I've experimented a lot with arm and elbow positions and in my experience having your elbow on or right next to the edge of the table is the way to go in CS. You get the best range of motion and consistency but you do need a BIG table. Moving your arm further back requires you to use your shoulder to keep your arm from falling and that bit of tension adds inconsistency. Your range of motion is also reduced. Keeping my arm/elbow on an armrest gave me even better and more stable aim but the range of motion was so small that I had to raise my sens and lose that advantage.

I bought your guide TAO CS way back when I first started scrimming in 1.6. Years later while I'm in the peak of my competitive phase my team played vs you in a pug with other CSS pros. Individual play style is a big factor for how different players sit. Like if I’m playing super aggressive with a sub against some tryhards in a competitive match on BO4, I’ll be sitting up straight to be ready for anybody I run into. Whereas if I was quickscoping, sitting back helps me maintain composure and not tense up because most of the time you need to hit nearly every shot on the first attempt or you’re dead. That’s just my experience though

I actually used the "side arm" sitting position when I started out PC gaming naturally without knowing anyone else did it. I simply did it because my desk was a bit to high so I needed to rest my whole arm on top otherwise my forearm would scrape the edge. Since my desk wasn't that deep I just angled everything which led to that style

The "style" of playing with your keyboard on your knees stems from Eastern Europe where desks with the sliding pad for keyboard were extremely popular among gamers' parents. Because in their mind the desk was not meant solely for the PC, but also for the paper stuff, like reading, writing, and doing homework. So the idea of being able to hide the keyboard underneath the desk seemed genius to them. I know a few people who became "victims" of this and even after growing up they are still used to having their keyboard on a lower level compared to a normal desk.
@JohnB-mo4kq2 жыл бұрын
I know this is a year old. I wouldn't necessarily say it stems from EU. Back 20 years ago, most desks even in NA had a slide out keyboard. To this day, I'm addicted to having my keyboard lower than the desk. I'm not sure how they can rest it on their lap though, it would feel too wobbly to me. If I ever switch to having my keyboard on my desk, I'll have to invest in a standing mechanical desk so I can have both arms comfortably on an equal level.
@VioletMiracle2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnB-mo4kq Well, I think in the West they started disappearing around mid 2000s, but in the Eastern Europe they are still using them today. Especially in libraries and stuff like that. And I still have friends who are using this kind of desk :)

@LargeTurn1p5 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I've always known it as Russian style among quake players, and have heard it attributed to Russian quake players playing in rooms for LAN with "not much space" which then, because some of them were quite good, inspired players of other countries to try it, which stuck for some of the ones that became especially successful.

Interesting video! Nice that you mention Quake players. Speaking of which, I couldn't find a picture anywhere but arguably the best HLDM player ever (Half-Life Deathmatch, which was extremely skill-based and competitive at the time), GaRpY, used to play with a mouse with his right hand but with his left hand he'd use a controller. I have no idea how he managed that but he got to a really high level in a game that requires very complex movement mechanics. He's still competing in the Quake Pro League under the Myztro organization but he's changed to a more standard set up a long time ago. He streams Quake and Apex Legends on Twitch if ever you want to ask him.

i have a posture like these quake guys, my friend does too. for my case its because i sat a table that was at a particular L shape that forced me to put my arm infront of the keyboard. for my friend, his usb cable was too short and so he eventually and permanently fixed into an internal rotation, which i think is the main reason because maybe these old box computers gave the same problem

Yeah I've been using Rapha's sitting position for a long time now, maybe in excess of 5 years and I have a minor disc herniation in my back and this position allows me to keep rested while I play for hours on end. The table height plays a major factor in this though, I need my table height fairly high... basically just below my shoulder if I had my hands under the desk. The downside to this is that if you want a low sens, you can't use a table sized mouse pad. So, that is why I don't go too much higher than 30cm\360 in this setup.

I think the talent/skill is mostly emotional stability. Whatever it takes for each individuals homogeneous background that allows them to sustain boundaries against pressure and just rather enjoy the game instead and learn from it at the same time. Maybe another way to say it is that it's an emotional response that if some people don't get it then they shouldn't feel hopeless and that maybe they should be doing something else and like taking care of certain responsibilities etc. That said, I'm not saying that if someone does have the ability to be cool, calm and collective that gaming is their calling and 'best & wisest' direction in life. Like Rapha could shine in something else which may be better for him than playing quake in an isolated room with more than likely a large (speculation) bunch of viewers living their life vicariously when watching him. There are heaps of characters out there with people who respond emotionally to things differently too so it may be that they need to find what drives their emotion and self efficacy to believe that what they do is making them a capable individual. Temperment, empathy, hatred, social acceptance are words amidst many that can be the agonist or antagonist in what they do. So if we talking about posture it may be a bit deeper than simply sitting in a certain way. When you embrace something willingly with desire, confidence etc you embrace it with your full focus and enthusiasm.
@ronrambokim4 жыл бұрын

I can't *_stand_* having my eyes so/too close/being too close to a monitor in general (I have perfect vision, feelings of immersion aren't/isn't really a problem for me anyway).. It's like a _weird_ claustrophobia feeling that I get. Even though I'm not claustrophobic. It's hard to describe exactly.. but besides the fact that my overall field of view is affected and I get uncomfortable from having a monitor *right* in front of my face.. It puts (more than wanted) strain on my eyes and obviously *the whole* _leaning thing_ that you mentioned in the video makes my neck and back hurt, etc. Besides that, I definitely have to try some of these out.. I use a typical posture, just neck and back straight, etc. Nothing special. I've gotten use to it.. which is good and the "form/style" I take is easily repeatable but it doesn't really reap any other benefits.. Great job on the video btw, thank youu for all the info/input/tips!!

Notice how all these pros hes mentioned have changed to conventional seating? Thats because those positions are unhealthy and can only work for so long before the pain is too much. Guarantee thats why.

the quake style looks like your left to right flicks would be insane but up and down movements look a little harder

Jdm plays in the same position we all do after everyone forces on the second round.

Entire forearm and elbows on the table is the best posture, since your arm weight is left to the table thus reduce strain on your shoulder. However, if your table is too low or your seat is too high, it will caused strain to the back and shoulder. In competition gaming events, it can be hard to get the right seat or table height due to the type of monitors and chairs. Personally, I tend to have the table height close to chest level so my entire forearm and elbow can rest on the table. Likewise, my back will always be straightened and not "bend" even when I subconsciously lean forward to the screen.
