Wow. As an eye care professional, graduating optometry school in a few short months, I am glad to hear that you have actually done your research. Yes, most of the discomfort that comes from staring at screens stems solely from how dry your eyes get. There is virtually zero affect on long term health risks to your eyes outside of dryness. Albiet, dry eye is one of the more prevalent eye conditions that plagues people with about 80% of the population falling to a diagnosis of Dry Eye, but only feeling the effects of dry eye when the symptoms and the condition are progressed to a severe state. The breaks that you talked about are what we like to call the 20-20-20 Rule. For every 20 minutes of screen time, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Practicing good visual hygiene as the academics call it is what can bring you that edge when it comes to your vision and not having it be a hinderance to performance. Other issues such as focusing and double vision should be reserved for visits to your eye care professional, such as an optometrist.

And as I was finishing the video, your comment about feeling "nearsighted now" is called accommodative spasm which can happen when you are doing near vision work for an extended and prolonged period of time. You can maybe circumvent this by wearing cheap over-the-counter reading glasses, but it will be trial and error, hit or miss.

Everything you said was super awesome and helpful and thank you SO MUCH for this info! I need to figure out how i can include this in a video some how as an update. I was really unsure with everything I was reading on IF long term health risks existed so I was ambiguous about it and am glad you could verify that!! Thank you again for viewing and the info!!

When i first started mg set up was with a walmart folding table and folding chair, i was about 3.5 feet from screen and a ton of leg room but no room to recline or push my chair back. I honestly think back fondly of those days a lot bc ergonomically im pretty set, but im 6’2” and miss the leg room. 😔

great video man 👍🏻 I actually had to see an eye doctor a month ago because i constantly had dry eyes and was just always tired all the time. He recommended to simply just sit 2 feet away and also some blue light blocking glasses and for someone who games about 6 hours a day i feel that i can actually go longer without having that dry burning feeling it gave me.

Before I started playing Valorant I also used to play with my monitor far from my eyes. But transitioned with my monitor around 5 inches close to my face, but with it I got into a habit of regularly resting my eyes, as I continued to get eye strain (even before I switched to this setup). A closer monitor just gave me a better sight on the pixels and more room for my arm and mousepad. (My posture for fps games is to have my whole arm resting in the table, and my table isn't that spacious, so I basically had my arm around the base of my monitor)

honestly bringing my monitor closer to my face actually improved my focus significantly but only a certain distance i could move my monitor closer, when i tried to bring even closer then before i did notice i was feeling not good, i had to look away from my monitor before the match started in valorant and my monitor brings off alot of heat and it really made me uncomfortable. so for me setting my monitor in a specific distance helps me pop off more

Honestly I thought this was self explained. Specially to those who have been gaming since they were young and would slowly get closer to the TV till their parents told them to sit back. I personally found out that sitting this close could also help your slouching habits as you're not wanting to lean more forward. Could be just me, but I figured I'd throw this in.

One thing I feel with your test is that your crosshair may have felt out of wack because it IS. I know it comes down to personal preference, but not having even a single pixel of reference of where the middle of your crosshair is may be less distracting and allow you to see pixels in really niche scenarios but I think being able to see EXACTLY where it is at all times is a huge benefit, it eliminates any human error of mistaking where center actually is.

I have myopia and its so bad that even if something is only a ruler away it becomes blurry. I once had to play without my glasses because they were being repaired and i had to sit close like this to my monitor compaired to how i usually sit far away (kinda like the guy you showed laying down on his chair) and during that i realised that i was able to make small adjustments better and notice things better which helped me alot because i use low res and also was using chamber at the time so which helped me hit 1 taps better and do 2x better than i used to. After that game i got my glasses and played another with it and how i usually sit and it ended up with my usual performance.

Ive been wearing glasses for 12 years and at some point tried out contact lenses, i'd like to say that if you wear contact lenses, your eyes will strain less and they will be more hydrated when playing, because the contact itself has to be hydrated, as for the glasses i have everything possible to protect the eye in the glass itself but it still gives me high headaches because i also play rhythm games,FPS games,MOBAs and MMOs. The one that obviously gives the most strain are the Rhythm and FPS games because you are required to put in all of your focus into them and blink less, i used to game in the dark but i started turning on a little light to balance out the light in the room and you should also open the window for more air obviously, i dont think that sitting close to your monitor will make you a better player, it literally all comes down to personal preference and what works for others the best.

