Catalan here. The shitting log, called Tió, has to be fed for around a month (like leaving cookies and milk for Santa), then it gets beaten with sticks while singing in order to make it shit some presents. Not kidding. It's serious business around here.

Well, that's actually not true. "Tio" means uncle in Spanish, in Catalan it's "oncle". "Tió", with an accent, just refers to a piece of wood meant to be burned. But yeah, the traditon itself is quite unconventional 😂.

+nvrules27 The most reasonable explanation would be that someone wanted to literally take a shit on the christian religion by placing the Caganer everywhere so people would mistook it as a part of the religion and be disgusted by it. People thought it was standard to have one Caganer there, so it was spreading worldwide. So no one would convert himself to christianity or people from christianity would go away from the religion because there's a guy taking a shit right in the place where Jesus was born. But now when I think of it, the trime traveler is the most reasonable explanation.

@Jeroen_Mastenbroek9 жыл бұрын
I'm from the Netherlands. Zwarte piet isn't Christmas, it is sinterklaas (it is a holiday older than christmas and the people who created christmas used manny things from sinterklaas). There are some similarities but they are very different, sinterklaas is for a few weeks in holland delivering gifts and returns to Spain on 5th of december. Also sinterklaas is much more a culture thing than christmas it is soo old even parents of grandparents celebrated it. That makes for more tradition, than christmas. It is a shame people over the world look so critical to this tradition without knowing what they are talking about.

+Visigodo666 Oh and BTW the most accepted theory about the origin of the caganer is that shit is a good fertilizer for the land. And since Catalans are said to be tightfisted its something desirable. To have someone shiting your lands. About the shitting log. Its called "tió" and in order to make it shit presents you have to fake feed him for some weeks before christmas (orange peels, potatoes, onions...) and on christmas eve all the kids grab sticks to hit him while singing a song. Then you remove the blanket covering him (to protect the log from cold and dont see the presents) and pick the gifts.

As a Catalan I can confirm all of this. I had never thought that it could seem weird to foreign people until I had to explain it to a Scot... that was awkward.

Catalunya is part of Spain, it isn't a colony 1-It is literally geographically part of Spain 2- Spanish colonies a poor and enslaved 3- they don't exist anymore, I should know I live in one of those former colonies, Costa Rica... Also the separation of Spain and Catalunya will only economically destroy Catalunya, the whole separation thing was made by politicians to swing votes, AAANNNNDDDD in the Spanish constitution its illegal for parts of of Spain to leave Spain the last ones being probably the central American colonies

Nope, it still is. No one recognised its independence and Spain just went "No you don't" basically. It didn't even go out with a bang, apparently the government Catalonia set up just went "Oh, ok".

My families Christmas tradition is to pick out a tree that is still wrapped up so we don't get to see if it's a good tree or not until we get home. It's fun but we've gotten some pretty shitty trees before. This years one was one of the best ones yet. o

So back in 2010 I was in Barcelona around christmas time. I stumbled upon this 20 feet tall statue of a dude squatting and taking a dump, right in the middle of a shopping mall. It was just him though, and nobody else. It puzzled the hell out of me, but I just sort of dismissed it. Now I finally know what it was all about. Thank you, I'll go to bed slightly less dumb tonight, though only slightly.

I think the shitting log (we call it caga tió) deserves its own video too. We feed it with food leftovers for weeks and on christmas day we beat him with sticks and threaten it to keep beating him unless he shits out presents. Yeah, santa is not scatological enough for us :D
