blind eye to disturbing reality facts and believing in censored media and political lies because well... they know how to alienate us. Another idiom used is "The elephant in the room". I think Eldritch aimed at USA (he hates them), especially under Bush senior's presidence ("Vision Thing" was a term pronounced by Bush) but we recognized also Reagan, JFK, Ayatollah Khomeyni, Saddam Hussein or even Mouammar Kadhafi... In fact leaders who knew how to be image-conscious in order to control masses.
