Just to clarify, the ghost of the woman who was abused by her husband wasn't killed by her husband - she committed suicide by slitting her wrists to get away from his abuse. That's why she says "you can't hurt me anymore!" while showing her slit wrists.

Great reaction. and one small but signicant aspect about the ending that a lot of people still miss: Bruce wasn't lying when he said "you were never second." In fact, his condition proves that. He didn't pass on to rest eternal after helping another boy. He only passed on after telling his love that she was never second. She was his first priority to the point of being the primary cause for him sticking around. He couldn't move on until he told her that and reconciled that with her/himself. I think that enriches the final scene even more. good reaction as always with you guys. Ash, you need a tampon for that nose, at least for the heavy flow days.

The twist does reveal a few problems with the movie. In the opening, when Donnie Wahlberg shoots Malcolm, it's taking place around Christmastime and then, it cuts to the next fall. So you're telling me that it took him about a year to come to the realization that he's dead? A year of him wearing the same clothes, no one speaking to him and no one but Cole noticing his presence? He's got to be the densest guy ever!

You're right, Hayley Joel Osment's performance was absolutely amazing. He was nominated for an Oscar, but did not win. It's too bad he never became a big star. I'm surprised you didn't know about the surprise ending. I thought this was one of the most well known twists in movie history. The line "I see dead people" was also a well known, often referred to, movie quote for years after the movie's release. This movie was the sleeper hit of 1999. It wasn't on anybody's radar at the beginning of the summer, and it became a huge hit, then became the top video rental of all time. Yes, they weren't ghosts of people who'd died in that house, they were seeking out Cole because he had the gift of seeing them. He said about the little girl who was poisoned, "She came a long way to see me, didn't she?" when they were riding the bus to her house on the day of her funeral. Which makes me think, that was another clue that Malcolm was dead: why would he be riding a bus with Cole, instead of driving him in his own car?

It’s been said that indigo children (kids who can see and communicate with spirits) are like beacons for spirits. Spirits are attracted to these people because they are able to detect their presence. Mediums usually say they began to see spirits as children, allegedly. In other words, it was Cole that was haunted, not the house. Spirits would have found him no matter where he was.

My son and his friends had heard the phrase I see dead people but thought it was in regards to something else. Then in this they thought it was about the obvious ghosts like most of the audience until the big reveal at the time. Its like knowing cognitively about Hitchcock or the Twilight Zone twists exist but not having actually watched was for me and my parents.

I saw this movie when I was a child as soon as it came out on DVD when my family rented it from Blockbuster. After we watched it, I was super paranoid for weeks and struggled going to sleep thinking about every creak in the house being a potential ghost. No blood or gore or excessive jumpy scenes. Just a good old fashioned ghost story, immaculate storytelling, and a huge twist.

This movie was brilliant. There is a cut scene that might have given things away because you see Cole helping a non scary ghosts. Look up the cut scene. What i was surprised to find out, years after I saw the film, is that Cole knew Malcolm was a ghost the whole time. That’s why he ran into the Church when he saw him. There’s a vid on KZbin of Toni Collette talking about the making movie and another about the writer and director M. "People get shot in the head and survive." - FACTS!! That's exactly why the misdirection at the beginning of the movie worked so well. We see that type of transition in movies all the time, where the main character survives some type of early traumatic experience in the past, and then the film fast forwards to the present.

The house with the balloon is an old house from the 18th century Philadelphia. Many of these old houses have small attic doors. Whoever was in that small closet, was a servant, full of anger and rage. Malcolm also needed to resolve the issue with his other 10 year old patient who killed himself 10 years later in Malcolm's house. That boy also saw dead people, notably, the ghost who spoke to him in Spanish when Malcolm was rewinding the cassette player.