1. Take a break atleast once a hour and focus on a long distance atleast 10m away from you. Do it for like a min or two every break. Helps your eyes to relax from close range focusing so you do not get "cramps" in your eyes. 2. Use moisturizing eyedrops 3. Have the right creen settings. Light, contrast, colours etc.. If your in a dark room, maybe you should block some blue light and use a warmer tone. Use rgb/a lamp behind your monitor. 4. Have a chat with an optician. a good idea is to have personalized glasses while playing

I have a hard time getting my eyes to focus after moving them quickly. They do focus, but very slowly. So for competitive games, I keep my monitor further away, so I have the majority of it in my vision at all times so I don't have to move my eyes as much. For single player games however, I do bring it closer so I can get more detail and help fill my field of vision so I can immerse myself better. For competitive games, I also have to have the surface my keyboard and mouse is on as level with my chairs armrest as possible.

For games like osu! I play more like 3:45 to be more comfortable but less exaggerated. For FPS, I sit slightly closer to the monitor. I also like to have everything else out of my prereferral vision or at least in an organized way. (Yes I used to have OCD but it's a lot more controllable now) I think this type of stuff also applies for mouse sensitivity. All preference.

So first off I have a crazy gaming chair, luxurious leather seating. Anyway, I used to have the exact same issue, feeling like pros use close monitor so I should but playing better with the monitor far. But every time I switched back eventually I wanted to go back to close more and although it feels more uncomfortable it became natural I could really be immersed and see things I could never before. So I got used to it, but now my hands are uncomfortable under my monitor but my gameplay has gotten so much better. Idk it screws with me now too like after screens I get nearsighted but if I move my monitor I can't help but look at the background of peripheral things from peripheral vision. Its like for me I got better after getting used to close monitor but overall affected comfort, but if I choose comfort I constantly hit this skill ceiling and lose the ability to frequently be hitting transient hypofrontality or (extreme focus where time dilates and slows) Edit: Like even now when using my 13' MacBook my screen feels far, when it is a good distance from my face. But after about an hour of use I get used to it and it feels like my monitor is close again. So odd Thats just my experience tho

So I am an Immortal player, so not pro or anything but I'm pretty good I'd say, and a tip I have for people who wanna try playing closer to your monitor is to use your monitor setting to artificially shrink your monitor so that you don't have to move your eyes as much, and personally that has helped me with the eye strain caused by moving my eyes so much and has helped with tunnel visioning.

Think that example at 2:00 is a really good example. If valorant didn't have red outlines and characters that person behind the box would have been much harder to spot.

Awesome vid. Didn't sugar coat it. It would have been cool to hear from a pro or two about why they do it...but you most likely didn't have the pull to get their attention. Thank you!

I've been actually playing like this since i even started playing fps games like csgo and its mostly because i have always watched streamers like s1mple and more pro csgo players and i really just wanted to try it out so when i first got my pc then i just started playing like this and now when i try to play normally i usually dont get as much kills coz i really focused when i am close to my monitor and helps me play and not miss a single pixel

I don't understand how people can play so close to the screen and not have their eyes burn, when you sit so close to your screen your eyes move more and it just hurts over time, sitting a little farther away so that everything is in your pereferal vision makes your eyes move less and strains your eyes less aswell.

in the example you gave csgo doesn't have an enemy highlight colour so it would be harder to see them in csgo if they are hiding behind some boxes

Great point! Still learning new things everyday about Valorant pros and meta, and that’s a super good point. In Val most pros use the color blind highlight to make it even more visible.

One thing i find myself doing when i am browsing my phone is only using one eye, because my screed is very small and i have to put my phone close but if i watch with both eyes they cross too much and it is uncomfortable (not always the same eye, it switches regulary) but i believe the eyes try to even the light between them and one of them is closed and the other staring at a bright screen and it is not good. Not very related to the video but it is about screens and eyes :P

I struggle to play with my monitor to close. Yes I see the advantage in terms of not missing pixels and making micro adjustments but I also see the disadvantage of not being able to check your minimap at a casual glance. I feel like at a healthy distance I have a perfect balance between keeping 1 eye on my gameplay and 1 eye on my minimap at any given time. If my monitor is to close I feel like I have to take to much of my vision off of the action to check the minimap 🤷‍♂️ anyone else get this?

Because the more you play without the special glasses the more blurry your eyes will be because of the blue light that the screen emits which causes your eyes to start getting confused and... blurry, and then go so close to their screens because they play too much all day
@mikeyjxy

It's because valorant is a game of pixels, who can adjust more precisely, the better the monitor and the closer you are the more you have a chance to see the pixels

the best wayy to fix your eyes is to either have a cool monitor than has a blue filter or use glasses that remove blue light trust me they are very good they have a tiny zoom so its like having it close to u

NGL I have seen the difference myself. My front-end headphone jack wasn't working so i had to sit very close to the monitor cause the headphone cable wasn't long enough. And I became more precise with my shots.
